I thought by posting that clip, CapsuleNeo - which was so over the top with the fog machines, and so forth - I was showing it was much more than blue light. If it makes you feel any better, I didn't know who Zakk Wylde was and I just thought, "Gee, that guy in the band is getting a really nice solo." I'm sure it went over a lot of people's heads - even if the judges or Ryan (not sure who) mentioned it later.
You compare a famous musician to the fog  . And for all those people who don't know who Zakk Wilde is, the guy is a big star in the rock industry because he worked with Ozzy Osbourne for years. He was a trending topic so people at large know who he is. I don't remember that the fog was trending on twitter after Adam performed Mad World. I said that If they need backup singers and guitarists they should be in the background. When half the performance is about a famous musician, I feel like it crosses a line. If the contestants keep asking for famous collaborators, they should change the show title to "Singing With The Stars" .

No, I was disagreeing with your saying Adam had "simple visual effects such as lights." That was kind of an understatement. Nothing simple about those visual effects.

I don't know why Zakk Wilde was allowed to play with James - we all agree it was unfair. I'm not saying it's the same as Adam having stagecraft to enhance his performances. I'm saying both things struck me as unfair. Not necessarily equal, or on the same level of unfairness. That's not the point.

Adam's performances set a precedent which involved a contestant asking for more "production" than usual, and getting it. This seemed like favoritism to a lot of people, though I really don't know. It didn't bother me any more than the Zakk Wilde thing did. If I let this show bother me all the time I couldn't even watch it. It bothers me enough as it is. lol

The show doesn't seem to mind giving some contestants what they ask for regardless of whether it seems to unbalance the competition.

I don't work for them so there's nothing I can do about it.

Yeah, I just listened to TLG. I like it, it's pleasant. But, like I posted on twitter, I don't think I would buy it if it wasn't David. The song is generic and pretty forgettable. Nothing that makes me jump out of my chair. But I know that a major label like RCA would always want to put out a "commercial" single like that as the first single. At least, David co-wrote this one. Maybe the rest of the album will be more diversified.

Oh, new Kris song! I have to go work right now, but I'll listen later for sure!

I can't hear Cook's song - I understand what you're saying, but I'm curious - is it in different style from what he's done in the past? I'll hear it soon, I guess. I wish I could comment more on it. Wish I could hear Kris's song, too, because the title gets me excited and I understand it's rockabilly-sounding, which is a sound I like, usually. The title makes me laugh. ("Shut That Door And Keep That Devil Out.") Not that the song is funny, probably, but it seems like fun.

No, it's definitely similar. Very much a pop-rock radio friendly style. I'd say it's a cross between Heroes and Come Back to Me. It has some of the pop-ish elements of CBTM, but it's more uptempo (and the lyrics are better). It's definitely catchy and an ear-worm, it's just not very original and doesn't really stand out to me as a song I'll want to listen to for years to come.

Okay, just listened to Kris' new song! It's super fun! Definitely has that old-school rockabilly sound. It's not my favorite style and I don't necessarily wish it's on his next album, but it's a very fun song performed live!

Thanks!

I want to hear the Kris song - I'm a big fan of his more dynamic stuff. I like his ballads, too, just that ballads are more common. He's versatile and can go for many styles and moods - dark, fun, romantic - don't ask me why but this this reminds me most of Frank Sinatra. Different genre, but. Whatever.

Cook: I like that you called it an "earworm," because that's important! Looking at it all like it's business, you have to interest the greatest number of people. Somehow that seems to mean, these days - slightly generic sounding songs as lead singles. Hopefully as an artist you get a big hit that establishes you and brings you a lot of attention. Anyhow, I hope to hear it soon and I hope it's a huge hit.

I watched Kris's song silent. Ha. Had to. It looks like the band is really into it. Drew's drumming (though all I can see are the sticks - looks a little mechanical to me. I probably just miss Ryland). Wish I could see Andrew more. Love the bit where Torres and Cale move together. Kris always looks like he's transported to another realm. I hope he gets to play that venue again or do other club performances while he's in L.A. Great to see him with the band again.

Looks like Ryland was at the show! (Still on tour, though). Word is that he tried to get back in time to rehearse but couldn't (he was in Colorado). I'm getting this from MJ's blog - guess you guys can, too, if you want.

Oh yeah, the Cook song is definitely an earworm I believe. But I'm sure you know what I think of the popular music that's on the radio right now. Mainly, it's not my cup of tea. Sometimes I can get obsessed with a pop song and I play it on repeat for a while (it happened with Bruno Mars' Grenade a couple of weeks ago!), but this kind of songs inevitably falls into the "disposable music" category for me. It's like chocolate. You eat chocolate and miammm it's so good and then you eat some more and then you ate too much of it and you feel ill and you don't want to eat chocolate ever again. But inevitably, a couple of weeks after, you still want to eat chocolate, but maybe a different kind. Anyway, it's like that for me and I do that as well with some catchy pop songs. With the songs that are meaningful to me or that I can listen and discover something new each time, the "it makes me ill" part doesn't happen.

