Canada selling asbestos to India

Canada sells millions of tons of high grade coal to Japan. When I lived in Fernie, BC and worked at Kaiser Resources, I saw the trains bound for Port Moody and then Japan.

Canada also sells millions of cubic feet of natural gas to the United States, along with millions of barrels of oil.

All of these contribute to air pollution, probably killing more people than asbestos. Shall we stop selling coal, gas and oil? For nothing, but sentimental and politically correct reasons?

Asbestos is a resource with its own risks, no different from coal, gas or oil. Those who use it know the risk as well as they know the risks involved using coal, oil and gas.

Also, eating bread, cake, cookies and pasta is an undisputed source of obesity. Shall we stop selling (or in the case of Africa, give away) wheat, corn, barley and rye? We all know that obesity kills, again, probably far more than asbestos. Or how about our reknown beer, whiskey and wines? They cause alcoholism, killing or destroying lives as much or more than asbestos. Should we just stop trading because ultimately we all die, anyway?

Natural Resources Canada has been lobbied successfully by the Quebec asbestos industry to come out on the side of industry. They buried the study that showed chrysotile asbestos as a harmful substance, highly toxic and a threat to human life. Government officials will sell their souls to the devil for a few votes.

I bet there are other things that are exported to places with few or no safety regs. The ethics of some companies are really poor. And there are things imported that aren't all that healthy either.
Hopefully anyone using asbestos still is handling it properly and using it wisely.
