Canadians ask of their military: Who are you? What do you do? | CBC News

Recent research (commissioned by the Canadian military)reveals that the average Canadian has very little awareness of what the Canadian military is or what it does.

As this aligns nicely with my own experience I have little trouble accepting and understanding it.

The Canadian military is an enigma. This country has no use or need for an offensive military force, and uses its military simply to fulfill amorphous political obligations to a range of allies who have their own goals.

Unless and until we arrive at a definition of our own there will never be a clear understanding of what this organisation is of what it is supposed to do.

You are claiming the average Canadian is as stupid as you. I highly doubt that although you do bring the average way down.

Personally, I don't like this.

I've always believed we should spend more on our military.

We should also be making our own stuff like ships, aircraft, land craft.

No, I don't think we should go ballz to the wall like the US in spending, but come on, we should be spending more than we do.

... and on the Eastern ocean coast, another ship of our unknown Navy, HMCS Ville de Quebec sailed for the Baltic this Wednesday to support our deployed battle group in Latvia. On board is a brand new CH-148 Cyclone helicopter on it's first overseas deployment. It is for this brief moment in history, the most modern, advanced naval helicopter in the world and it is being sent there for it's advanced sensor capabilities. It will provide a sort of pockets AWACS for our forces.

Our frigates are constantly deployed somewhere on the globe. They have particularly long ranges of action and the happily sail all over the globe unescorted. We have ships deployed at sea pretty much continuously and there are five others excercising around Hawaii and San Diego right this moment, just in case you thought that our Navy is somehow idle.

As I mentioned - our military has nothing to do with national defense and everything to do with fulfilling vague political promises to various allies.

Sadly our own waters remain almost completely undefended and unpatrolled while we fulfill these ridiculous foreign obligations.

Sadly, you are assuming that our coastline is undefended. Who said that, besides you? By the way, the newest class of ship being built for the Navy, right now is specifically designed to patrol all three if our coasts, including the Arctic and it will be unlikely that they will ever be sent to Africa, the Middle East, the Pacific Rim, etc. They are just not meant to be used that way. Ice breaking hulls and machinery make no sense sailing the Mediterranean.

22 years in Maritime Patrol gives me something more than an assumption.

I was stationed on both costs as well as the US and Italy, and I know pretty much exactly what assets we have and what we do with them.

Is that so. "Maritime Patrol" is pretty general...what military or enforcement commission?

Hard to believe that any service or commission would have a position for such a buffoon as yourself. Even harder to believe that someone serving their country could be so disrespectful toward the entity that they serve or served as you claim to have.
