British films are the best in the world because their makers know how to do humour, honesty and understand history better than anyone, Carey Mulligan has said.

Mulligan, the actress, said there is an “amazing wealth of talent” in Britain, citing “incredible actors and incredible directors” that put home-grown films ahead.

She added the country’s “huge history” left a wealth of stories to be told, making British films “just better”.

Mulligan stars in new British film "Suffragette", which was released on 12th October.

Carey Mulligan says British films are the best, thanks to our understanding of comedy, a long history and 'real, honest drama'

The actress, who is currently starring in Suffragette, said she had been fortunate to work with “great” actors from her first steps on set in 2005’s Pride and Prejudice, before going to break America in films such as The Great Gatsby.

Mulligan was interview by 16-year-old Catherine Hampton for Into Film, an educational film festival for young people also supported by the likes of Eddie Redmayne, Michael Sheen and Sir Ian McKellen.

When asked about the best thing about British film, and making films in the UK, the actress said: “They’re just better!

“There’s just an amazing wealth of talent in Britain. There’s incredible actors and incredible directors and cinematographers and art directors and costume designers.

“We’ve got a huge history here so there’s so many stories to tell and we’ve got a really amazing multicultural society and so that has so many stories.

“I think we’re really good at comedy and really good at real, honest drama as well.”

She also spoke about the new things she had learned for her films, disclosing she had once received “really bad concussion” after falling from a horse.

“I did learn to horse ride for Far from the Madding Crowd which was great until I fell off quite badly, two weeks into filming and had really bad concussion for about six weeks,” she told an audience of young people.

“But I actually loved it, not the falling off-concussion bit, but I did love it, it was great.”

Her latest film, Suffragette, was filmed at the Houses of Parliament and tells the story of women’s battle for the vote.

Into Film, a film education charity, is supported by the BFI and Lottery funded. Its festival, aimed at five to 19-year-olds, is the biggest of its kind in the world and runs from November 4 – 20.

No, they're better because they're Briddish.

I know it's hard for you, what with all them Pakistani children scaring you and all, but try to stay on track.

If there was a film of pakistani kids laughing at you and making fun I'd have to agree.

Outside of that there is a reason why most Briddish films SUCK.

The Brits do produce the finest actors. Canadian actors are often so stilted in their movie and TV character portrayals.

Yeah, those Canadian actors are just blocks of wood. Michael J. Fox, Leslie Nielsen, Gordon Pinsent. Not a one of 'em could act worth a damn.

I prefer any countrys films over the USAs crap. British films are better, French are better still and German are also excellent, Austrailans make fine movies as well. The thing about yankee movies is that no matter the subject you've already seen the esential film, the same scripts have been reworked over and over since talkies began. Can't stand thier bullsh it.

Two of those three made their hay in the states. Pinsent is one of the most stilted. Becse or stage /movie/TV is so heavily subsidized by the gubmint we get gubmint TV even on the private stations an networks. Our really good actors head to the UK or the US to get away from the overbearing CRTC. England has a longer tradition of acting and, even though it is highly subsidized, it has a freer rein.

Meh. I don't care who thinks who is better at movies. I just like movies from wherever actors from wherever. Some Brit movies are great, some American ones are great, some Chinese movies are great, some Italian movies are great, etc. Lately we watched a couple Aussie ones that were pretty cool.
I agree though, Canadian movies and actors just can't cut it. I mean Donald and Kiefer are totally ridiculous, Evangeline Lilly in LOTR was deplorable, and Leslie Neilson funny? You are dreaming, right?
And you just have to love Brit movies. Like Ali G in Da House, Outlaw, Honest, Revolver, Lesbian Vampire Killers, Spice World, Sex Lives of the Potato Men, Rancid Aluminum, etc. were all just top-notch.

I've yet to see anyone top "attack of the killer tomato's" or "Shlock". And Michael Landons performance in "I was a teenage Werewolf " Was one of the greatest achievements in film history.
