Re: something something Chicago shootings

I find it interesting that even though there are new programs focused on this terrible problem in Chicago about 1/2 of the money dedicated to it have disappeared. What happened to it?? Typical Chicago!

1 of Chicago's bloodiest years ends with 762 homicides

#gunfreezone

CHICAGO (AP) -- One of the most violent years in Chicago history ended Sunday with a sobering tally: 762 homicides, the most in two decades in the city and more than New York and Los Angeles combined.

The nation's third largest city also saw 1,100 more shooting incidents than it did in 2015, according to statistics released by the Chicago Police Department. The numbers underline a story of bloodshed that has put Chicago at the center of a national dialogue about gun violence.

The data released Sunday are staggering, even for those who followed the steady news accounts of weekends ending with dozens of shootings and monthly death tolls that hadn't been seen in years. The increase in homicides compared to 2015, when 485 were reported, is the largest spike in 60 years.

Police and city officials have lamented the flood of illegal guns into the city, and the crime statistics appeared to support their claims: Police recovered 8,300 illegal guns in 2016, a 20 percent increase from the previous year.

The bulk of the deaths and shooting incidents, which jumped from 2,426 in 2015 to 3,550 last year, occurred in only five neighborhoods on the city's South and West sides, all poor and predominantly black areas where gangs are most active. Police said the shootings in those areas generally wasn't random, with more than 80 percent of the victims having previously been identified by police as more susceptible because of their gang ties or past arrests.

Re: 1 of Chicago's bloodiest years ends with 762 homicides

Went to Corian school in Chicago. Drove there from Missouri. I pulled in , I guess in a bad side of town and an older black gentleman approached me and advised me to gas up in another side of town. I assume it wasn't safe for a whitey from the Ozarks. .I thanked the man, took the expressway down the road awhile, checked in my hotel room and then got out and got supper and fuel in a better part of town. That was a nice guy to warn me. Chicago is a rough town.

Obviously making guns illegal isn't having the desired effect.

It probably is. The problem is that all anyone who want to own a gun who lives in Illinois has to do is trek across the state line to Missouri or Kentucky and buy arms in a state with few or no restrictions. Given the fact that Illinois still has one of the lower murder rates per capita in the US means that something is probably working. What isn't working is that the US does not have a universal standard when it comes to firearms, unlike Canada and most other nations.

Toronto is a little bit bigger than Chicago. The murder rate was way up this past year with a total of 69 homicides from all causes.

Toronto Homicide Victim List 2016 | Homicide Canada

The rate of shooting deaths was way up, too from a total of 26 all the way up to 40, It was a bad, atypical year for gun deaths.

What was Chicago's again?

Obviously making guns illegal isn't having the desired effect.

Hunh?

Obama was sure Emmanuel could help this city out. Instead the problem got worse. What will it take to help solve this situation?

The problem with that theory is that St. Louis should have an even higher murder rate since purchase is so easy there. I do agree that a national law would make life simpler. Use Texas as the baseline model.

Trump blasts Chicago mayor Rahm Emanuel for record-setting 762 homicides and 4,331 shooting victims in 2016 and says he 'must ask for Federal help' if he can't fix Windy City

  • One of the most violent years in Chicago history ended with a sobering tally: 762 homicides, the most in two decades in the city
  • 'Chicago murder rate is record setting – 4,331 shooting victims with 762 murders in 2016,' Donald Trump tweeted on Monday
  • 'If Mayor [Rahm Emanuel] can't do it he must ask for Federal help!'
  • Emanuel and Trump met December 7 in New York City but reportedly talked about illegal-immigrant 'dreamers,' not gun violence
  • The nation's third largest city also saw 1,100 more shooting incidents last year than it did in 2015
  • The increase in homicides compared to 2015, when 485 were reported, is the largest spike in 60 years

You can get them by the bucket load just across the town line.
Probably pretty easy to get them into Chicago after that. I hear the border guards are non existent at the town line.
What they need is more guns, to protect themselves. Right?

Well that is what happens when Democrats get full control of a city.

Use Canada as a baseline model.

OUr gun control laws suck. Big time. Only criminals are allowed to carry hand guns in Canada with immunity. If the Joe lunchbucket got caught with a hand gun he would be in jail and court until he was bankrupt.
