Okay, from and enviro standpoint, what's better? Building an entirely new pond with no biological cleaning capabilities established in it, or using a lake which already has a microclimate? No matter where you put these tailings, they're destroying an eco system. Nowhere on earth (short of deep well disposal), lacks an ecosystem which is impacted by the presence of this stuff. But it seems to me that at least an existing lake (I know, it sounds horrible to say) has biofilters in place that might survive an onslaught like this and eventually neutralize it.

This is untreated effluent. Nickel oxide is a known carcinogen - the stuff they had so much trouble with in Port Colborne. There wasn't even any mention of lime slurry to neutralize any acid or of measures to prevent the spring freshet from washing this stuff downstream.

You've got a good point karrie. Just remember, no fishing there or anywhere in the downstream estuaries for as long as it takes to dissipate the heavy metals. Oh ya, don't drink it either.

Makes you think that to save our ecosystem, we may have to pay more or do without. Hell what do we need all this crap for anyway?

My question is why the hell do they get to dispose of their garbage cheaply (rather than paying for proper disposal for a substance they created and profited from)

At the expense of other property owners they impact.

If I have a BBQ restraunt, I can't just take my garbage and dump it in my neighbours lawn and say "look, my expenses are cut!"

Backwater, Ontario.
Spaked like a true Con. environmentalist, so it is.

Just as long as they don't throw any dead conservatives in the river upstream from me, I could care less. That garbage would have a half life of probably many thousand years.

:angry3:.......disgusting idea.
