When my wife and I moved to the US from Canada (she's american) we did all of our paperwork and processing via the US consulates within Canada (initial application in Calgary, all follow-up via Montreal, including a final in-person interview). We started the process in April and the final interview was initially scheduled for August of the same year; my updated Visa, allowing me to enter the US as a permanent resident, was issued within the week, and I received my physical green card within the month.

Whatever you do, do not "just move" and hope to sort it out after you arrive. Do a lot of research before you move and get all your paperwork sorted in advance; assuming there aren't any oddities in your particular case, there shouldn't be a need to hire a lawyer.

I found the information and forums on VisaJourney.com to be particularly useful in pointing me in the right direction and clarifying a lot of the government-provided information.

I am a Canadian Citizen and I have been dating an American man for 2 years now. I would like to move to Seattle where he lives, so we can start our life together. I have researched the different visa's and possible ways we could do this. We considered the fiance visa, but we don't want to just get married to get us out there (I have a 7 yr old daughter also) and its almost forcing us to get married because you have to do it within 90 days or you have to leave the US and cannot reapply for another 6mths!! So I was going to try and apply for jobs from here and hope that they will help me get a worker's visa, OR can I apply for one anyway without having a job lined up there? I have had people tell me, that if I just go down there and stay, I can apply for a permanent resident status. But my issue is, I have my furniture, a car, clothes that I need and want to bring with me there, so obviously I can't go that route because the border will be questioning me about all my stuff! SO, how can I move to the U.S. by summer 2009, with my stuff and able to work? Any suggestions or advice will be greatly appreciated, let me stress that....greatly appreciated!!!!! ;-)

I have a friend who wants just the opposite. She has met a man she wants to marry but he is an American. He would like to move to Canada. He is concerned that because he has suffered two heart attacks, he will not be accepted into this country.
Neither of them seems to know what to do or where to start. Anyone?

I know I shouldn't say this because it may not be so now since I made my own move south...

Moving on the west coast from north to south was extremely easy and both Consulates (Canadian and American) were more than helpful - that is their job.

Never hesitate to be in touch with them especially now that we have internet connections - do as much of the initial getting started before the appointments are set in Canada or the U.S.

Makes me so proud the two nations are like cousins in so many ways and I hope this never changes.

Depending upon where you friend's fiancee is located - he needs to be in touch with a Canadian Consulate - there are big ones in L.A. and SFO and possibly Seattle now - the information is on the internet and he can query directly or go through an American Consulate to begin with - asking his medical status question of either.

Re: Canadian moving the United States

You will either need the title to the vehicle, or notarized permission from the lienholder (Bank or finance company that the money is owed to)to move that vehicle to the USA,

Re: Canadian moving the United States

I wrote this last year and I figured I would write an update. My boyfriend who lives in Seattle and I decided we want to get married and are going to get the Fiance visa...now my problem is how can I ship my car from Canada to the U.S.? What will customs need? My daughter and I are going to fly out there and ship my car and what little belongings I'm bringing. I have tried to look online, but nothing is really giving me the information I am looking for? I am hoping someone on here may know and possibly what companies to contact to get estimates on how much it will cost to ship a vehicle. I will also try and call the port of entry and hopefull an officer can give me some answers. Thank you!

I was wondering if we could be in touch since I am a Canadian in the same situation you were (wanting to get married to an American and move) and am very nervous about the best way to do things. I'd like to have someone who went through the same and can guide me through it… :)

I'm an American and my girlfriend of 6 years is from Canada. She finally wants to move to the U.S. to be with me... What is her best and fastest option? She works at an american based company in Canada so she would do the work transfer... Also she is currently doing a pardon... Can anyone help on this subject?

You'd better not look South Asian or Arabic.

That's the legal version of a shotgun marriage.

Her having a criminal record is going to be a problem.
