Canada could have a Universal Basic Income (UBI) by next year

Well that was unexpected.

Liberal delegates endorse a universal basic income, reject capital gain tax hike

Liberal delegates to the party's policy convention have overwhelmingly endorsed a resolution calling for the establishment of a universal basic income (UBI) in Canada, while also rejecting a call to hike the capital gains tax.

By a vote of 77 per cent, Liberal members on hand for the policy plenary today backed a call to permanently implement an income program similar to the Canada emergency response benefit (CERB), which kept millions of people afloat with monthly cheques during the first wave of the pandemic.

With 8.7 per cent of Canadians living below the poverty line and thousands more struggling to make ends meet, backers of this policy say a UBI would "ensure that communities at risk (including Indigenous peoples) are able to feel financially secure."

We already have a Universal Basic Income. It is called welfare. Don't even have to contribute like with EI.
I am surprised the libs voted against more taxes. Probably found out it would apply to them as well as to working people.

Yep, the UBI pilot project in Ontario was SO successful it encourged 12.5% of the recipients to simply quit their jobs because they were getting free govt cheese. And sadly, that was after YEARS of the Libturds telling people on ODSP that there just wasn't enough money to give them a decent increase.

It's pretty goddam sad that Trudeau has to resort to vote buying. Especially by bandying an idea around of something that has failed to deliver every...single...time everywhere it's been tried. But that's Groper boy for ya. He never met a colossally stupid idea he didn't like.

Yep to whatever the set rate of basic income is, I'm thinking $2K minimum set with COVID dollars, private pension would not be affected.

I'm not sure about UBI, personally.

That level of social welfare would probably be better spent on free post-secondary education but that's a provincial matter.

Wynne government in Ontario was paying $18,000 per year. Test program got whacked 6 months in with the change to Ford.

Was planning to defer CPP until 70 so would love to collect UBI until then. They get it all in the end one way or another.

Not much hope for ambition. Hang out and game.

Would only be more UBI for the educators with free post secondary. Can you imagine the stupid things they will teach just to have a job?

The entire education industry has become obsolete. The jobs are the only thing left and would cause too much disruption to change. Students are not benefitting but the bureaucracy has never had it better. $25 billion spent in Ontario annually. Where is the return on investment?

Doesn't apply to retirees. We have to make due with $1154. No China flu top up either.
In articles written on how to pay for it they discussed how to take over CPP and EI and raise the rates while combining the Welfare and disability programs into it. By enrolling everything in and cutting departments that only a fraction of new spending would be needed.

Just sayin

Ever seen the feds do what is sensible or right? All these programs are intended to provide jobs for party insiders.
