Which they've been doing to Castro since 1959, and in all that time he's never come up with anything to equal Camp X-ray or Abu Grahib.

What would Cuba look like today if the US had allowed them to trade and not interfered politically?

They would be wealthier. Cuba has been denied access to the largest market in the world.

The Cuban Missile Crisis never would have occurred because we know from Soviet documents that Castro didn't want them there. He acceded to missiles only because he had to.

There would have been an opportunity for the international community to push for democratic reforms. That has been largely impossible because of the USA's constant support for restoring power to a few elites.

RE: Chavez ... Human Righ

Not irony at all, Jimmy. You confuse using wealth for an overall improvement in the human condition with generating wealth for the benefit of the the already wealthy.

Capitalism, especially of the kind espoused by the United States, is inherently anti-democratic and anti-human rights.

jimmoyer, the point is, that even had Castro wanted to move to a more capitalist, market-driven economy, the US blockade made it impossible.

Castro is no poster-boy for human rights , but given the attempted coups and assassinations against him, the well-funded and policially powerful Cuban lobby in Florida --most of whom are just those who profited from the terror and criminality of Batista's regime and their decendants who want an unearned piece of the pie)-- smearing him and pressuring the US to attack him in any way possible, I don't find it too amazing that he's co-opted some of the techniques of totalitarians, do you?

Really?

I've seen much damage done by the sure footed righteous among us. I've seen people overreact to correct one wrong and in so doing commit often a great wrong.

I predict Chavez is about to do just that.

........hmm. why do your predictions sound like "wishful thinking".???..........

(sorry to digress for the moment........but all of the riddling ...can be a tad

Well pastafarian, who was responsible for the US blockade? ... Cuba.

Castro has the gull to complain about the US embargo after he confiscated assets and property from US citizens without compensation? Not even an apology. He made his bed, now he sleeps in it. Did he not initially realize this would come and bite him in the butt?

Till he re-compensates for what he took, he's not getting any sympathy from me. Oh, and for those who say he can't re-compensate for what he took .. .sure he can ... just take it outta his hide ...

E-x-cuuuusee me. Typical reactionary moronic childish attitude.

Your government is responsible for it's actions. Not Castro.

Your government is responsible for the suffering caused by it's actions to the people of Cuba. Castro is not responsible for that.

Castro did not make your government put embargos up. They did that out of spite and hate. Don''t blame him for the sins of YOUR government.

Castro is no hero of human rights, but your government has only made things worse not better.

yep........and that is the repetative pattern of the good ol' u.s. of ........control freeeeeks.

actually what they do.... ( simple version) is impoverish a nation, weaken it ........and then invade it. ( get it ready for the kill and then grab it around the throat via military bombings and a bit of torture here and there.)

and they (neoconfascists) think we is not on to them...

Excuse me!

Please try to not write more idiocy than you can possibly help!

For what property did your country pay restitution to Britain after your revolution?

What kind of imbecile expects payment for property lost to one’s former vassals, after the people have fought — and many died — to rid themselves of their former tyrant?

The Cuban revolution was revolting against the Batista regime and the American interests (much mob-related) that propped up that dictator.

If your examples represent the kind of thinking that goes into American Foreign Policy, it is no wonder that you country has such a reprehensible international odour.

Yeah did your government ever pay for that tea that got dumped in the Boston habour?

I doubt it.

Hmm...Maybe the Brits should make you pay for that...with interest. A lot of interest.

would say that it is safe to presume that this kind of um.."thinking" ???? not only exists but is quite prevalent ....in their country. and that explains the rage (quiet and not so quiet ) at the u.s. today. People are on to them......have been on to them for some time.....and are getting mighty dissed off with them. "they" have used up their privileges and abused them... just as they have done with most things........and the fact that all this is now rotten to the core. (illegal, immoral , unethical etc )....the stench only grows.

Isn't this how one can view the situation in Iraq and from Iraq?? You INVADED. YOU LIED......You conned, manipulated, cheated and groused , you STOLE....you KILLED, maimed and tortured.....and you still expect if not demand that they appease YOUR fecking demands.

............Or don't you GET IT????

You want to be a world leader........then show some ethics, integrety , credibility ,honor , respect for the law and respect for HUMANITY. Otherwise.........you are nothing but a military loaded (testosterone) buffoon.===and not a very funny one.
