I thought Danny sounded good. And it sounded like something his fans would like. I've always thought he had a strong voice.. just you know, not for ME to listen to. (musical divide)

But, I completely agree on the awkward. That was a whole lot of awkward. From not facing the camera during the interview segment, to asking to be on Ellen's show, to the whole "the guy who wrote this song's wife died too" moment. The thing is I like Danny, he's like a goofy cousin or something. He just makes me want to tell him to stop talking. (and then there's that whole musical divide thing)

I'm getting to see most of the show now, due to MJ's clips.

Watching Jermaine's singout. I remember when I first saw him, I thought he'd be one of the best. He has a nice tone in his lower register. He also puts the lyrics across. He really should take some singing lessons to improve his rough edges. And also STFU when he's not sangin'.

Yeah, it's funny, I didn't think Danny sounded good. I never really loved how he sounded, maybe I just forgot. He just sounded pitchy and out of breath and goaty, to me.

Your recap of his patter was great.

Oh, I almost forgot... I need to say something about Ellen. Her comedy is falling flat (just as I thought it did on SYTYCD -- that was the show, right?). It's not especially funny, but also, the timing of it is wrong. Like the way she tried to riff on Simon's pronunciation (when Ryan said it, it was drily funny. But it only needed to be said once, not ten times). I don't think interjecting comedy into the comments works. If you are judging, be a judge. Maybe something funny will come out, but it should be natural or spontaneous. Not forced, or (it seems, sometimes) scripted or rehearsed. She can't be a judge and a comic at the same time. Or, shouldn't.

Then there's the tension that seems palpable between her and Simon. It may not even really be there, but we the audience sense that one of these people has to win against the other. Maybe because unlike the other two, they're big stars. Ellen has her own show, she's the star of it, she controls it. She's huge. It must be weird for her to go on a show where she's just one of four judges and she isn't in control of anything. And where Simon is the star. And he seems to pay no attention to her at all.

Hi! Got home late and just finished watching the show (or fast-forwarding through it) and reading your comments.

First, I should have actually participated in a pool (well, for the guys's side), because I was pretty sure both John and Jermaine would leave. John seemed like a good guy, but he just wasn't good enough and I very much disliked Jermaine, so no tears there. I don't hate Tim or anything, but yeah, I hope he leaves next week (not sure he will though). Todrick as well. The 6 other guys are just stronger than these two. Even little Aaron.

On the girls's side, at the end, I was actually convinced that Lacey was going home, but no, it was Haeley. Not too sad about that for sure. Lacey has to leave next week though, I'm kind of growing an irrational dislike for her, so I hope she leaves earlier than later. Michelle? Heh. Didn't really care one way or another.

Why can't they just sit on stools and sing some decent songs?

I know right? That whole group number made me laugh for all the wrong reasons. The auto-tune was ridiculous.

[small voice] I liked Danny. [/small voice]. Not enough to buy the song or the album, but I found him enjoyable tonight! Maybe I'm in a good mood. I thought he sounded good and that he had improved his stage presence. I also didn't mind his talk with Ryan. Yeah, I must be in a good mood.

THIS! She seems uncomfortable to me and her humour is forced at the moment. She's naturally a funny person but the Idol environment is making her try too hard or something. I think she has some good advice but we don't need the schtick. And yep, it's tense.

See, you say so much with so little. While I say so little with so much. Yep. It's tense, all right.

And I guess I never have understood why, as a big star with her own show, Ellen would want to be...Paula, basically. Makes no sense. And I have the feeling it's probably not what she thought it was, now that she's in it.

You know, I think you guys always did like Danny's voice more than I did, anyhow.

Aw, thanks.

She probably thought it would be fun but Idol is such a machine, and Simon is the big dog on the show. He's pretty much done what he wanted from day one. Simon is also a charming, funny guy (when he's not telling you that you suck on National tv) and I think his personality when he gets his way is much different than his personality when he doesn't get his way. And Ellen is a big enough star that Simon will not always get his way this season.

Well D'uh. He did start out my favourite. :)

I liked John Park a lot on his singout. I thought he sounded really good. There is just something sleep-inducing about him. I actually fell asleep watching him. He seemed happy or relieved to be done. I like a gracious, positive exit.

Next week, Scott and Matt. A lot of pissed off people on the blog who think Matt should get a solo, not just the Tell Her About It number with Scott, who apparently will also have a solo.

I can understand that. I also think Matt should get to sing one of his originals and not a cover at this point. Further, I've already seen them do Tell Her About It, live, and so have a lot of other people.

Maybe it has something to do with Scott being signed by someone and putting out a CD (if he is. I don't know). I don't know how it works, on Idol.

Do. Not. Want. Scott and Matt's missed finale performance. I'd rather they both sang by themselves too.

(This Whitesnake thing is pure love - I can't stop watching it)

This is a really good point. Can't add much except to say I agree with it. Except I have never, ever thought Simon was charming.

Haha! Well, he was mine too...

I think Scott is releasing an album next week or in two weeks? Really soon anyway. I don't have the details, but it must be an indie label.

I would probably prefer to hear Matt sing more than Scott for sure.

Oh, I forgot my original point about Matt. Everyone was mad he doesn't get a solo, but I was wondering, since he isn't actually signed, if it isn't nice of them just to have him back on the show at all.

Not that I understand why you need to have a record coming out to be on the show. Especially when the record has nothing to do with an Idol contract.

So last year when they had the Top 36, they didn't do the sing-offs for the voted-off ones, right? Seems like the three winners from each group got to sing again.

Yeah, it's nice for sure that they have Matt back. And Scott too, since he isn't signed with 19, so he shouldn't matter to them. Last year, they also invited back Brooke, Michael Johns and Carly during the semis. I think the semis shows can be a great showcase for the Idols that are not signed by 19 (and for the ones that are signed as well!). So, yeah, it's already a good thing that they invite them back and not forget about them completely.

Yes, that's correct.

Oh, yeah I forgot about that! Works for me.. more Kris... less whoever.

Although it is nice to say good-bye to the non top ten. It's their only moment afterall. And sometimes the good-bye is their best performance. Shane Wiebe, Jacob Hoggard - looking at you guys. And sometimes you get Haeley. 8O (love Haeley, she's a cutie - but that was not good)
