OTTAWA - Canada and Israel are about to complete a number of defence co-operation agreements that will significantly tighten military bonds between the two countries as tensions grow over Iran's nuclear ambitions.
And Defence Minister Peter MacKay refused Wednesday to rule out a mutual-defence agreement that would oblige Canada to come to Israel's defence should the latter be attacked.
Appearing together at a media conference in Ottawa on Wednesday, Mr. MacKay and his Israeli counterpart Ehud Barak said they anticipate negotiations will be completed by the end of the year.
"Israel needs strong, reliable partners, which Canada is certainly one," Mr. MacKay said. "I would argue they could not find a more supportive country on the planet."
Canada, Israel to bolster militaries

It's not really a "Mutual Defence Pact"..... the reality is that it's a one-way street defence pact.... in that we help defend/protect Israel if attacked.

What are the odds of Canada being attacked, or better still.... if Canada was attacked, would we even expect Israeli troops to come along and help defend us?

Probably not, as their argument would be that they need every single one of their own troops to help defend their own nation from their neighbors.

In other words, it's a defence pact, but not really a mutual one.

"The steps that we're taking today are in fact bringing our countries closer together," Mr. MacKay said, "and they are also allowing us to further build on a strong foundation of co-operation that will build tangible results, not just to our two militaries, but to Canada and Israel more broadly."

How?

"The defence co-operation details will be disclosed when we sign," he said.

lol.... like always, we'll never know what exactly we're getting into until after it's all decided and moved forward.... so that anybody who has opposition to the plan have to try and fight it after the fact, which almost never works.

If a Defence Pact makes sense for Canada and there's actually some level of benefit for Canada putting itself on the line for getting into an Israeli war, then fine, do so..... but at it sounds right now, this isn't "Mutual" and is very vague on details.

Because of that, I can not approve.

1) This will happen, but there won't be any debate and most Canadians will find out the details after the fact.
2) Its probably a one way street. I can't see any likely scenarios where Canada is attacked and we call on Israel to defend us. But I can certainly see how Israel could attack Iran and drag Canada into it.

From my understanding, a defensive pact is when you come to the aid of a nation that is attacked... if they start the conflict, then there is no obligation to help them out, because then that'd be an offensive pact.

Thus, hypothetically, if Iran did decide to attack Israel (doubt it), then we'd be obligated to help them.... but if Israel decided to attack Iran instead and go on the offensive, Canada should have every right to give them the finger and tell them to figure their own crap out.

..... At least that's how it should be, but we all know that what "should be" isn't always what actually happens.

You are assuming these people represent Canada's interests, rather than their own. When push comes to shove, Canada will find itself involved in Israel's ethnic cleansing war.

Then perhaps we should restrict ourselves to what we can shoot from our own shores using just rifles. Perhaps we can get Greenland to snap up one of those Islands in the far, far north and Israel can fly from their home-bases in Israel.
