You know, as far as international exposure goes, Idols are not often publicized outside the U.S. (and maybe a bit in Canada). It happened for Kelly because she had huge hits and they pushed Adam like their lived depended on it, but otherwise, it didn't really happen for anybody else. I'm sure Daughtry is still mostly unknown to a lot of people outside North America and so is Carrie. They sent Archie do some shows in England, but they never actively pushed his career there. Same thing for Jordin I believe. David Cook didn't get that treatment either. Also, a lot of American acts are unknown in Europe, same goes for super popular European acts that are unknown in American. The music scenes are actually quite different. So I guess I'm not that surprised they're concentrating their efforts in the U.S. right now. Touring internationally can be really really expensive.

Not going to lie - love Red Dwarf -- especially the early years. Although, it's more than a little rude and gross at times.

Yeah, he'll probably win some over. But does it really have to be like this? I think he could be opening for bands where there wouldn't be much (or any) scorn from fans. Remember that Fray concert in Virginia, last year, where he was cheered like he was "a Beatle" just for showing up in the audience? Fans like that have no scorn. Or the radio concert with Boys Like Girls? Why should he have to play for tough crowds? It makes no sense to me. He just played in San Francisco and was very well received.
(ETA: Not that the crowd is bad. I have no idea! Probably great. But I stilll need to be convinced that opening for BNL is good.)
All bands have to play for tough crowds. Or they do if they want to make new fans out of them. I love the headling concerts too, they're kind of special - and I'd love to see one, and the tour with GRO has actually been my favourite line-up so far. But, this is a good thing for Kris and the band. Tough crowd but they are loyal music lovers. They will make new fans out of this. Sure some won't be impressed but those people are never going to be impressed. That Idol bias will hold them back from enjoying anything from Idol. It's their loss quite frankly. There's still a huge bias towards Idol out there. One of my favourite music hosts has stated quite emphatically that he will never play anything from Idol. I love the guy but it's a total blind spot of his, and it's his loss.
I think we're making two different points. Unless you're saying Kris should deliberately be booked in front of tough crowds most of the time.

I think accidentally being in front of a tough crowd is one thing. But it's obviously not something musicians seek out. I think the idea is to find recepetive audiences. Isn't the idea usually to find a band to open for that has a similar sound, or vibe, or one whose fans will probably appreciate the artist?
Anyhow, maybe the fans will like Kris. A few tweets don't mean much.

I don't actually think the crowd is that tough - no fruit remember? Some disgruntled tweeters sure, but I bet they sat in their seats or went to the bar not exactly rioting or heckling. I have yet to hear of any heckling or booing happening at these opening dates.

Is the way to market a fresh, potentially hot young pop star to have him open for BNL? Why does he even need to win over those fans? He should be marketed to a completely different type of audience.
Here are some better situations (than he's been in), in my opinion: He's the opener, with a couple of young bands who are new, not big yet, but creating some buzz. Or maybe he's one of several new acts touring together. Or he opens for a current, hot band that draws mainly a younger crowd, and I could name a lot of them.
The people who hear his songs on the radio should be hearing him live. He doesn't need to go outside his demographic, yet - he still needs to win over that demographic as a concert artist. I don't feel he's gaining those young fans on this tour, except when he plays theme parks, maybe.
I think his management is intentionally marketing him to a thirtysomething demographic with HAC or AC tastes. And I don't get it. He's young and his music appeals most to young audiences.

missaddicted, just saw your post on international audiences for Idols. Not wanting to contradict you but Daughtry played arena shows in England and Scotland just this past winter. I remember reading about it. They opened for Nickleback. I think they're pretty well known there.
Also, I looked up Carrie and she's had the #2 country album in Canada, #2 in the UK, and #3 in Australia (in 2009).
BTW, I hope the 15 year old who wins Idol next year will also be a country artist. That would be my dream come true. Don't you guys agree? Can't wait.
