A federal judge on Thursday approved the sale of the Crystal Cathedral to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange to help the financially struggling mega-church emerge from bankruptcy. The decision by U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Robert N. Kwan came after a bidding war between the diocese and Orange County's Chapman University for the 40-acre property in Garden Grove.
The diocese plans to use the site for a countywide cathedral, which means Crystal Cathedral congregates will need to move to a new location.

Chapman had wanted to use the site to expand its health sciences offerings and possibly start a medical school.

The board of directors of Crystal Cathedral Ministries announced earlier Thursday that the diocese was its preferred buyer for the church campus.

A board statement said it preferred terms of the diocese's $57.5 million bid for the Orange County cathedral, longtime home of the "Hour of Power" broadcast.

"The Catholic plan allows Crystal Cathedral ministry full and exclusive use of the Crystal Cathedral and the majority of the property for three years," it said.
In addition, the Family Life Center would be available for 18 months while temporary solutions are found to house programs for children and youth.

The Rev. Robert H. Schuller started the Crystal Cathedral as a drive-in church in the 1950s under the auspices of the Reformed Church in America. Decades later, the Southern California ministry evolved into an international televangelism empire and erected its now-famous building.

In 2008, the church's revenues plummeted amid a decline in donations and ticket sales for holiday pageants due to the recession, church officials said. But some experts say the church failed to attract younger members while alienating older churchgoers with an ill-fated attempt to turn the church over to Schuller's son, ending in a bitter and public family feud.

The church laid off employees and cut salaries, but its debts surpassed $43 million, prompting the Crystal Cathedral to declare bankruptcy last year.

Some congregates at the Crystal Cathedral said losing their church would be a sign of failure of the ministry's leadership and they wouldn't follow its leaders to a new site.

Actually, it was a very active church for many years, and was no "con-game". They did a lot of good in Orange County for over 50 years.

But then again, Bar Sinister sees almost anything that he can't understand (meaning anything that is religious) as a "con-game".

Really? Did you check out the church's website? I know a religious con when I see one and it seems to me that the money spent on raising that ridiculous religious edifice known as the Crystal Cathedral would certainly have gone a long way to helping the community if that is actually what was done with most of the money. Of course, there is no way of telling how the money has been spent (other than the obvious exorbitant spending on the Crystal Cathdral) as Robert Schuller, the founder of the church and his family have steadfastly refused to open their books to public scrutiny. I don't doubt for a minute though that if you were to visit the Schullers at home you would find them living in great luxury, especially given the fact that members of Schuller's family were frequently rewarded with six digit salaries.

As for understanding religion I would put up my historical understanding of religion against your beliefs any time.

Just for your edification here is a link describing Schuller's church as a ponzi scheme.

The story that you're not hearing in the mainstream is the fact that Robert Schuller has become a heretic, and now his world has come crashing in on him.

He has strayed from biblical doctrine, and now preaches that it is harmful to even mention sin and hell. False prophets have found that mentioning sin and hell are bad for business, and they can attract more followers if they preach a UNIVERSAL message. You start telling people that everyone's going to be saved and there will be no hell, and you better believe people will fall for it!

He is also one of many false prophets who are now supporting Chrislam, by promoting the similarities between Christianity and Islam in a project called "The Common Word".

He's a heretic, which is confirmation of 1 Timothy 4:1 "The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons."

Thank God the Catholics have come to rescue to keep the cathedral in the family!

Not the same thing. Some folks call the RCC the "universal church" because in its earlier days it was dominate and "everywhere". But they don't preach UNIVERSALISM, a belief that everyone is going to heaven (all paths lead to God).
There is no path to god necessary as we are all part of god. The doctrine of separation of man from god is a false one. There is nothing that is not god. There is no separation.

That is because religion is a con game. Even a lot of Born Againers recognize religion as a con game, even though they still believe in the fairy tales.

There is nothing that is not god.

Death
Sickness
Poverty
Injustice
Pedophilia
Accident proneness
Ignorance
Hate
Rebellion
Covetousness
Godlessness
Genocide
Fear

If "there is nothing that is not God" that would include this list plus more.

Plus, how can Godlessness be part of God?

That is because religion is a con game. Even a lot of Born Again recognize religion as a con game, even though they still believe in the fairy tales.

The bible has NOTHING good to say about religion. The people Jesus came into conflict with were the RELIGIOUS leaders.

"Religion is man reaching out to God. Christianity is God reaching out to man."

God created evil. Says so right in the bible. What we call evil is the result of separation and duality - both human concepts, not god's.