So essentially, that's what I think of Cook's song. It's a good piece of chocolate. In the end though, I can't help but think that, if I wasn't a Cook fan to start with, I would listen to this song and think that I wasn't the target audience and I would instead go listen to some Arcade Fire/Hey Rosetta!/Mother Mother/etc. Which is probably what I'll end up doing next week when I'll have listened to TLG for a few days on repeat.

I was reading a book about Artie Shaw, big band/jazz clainet player, whose music I have loved since I was about 9 or 10 years old and wore out my parents' records. He was under contract to RCA, as well. The book is called "Three Chords For Beauty's Sake." I think it refers to something he used to say. "Three chords for beauty's sake, one for the bank." A realistic way to look at being a popular musician. For everyone this means something different, I guess.

I still need to hear these songs, dang it!!

I haven't listened to David's song yet as I can't download from where I am but I couldn't resist Kris's. It's like old school hillbilly rock and it's crazy catchy. I kinda love it and I totally get it when he said it was kinda a joke but kinda not. I love the uptempo feel, and just the sense of fun in it. I don't know how it fits with his other music he's been writing. It makes me curious about who he wrote it with. and what musical direction he's going in. Don't know if I want a whole album of rockabilly...but maybe I do...lol? reminded me a bit of Jack White and his recent projects.

Someone on the Kris/Viper Room thread on MJ's just recapped the concert, and some of the stuff Kris said made me laugh out loud a couple of times. The guy really has an incredibly quick wit.

It makes me curious about who he wrote it with. and what musical direction he's going in. Don't know if I want a whole album of rockabilly...but maybe I do...lol? reminded me a bit of Jack White and his recent projects.

I thought somebody said that he said he and the band wrote it.

Kris is versatile, I wish he could just put anything on his album he felt like. Even if the styles are unrelated. Sometimes I think too much thought is put into making a perfect "album" and a lot of great songs never get heard. I also wish every album had about 20 songs on it, which was impossible once without having two LPs, but isn't any longer.

By the way, missaddicted, I liked your chocolate analogy. :)

Hee! Thanks! It wasn't a concious decision at the time, but I think I was inspired by some real life events. I had prepared a chocolate cake last night (we do that for birthdays at my work) and right before writing my post, I had just put the icing on the cake (chocolate icing of course!). And right after I finished my post, we ate the cake. LOL. Anyway, I just read my post again, and yes, I still think it's a good analogy!

And listening to TLG some more didn't make me change my mind about it. I'm kind of bored about it, but at least, there is David's voice, which is always a plus. He'll perform it live on Idol this week, so maybe that'll help me like the song more. I mean, I don't hate it, but it's not blowing my mind either.

Mmmm. That sounds good. Wish I worked with you! They gave me a chocolate cake on my birthday but it was just from the store. Next time I eat chocate cake, though, I'm going to think of pop music. Ha.

Thanks Missaddicted - I was able to listen to it, and kinda agree. The thing the song does have going for it is David's voice. He's got an incredibly appealing voice. And live is always better so I'm excited to see him perform it on Idol this week. Plus ear worms are ear worms you can't fight them.

I would hate to have an actual earworm, whatever that may be, but it's goog when a song is an earworm. I mean, good. (That was an actual typo. lol!)

So...so far, this year, we've had Adam, Constantine, Fantasia, and we'll have David Cook. (Was JHud on? I tend to be inattentive.) It's been a sparse year for winners and other former contestants. Did you know that in the past two seasons, there were around 14 or 15 former contestants who performed each season? And not all of them had new music to promote. (I Wiki'ed it.) Some were even on twice in a year. Last year they had four S8 contestants on - but all had record deals. This year, they've had one S9 contestant - I assume Crystal will be wheeled out at some point, as well. Archie and Cook have been on the last two years. Carrie is trotted out frequently, as well.

There's been a previous winner/contestant on the show every week actually. Adam for top 13, Lee for top 12, Jennifer Hudson for top 11, Fantasia for top 11 redux, Constantine for top 9, Kelly for top 8 and we know that David will be there for top 7. I was actually telling myself recently that one per week was pretty good! Also, this year, they didn't have three weeks of semi-finals (and there weren't any outside performers during that week this year), so that might be why it seems like there are less previous contestants that are highlighted. I think they're doing pretty good.

I forgot Lee.

In season 8 they had Michael Johns and Carly Smithson (duet), and Brook White (in the semis). Then, Kelly (top 13), Carrie (Top 11), Ruben (Top 10), David Cook (Top 9) , Kellie Pickler (Top 8 ), Jennifer Hudson (Top 7), and David Archleta (Top 7, week 2). That's two or three more than this season - your'e right - not that significant a difference. I think all the former winners performed, that season, though. I guess we'll see if that happens this season.

As we speak, I'm listening to Shut That Door etc. I didn't know Kris could do this kind of thing! Ha. These blues songs all follow that repetitive pattern and I never really was into it. Fun song, though. Eh.

Update (15 min. later): Damn that song is stuck in my head now!

Never heard Kris sing like that before (did I? I don't think so, anyway). He's got a lot of sides.
