I fail to understand why some Canadians or Americans get excited about Hugo Chavez (oil donation aside) what has he done to generate such a wrath?

Is he building a nuke device that he has aimed at North America with desires to use, ie; North Korea?

Has he 'sold out' his people to work for 50 cents a day for the profits of Corporates, ie; Communist China?

No he 's not doing either of those two nor much else that negatively affects Canada or the USA so I don't get the fervent excitement about him from the no bodies............

Venezuela donates free heating oil to 100,000 needy US households

Last year, President Barack Obama and Congress reduced Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) funding by 25 percent, cutting off an estimated one million US households from desperately needed assistance just as winter's worst chill, accompanied by record heating oil prices, set in. Fortunately, the CITGO-Venezuela Heating Oil Program was able to assist an estimated 400,000 Americans last year.

"The federal fuel assistance program reaches only one-fifth of all the eligible households in the US," Kennedy said in Baltimore. "Millions of families just go cold at night in their own homes."

US Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), who was on hand at the Baltimore launch, expressed his gratitude to CITGO.

"The demand is greater and the resources are shorter," Cummings said to widespread "amens" from the packed house. "We must not turn our heads away from the working poor-- remember, we could be in the same position. The help you provide to families is bigger than just the oil. It's about helping children lead stable lives."

Indeed!

Canadians-especially those who work in the agricultural & exports sectors-should get down on their knees every night and Thank Comrade Chavez for wrecking the once mighty Venezuelan farming business-now that the competition is gone we sell a fortune's worth of food to Venezuela and are paid in hard currency not make believe bolivars (which have just been devalued again BTW).

Of course the Colombians make even more seeing as how they're next door but Hey there's lots to go around, eh?!

Want an example?

On the island of Tobago I bought Venezuelan Cheese for less than 10% of what it costs here-it was essentially donated by Comrade Chavez-Venezuelan producers weren't paid squat so he could pacify his friends next door-he is famous for that.

So what does a Venezuelan do when he wants Cheese?

He goes to the store and pays market price for Colombian product-ditto Eggs, or Milk or a dozen other things you can name.

What a great guy eh?!

Hugo Chavez fighting for his life, Venezuela's vice president says again - CBS News

...tick tick tick

This is one on the Kennedy Family's greatest scams. The real needy families get free oil and heating. The Kennedy program subsidizes people who who make too much money to be on public assistance. The Kennedy's give them free oil while raking in massive salaries. Genius!

And they got Hugo to fork over free oil for Americans that are so much better off than Venezuelans.

I suppose this thread could be a memorial...
Fair enough.

Under Hugo Chavez's leadership, his government rewrote Venezuela's constitution to increase protections for indigenous peoples and women, and establish the rights of the public to education, housing, healthcare, and food. The new constitution called for dramatic democratic reforms such as ability to recall politicians from office by popular referendum, increased requirements for government transparency, and numerous other requirements to increase localized, participatory democracy, in favor of centralized administration. It gave citizens the right to timely and impartial information, community access to media, and a right to participate in acts of civil disobedience.

Chavez's land reforms turned unused land into farmland for the poor and middle class.

He made oil companies pay fair royalties to the government, which raised capital for all his socialist activities, like building and modernizing schools, universities and hospitals.

But AI says he's an *******!

Your hypocrisy is showing.

President Hugo Chávez smiles with his daughters, Rosa Virginia, right, and María Gabriela, while recovering from cancer surgery in Havana, in this photograph released by Venezuela's government on Friday.

In three of the photos Mr. Chávez is holding a copy of what Mr. Arreaza said was Thursday’s edition of Granma, the Cuban newspaper....

You had such hope. lol

The Venezuelan Govt. strung its people along this whole time KNOWING he was dying. So didn't I. It just goes to show you who the gullible are that will believe any propaganda thrown their way as long as it says what they want.

Let this be a lesson to you EAO.

AI's report doesn't blame Chavez for anything. they just identify the Venezuela's problems. Mostly the same ones identified by Hugo Chavez.

Overall, the report indicates that Venezuela had room for improvement, but Chavez was moving Venezuela in the right direction, enshrining protections of human rights, freedom and justice into their constitution. Given more time, Chavez would have continued to improve the lives of Venezuelans.

I never claimed Chavez was healthy. I only claimed he wasn't dead.

Well now he is.
How about this claim...

Proves you're a liar.

I hope you learned your lesson.
Ummm...

How has Venezuela changed under Chavez:

Hugo Chavez was first elected president of Venezuela in 1998. He came to power vowing to use the country’s oil wealth to improve the lives of its poorest citizens. By some accounts, he is delivering. Living standards are improving in Venezuela.

But the president’s critics say Chavez is falling short of his own rhetoric. Given the country’s vast oil wealth, they claim Venezuela ought to be in much better shape.

One focus of the Chavez government is education. To improve computer literacy, the government is giving away nearly 2 million laptops to primary school students.

“We are preparing kids for the challenges of new technologies,” said Venezuela’s Education Minister Maryann Hanson. Free computers are part of a broader government campaign to make education more accessible. And it’s working. Enrollment at primary schools has jumped 50 percent over the past decade. University attendance has tripled.

In fact, government statistics on health, education and economic development point to a substantial, if not great, leap forward. All this comes after Venezuela registered one of the world’s worst economic declines between 1970 and 1998, the year Chavez was elected.

Under Chavez, unemployment and poverty have been cut by half. Infant mortality is falling. New clinics and hospitals are going up.
