Haha Bono forgot Alberta!

I guess only the Albertans noticed. If they didn't apologize for it, I would have missed it.

Correction: Justin forgot Alberta. Probably not the first time or the last.

Here we go. 2+2=17. If Trudeau had forgotten to mention any other province, ... no problem but ALBERTA ... well, that's different. It's an outrage.

Looks like the party only went on to 3PM.

I remember the train.

Leaf's winning the cup. Ancient.

A couple of things wrong with the video. There were two pictures of Pierre Trudeau in it. In 1967, Trudeau was a relatively unknown cabinet minister and the flamboyant picture shown was from the future. Pearson was Prime Minister. Several other ministers, like Judy LeMarch were better known than Trudeau. He was still off the radar in '67.

There was a picture of Stompin' Tom Connors, too. He hadn't "gone national" yet. I remember being in PEI around 1970 and seeing the local signage for one of his concerts up on the North shore of the Island. We started hearing about him nationally in the early '70s. In '67, he was still playing local beer halls on the Island and he was also off the radar.

I wonder who made that video clip? Someone with a faulty memory or someone who wasn't there ...

Did you see the military Tattoo? Back in 1967, We still had armed forces ...substantially more than we have, now. The unified forces with the Seven-Up delivery man green uniforms were still in the future. As their Centennial project, the DND put together two 2500 man shows that toured the country. They were spectacular things with bands, marching, sports, calisthenics, obstacle courses, horse artillery, naval cannon races, reinstactments from each period of our history. It was really well done. One group toured the East, the other the West and they met in Montreal for a combined 5000 man show at the Autostade at Expo'67. I was lucky enough to see that performance and. remember it vividly.

p.s. There were no Snowbirds in 1967. There were the "Golden Centenniares" which was a continuation of the old Golden Hawks air demonstration squadron. After Centennial, rather than disbanding the Centenniares, they were re-badged the "Snowbirds" (after a then popular Anne Murray song) and they live on to this day ... still flying Tudors!

My memories are a bit patchy. I was not yet in elementary school at the time. I remember standing in line and seeing the train (I loved trains at the time). I remember playing that song over and over and over on my phonograph (I had the 45!). I remember the special coins (back in the day when special coins actually meant something and not the stuff we have now every other year). Still have the nickels somewhere.

I probably saw other stuff as well. Not sure how much we got as I was in Saskatoon at the time.

Every city, town, hamlet, whistle stop in the country did SOMETHING and there are Centennial Parks, Libraries, Arenas, Community Centres right across Canada. My name is in at least one time capsule. Those were happening everywhere, too. The Centennial trains with their "Oh Canada" whistles toured the whole country. There were at least two of those, maybe more.

As I said, I remember the train. I am sure there was more. I just don't have any memories of it.

If you go on youtuber, you won't find an official Canada 150 song. At least I couldn't. There are a lot of Canada 150 songs, but nothing blessed by le gouvernement du Canada.

So, I'll post this.

Having watched the ceremonies for a couple hours now I am very glad not to have taken 5 hours to drive to Ottawa, 4-5 hours to stand in line and then had to watch this.

I have enjoyed Price Chuck's speech however.

I know you weren't asking me but this sounds like something else we can share.

I have been to 9 of the 10 provinces missing only Newfoundland & Labrador (single province). I have not been to any territories.
Get to the Yukon you won't be disappointed ., IMHO .

Mother's side. Newfoundland.

I just sent my cousin a text wishing her a Happy Canada Day and she said

"Why thank you! Sorry"

She didn't say sorry.

Three buddies of mine and I had knives pulled on us in St.Johns in 1974 because they thought that we were U.S.Navy.

True story.
Did you sing God Save the King ?

No but it was certainly noticeable when he went from B.C. to the Yukon and then Saskatchewan and not coming back to Alberta . And how we all know sound bites are everything in politics , love and money .

From the Youtube clip

Expo 67 - Canada's Centennial celebration song:

C-A-N-A-D-A. Lester B. Pearson was the PM, Pierre Trudeau was Minister of Justice.

As for Stompin' Tom Connors, he may well have been there since these kind of big events would try to get as many acts as possible to attend since there was only so many to go around and likely not to many to represent PEI...

My name is Tom Craddock, and I and my sister and two brothers were the kids who recorded the english version, and 4 french girls sang the french version. They overdubbed the singing to make it sound like many kids. If you look at the back of the original 45, you will see us in the studio. Bobby Gimby, went all over Canada claiming the song was sung by over 30 kids. I am honoured to have participated in an historic part of our history, and I thank Mr. Gimby.

Expo '67 had a different song from Bobby Gimby's CANADA:

Yes Trudeau was Justice Minister and pretty much a nobody until the 1968 convention that made him leader, passing over the Liberal party establishment. Paul Martin Senior was the annointed one. Je me souviens.

None of us had ever heard of Stompin' Tom until a few years later. He was there but he wasn't ... not yet, anyway.

Probably the same idiot Rogers uses for their TV guide descriptions. A couple of months back there was a series called 'Canada: The Story of Us. When it came to the War of 1812 the show description read, "A look at Canada's War of Independence, the War of 1812, that unified the country and its many nationalities against the British."
But let's face it, incompetence is becoming the norm these days.

No, but we all drank for free when they figured out that we weren't Americans. There was a big U.S. Naval Air station at Argentina, NFLD. that operated from mid WW II until the mid-1990's. They did not manage to make friends with he locals over a half century, there and they left a bitter taste with the Newfoundlanders. It may continue to this day. I imagine that they saw themselves as occupiers rather than allies. Suffice to say that the US military is widely despised, there.

p.s.The Yanks issued themselves an Arctic Service medal for being stationed in Argentina. What a fecking joke.
