How do they move on? You realize that the residential school system didn't end until 1967? Maybe you weren't born then but I was 27 years old in 1967. I see the affects on people who were raised by those so traumatized by the residential schools. How long do you suppose that will go on? It may well go on for generation after generation.

You are assuming that each and every individual in the res school system were brutalized in the worst possible manner... There have been reports by students that they were not treated in this manner, in fact, some have come forward to defend the educators against what they perceive as unfounded allegations.

Further, there are a large number of children (and grand children and great grand children) that are claiming damages.

That just doesn't make sense anymore

The Romans stole my ancestors' property around 45BC. Bloody Italians, they owe me.

Yep.

I was in a (U.S.) residential school myself, and I ain't real comforted or convinced by folks beating their breasts decades later. Sounds an awful lot like the folk who "deeply regret" the Trail of Tears.

Not like any of 'em are offering to give the land back, mind.

Like it or not, this stuff happened. No changing that. Time to shift the debate to the future.

IF they are going to give some of the land back from the Trail of Tears I got some coming. Not holding my breath though.
Where I grew up the natives went to the same schools as the rest of us and it is kind of an isolated area so we never even knew about these schools. My sister went to a girls school in Victoria to finish high school and we sort of thought all residential schools were like this.

The last Residential school was closed in 1996, not 1967. It wasn't 50 years ago it was less than 20 years ago.

As for the asinine comments like walters, First Nations land in Canada has been stolen and treaties broken. You can't compare land taken by a conquering peoples. The Brits "bought" the land from the First Nations people through treaties or promises of treaties. Treaties and promises that have been broken over and over again.

The commission is doing what they were mandated to do. Bring to light everything about what the government did and didn't do when it comes to the Residential school system. It was known it would be ugly. It is part of the agreement made along with restitution. Suck it up buttercup. If you don't like hearing what YOUR government was responsible for then don't listen.

Especially when they can get free money by dwelling on it.

We already know what the government and the churches did. It is time to move on and quit spending the money on bureaucracy. Put that money to where it will do the most good and that is on the ground on the rez.

No, we don't "already know", because there are many that deny the residential school system was bad. The comminsion was part of the deal made by the government. It will continue on and ALL of the ugly's will be exposed to the light of day. No more covering up, no more "it wasn't that bad". Just the ugly truth put out there for all to see and no one can deny.

Heard an interesting radio program on CBC featuring a Canadian FN archeologist.... She used an extremely interesting phrase in referencing the (Canadian) FN communities... That phrase was "the first of the First Nations"

The direct purpose was in establishing a pecking-order among the FN communities in recognizing that not all are 'the first'.

That said, there appears to be an argument that many (possibly most?) of the FN communities in Canada do not have the same claim as the actual 'first' nation.

The deniers will deny regardless. That is just how they are.

Yes there were many children who died don't dispute that. So many say it happened
before we we born and that is also true. Therefore it is up to you to understand what
happened because there are all kinds of children who lived and nothing was done to
ease their pain. Many are still alive today and the thousands that were tormented
affected the lives of their children. We are not dealing with ancient history only the
ancient history of our young people. This is a cloud over Canada. Believe it or not
a cheque alone is not the answer. This country uprooted the Native populations to
ensure they would be assimilated without a culture of their own. Reservations were
temporary because the whiteman was intent on ridding themselves of a problem.
Didn't happen so now they do have to cut them a cheque.
Its like the government employees the government raided the pension funds paid into
by the employees and spent the money now they are complaining that they need to
reform the pension fund. The truth is the government employees union wanted to
administer their own funds decades ago and the government was too busy spending
it as a source of revenue. Canada disrespected the Japanese and allowed close
friends to sell off the wealth and put the people in camps. We had election slogans
such as beware of the yellow peril.
How did these things happen? We were allowed to ignore what was done to the Natives
so picking on the next group became natural. We treated Italians and Ukrainians with
disrespect as well. It is not just about money its about understanding and we make
excuses and excuses demonstrate we still don't have an understanding.
