You worked so hard refuting this man's opinion - must have hit a hot button. Didn't know you had one. Thought you were stone cold. More of a superiority complex than most of the forum regulars.

Don't like my avatars Beav? Pretty women bother you? Awww shucks.

You made it through and I congratulate you - finding some Canadian folk who don't mind reading criticism and taking it in
good spirits as Americans have had to do for so many years.

Amazon has Canadian headquarters as well as U.S. and they cross-ship many international books of interest. I use them quite often during Christmas - it's so easy ordering on the Canadian side for my family.

Is that an insulting thing to be?

No it's an unfortunate thing to be. It means you're from Newfoundland.

I thought Newfies were a proud and strong people....never took them to be the butt of jokes - must be an inside thing I didn't get....and not really an insult I hope...thanks...

Thanks for the link sanch, I think I will put this book on my wish list, I just hope they ship to the States.

You can add it to your neocon religious library, have a happy fools day.

My neo-con religious library includes Fire & Ice and The Vanishing Country.

I tried Amazon last night, they don't have it, I'll have to wait till Monday morning to call the place sanch suggested and order it.

It's 60 beaver bucks and this is not a book that is going to end up at Strands.

The neocon label is wrong. If you look at the sponsors of urc and the other books and shows they put on it is an edgy outfit that is attempting to get beyond dogma and stereotypes.

Their objective is to demystify and deconstruct and this is not going to be an easy task in a country where anti-americanism is a dominant cultural referent. And it is taught from grade school on and is especially intense in the universities.

The Left Coasters don't like us because we have to keep going up there to work their industries, man their fleets, and steal their women. All that "fair-trade" coffee and hash oil brings laziness and impotence, also jealousy.

Canadians are superior to Americans only in our arrogant belief that we are better than any other country, in any way, shape, or form.

No, seriously, we are superior.

My mom told me I was superior, and I believe her still.

Pretty rude if you ask me. But if one has never seen an attractive woman how can one judge?

When I want to have a nice time in terms of meeting nice warm loving people, I go to two places on this earth, Atlantic Canada and parts of the Southern US.

When I am in the mood to be grumpy, I either take the train to Manhattan or fly to Quebec and speak English.

I totally agree about Atlantic Canada and the South, even Manhatten where people are never interested or impressed by tourists. I always feel like I'm a nussance while I'm there. However, I never have had any problems in Quebec, except once when i was walking around and forgot to take off my CDN flag on my backpack on St. Jean Baptiste day. All day I heard people macking snide remarks in Frecnh and I couldn't figure out why. Looking back on it I think I was clearly in the wrong. Personally, I think Torontonians or even us good Vancouverites are the grumpiest of all the Canucks. Especially, us Vacnouverites. You can be walking in the middle of the woods all alone and come upon another lowly traveller and neither one of you will think to say hello, or even say have a good day. We're very snobby here and we stick to with our cliques. I've met people who have lived in the city for 10 years and quite litterally 90% of their friends are not originally from Vancouver.

I'm just saying if you ever visit don't expect a warm welcome from the weather or the people!

Newfies are a strong, proud people but, became the butt of jokes for 2 reasons I think: 1. Newfoundland has always been a poor place even compared to the Atlantic provinces. Things are finally changing now. 2. Newfoundland has also always had a large "outport" or "fishing village" population which over the centuries has produced a dialect and vocabulary unlike anything else in the English speaking world, not too mention inter-breeding. I think the strange accent produced the jokes from us mainlanders.

Well, to be honest, when I was in Vancouver my Newfie friendliness was suppressed by the fact that I was sure that every person around me was either a crazed drug addict or a Triad hitman. Didn't help that my only companion was some hick from Northern Ontario who's more of a rustic than me...

I met my first actual homeless person, though, good times...

C'mon to California if you want friendly!

There is nothing odd about chatting with a few folk at the deli in the supermarket, and ending up at the outside cafe having a great time while the groceries wilt in our autos....

Happens all the time - now supermarket shopping has become "who will I meet today?"....my most memorable couple were from Paris - buying aspirin - they didn't see the drug store so went into the supermarket. I showed them where the aspirin was in my mangled French - and we went for coffee after checking out. I still have their e-mail and their address - They were driving along the coast down to L.A. to fly home.

Language isn't a problem either - because nobody is embarrassed about trying out their communications skills and as long as there isn't a snob in the group....people aren't afraid to try....Asians especially are wonderful when I am scanning new veggies to try out and they give me tips on how to cook things I have never seen before.

I always think of Newfies harvesting their catch in a boiler of a storm with the ship rolling and lurching among the waves and guys with their wet gear on with long beards and very tired eyes.... (must have seen it in a movie maybe)...but I cling to the idea. Strong strong people.

8) Yes we are, but it's fallacious.

Someday we shall trip and find ourselves face down in the same shit as everone else because it's down there, all ya have to do is trip. 8O

Wednesdays Child..........I like your "everchanging?? avatar" Beautiful is as beautiful does says Forrest Gump, and so far you do beautifully.

I made some real close personal up front special long lasting (you get the picture) friends from Newfoundland while working up in N. Ontario years ago. We played music together, drank together, and partied together. You knew your back was covered when you were with them. Plain spoken people who took no shit. We still write today. Great folks.

Most Newfoundlanders DON'T like to be called Newfie. Like calling a Frenchman a frog. Not nice.

And we are superior. Damn straight.

RE: Canada isn't morally

I think Newfoundland and Tasmania have similar 'dissociative' issues...
that meaning that mainland people often make jokes at their expense, but are only too happy to accomodate them when they turn up on your doorstep. I'm pretty sure it's the no BS and straight down the line attitude that appeals to others intuition, and that being said others still have a lot to learn about losing their degrees in bullshitology, perhaps to trade it for a simpler uncomplicted life of plain speaking and truthfulness.

Might be a good way to re-educate politicians...

I lived in Newfoundland for five years, and I loved the people and the Province. Unfortunatly the weather is not for the faint of heart, me. God almighty NFL'ers are the toughest people I have ever met, nothing gets them down. We had 980 cm snow one winter and the NFL'ers made the best of it, me all I did was shovel the driveway and then rake the roof crying and moaning and bitching the entire winter. It went on until June, it was inhumane. In the end I felt like I was in training for the Olympics but they don't have a catagory for Shoveling, if they did I'd be wearing the gold. NFL would make a great place to put Federal Prisons because I can assure you after a few years of spending time outside in the Winter, Spring also know as Winter and Fall is also know as Winter the chances of these inmates re-offending would be slim. God bless the Newfoundlanders.
