I'd still maintain that this company increased the number of dogs without having a plan in place for after the big influx of tourists fell away. That's the part I have a problem with.

Really bad business decision. Lack of foresight or wishful thinking, it doesn't matter. These dogs were a commodity just like pigs. They were not somebody's pet killed by another person they were disposed of by the owner. They were bred as work dogs for mushing just like chickens are bred to become KFC. In that perspective I cannot see jail time no matter how it pulls the heart strings of some people.

I concur. It was that single line that jumped out at me, for the very reason, that when far to many people think of animals, they tend to anthropomorphize them.

Oh come on.....you're making that one up ;-)

When you have dogs crawling away with half their faces blown off - as reported at the time - and panicking because the slaughter is happening right in front of them, the job was done without care, compassion and respect. That's the part I find disgusting.

Agreed, but I imagine PoliticalNick's response would be to bring up the fact that this happens in slaughterhouses every day. The only difference is its knives, hammers and scalding water instead of bullets.

We tend to consider some animals more important than others.

In any slaughterhouse I've been - including the killing floor on which I worked a summer job many moons ago - the blow, shot, spike was inflicted in an area separate from stock. Cattle panic too....

It's not about pulling at heart strings. It's about acceptable behaviour vs non-acceptable behaviour. You cannot deem certain behaviours to be unacceptable in society but then have no consequences for them.

You are missing the whole point, Nick, there is never any excuse for causing suffering to dogs and those who do should suffer consequences?

It may have been Mark Twain who said "You can pick up a starving dog and feed him and he will not bite you............there lies the difference between a dog and a man"!

Sounds very much like a token effort and not reaching out to the community at large-how many people know about 'mushing forums'-your post is the first reference I've ever heard of such a place ever.

How many people would have been reached even by an interview with old line media as opposed to some remote corner of cyber space?

The simple fact is that the company wanted the dogs gone ASAP-food costs money-and so they did as little as possible to keep them alive-with tragic consequences.

Wasn't a token effort as the dogs were listed for months; you can't force people to buy or even take dogs in. Do I think enough was done to find the dogs homes? Hard to say; I don't live in the area or close to it, but I think that a fair warning of "If I don't place these dogs, this will have to happen," would have helped things at least a little.

Just because it's the first time you've heard of it, doesn't mean squat. Have you looked for mushing information? Searched for mushing forums? Wanted to learn about mushing? It's linked on a lot of pro mushing kennel pages as one of the top sources online to and for mushing. It offers a kind of one stop place for anyone interested in the sport or the varying sports associated with sled dogs. It has links to mushing suppliers, lists for mentors, lists of kennels, sales of anything and everything to do with mushing, information area for newcomers, lists books and videos you can buy; it's all there. It's far from a "Remote corner of cyber space".

Easy enough to find if you use a little effort to find it.

That said, a lot of mushers were upset, and still are, over this whole ordeal. It puts strain on an already questionably imaged community due to people from PETA and others who think sledding is cruel. As much as I hope the people involved are duly punished, the damage this has done to the community as a whole will take longer to recover from.

I agree it is disgusting and that the guy was an incompetent moron but if we are going to jail people for being incompetent morons you need to wall in an entire province as the jail.

I don't give a rat's bald ass about mushing since I loathe snow with a passion.

I'm talking about making a concerned effort to find homes for animals-not jobs homes.

What part of homes don't you understand?

Besides the fact that your ignorance shows, maybe you should acquaint yourself with mushing and sled dogs, before you go talking out your ass.

The part where not all sled dogs can be house pets.

Because I don't like snow=who's talking out their ass?
No your ignorance = you talking out your ass.

1, Not all sled dogs can be made into house pets.
2, Not just anyone can provide the necessities a sled dog needs.
3, You're completely ignorant of what kind of requirements and energy is needed to give a sled dog a home.

As good a description of your posts, as any.
