If you consider that cancer and heart disease have been the leading causes of death in the Western World for about the last eighty years why is this even surprising?

It is and it isn't. Until recently heart disease was way out in front, but I guess because heart disease has been quite prevalent for people in their 50s and 60s, but with more awareness and treatment for things like high blood pressure and high cholesterol, people who previously would have died at a younger age are now living long enough to contract cancer in old age. However cancer does tend to be tolerated better by older people. It was on the T.V. in the past day or so how being overweight increases the chance of getting cancer and we know there is now an obesity epidemic. Lots of variables come into play.

To some odds mean squat. Aside from 3 non cancer deaths in my family on both sides, cancer(Luekemia) has been the 1# killer in my families history(both sides).... Im not suprised at all by #1 cause of death in '08 was cancer....

Families have a propensity for different diseases it seems, whether genetic or lifestyle who knows? This friggin A.L.S. seems to run on the paternal side of my family, one disease nobody needs. Other than eating barb wire and roofing nails for breakfast I don't know what else to do.

Think of it like Russian roulette. Your family history determines how many bullets in the revolver. The environment is the trigger.

For me, it's diabetes on my mom's side, and kidney disease from my dad's family.
