RCMP officer who fired Taser at Robert Dziekanski sues CBC for libel

Source: The Canadian Press: RCMP officer who fired Taser at Robert Dziekanski sues CBC for libel

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The RCMP officer who fired his Taser at Robert Dziekanski at
Vancouver's airport the night the Polish immigrant died has filed a libel lawsuit
against the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

In a writ of summons filed in B.C. Supreme Court, Const. Kwesi Millington asks for
damages from the CBC and claims the network's publications and broadcasts have
defamed him.

Millington was one of four officers who confronted Dziekanski at the airport in
October 2007, and he fired his Taser within seconds of arriving on the scene.

The incident gained worldwide attention after amateur video of the altercation
was released, which appeared to contradict official accounts from the RCMP.

In the writ, which doesn't specify what the CBC published or broadcast that was
defamatory, Millington says his reputation has been seriously injured, he has
suffered embarrassment and distress, and has been brought into public ridicule.

The writ contains allegations that haven't been proven in court and the CBC could
not immediately be reached for comment.

A public inquiry examining Dziekanski's death wrapped up last month.

Really? The CBC accomplished this? The Video & the Truth (or a version of it)
and the Braidwood Inquiry didn't accomplish this? This is....I'm at a loss
for words...

Now that should make the media afraid to present the facts on the news. Next thing you know eveyone that gets an impared conviction will sue the local paper for reporting it.

Huh. I wonder who's going to be on the hook for this Millington's Legal Fee's
when he's suing the CBC? Who's going to be on the hook for the CBC's
Legal Fees'? :-?

Repeatedly Tasering the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation would be
problematic, so I can see this option making sense in some twisted sort
of way, as long as it costs this guy nothing and the Taxpayer continues
to pick up the tab. Ugly....:-|

I've said it before and I'll say it again, these cops did what they were trained to do. It's easy to point fingers at the cops. It's alot tougher to dig to the root of the problem.

The question is where were they trained and by whom .

If you followed the testimony along with their recanting - the screwp by the RCMP Brass - The Officers screwed up - They did not even come close to doing what they were trained to do.

Wrong. They are taught to get an out of control situation under control as quickly as possible. Since most recruits in the last 20 years are physically inept, the taser is now the way officers are trained to accomplish that task.

That's a joke, if 4 cops cannot physically subdue a suspect, they shouldn't be a cop. Are cops not trained in close combat, physical restraints?

My incredulation had to do with this:

That is bullsh*t. Physical fitness is a requirement of the job and there is no excuse for young, healthy people to be otherwise.

4 Officers - Healthy - fit - Guns - Taser - No Plan - The man threatened them with a stapler - within 30 seconds to 1 minute or so of arrival on the scene - tasered 5 times - twice when held against his body -
The Officers them deliberately wrote false statements - proven in testimony - the only reason they had an inquiry was because one young man had a video phone - turned it over to the RCMP - they must have reviewed it - saw the blatant discrepancies between written staements and actual events - informed the young man that it would take 2 years to return his video - he threatened to go to court - video returned

The RCMP are not trained to use force as the 1st option in an event such as occurred in Vancouver - We both know that - their was no direct threat to individuals or Officers that would require the use of the taser so quickly.

This brings forward more evidence that the RCMP should not investigate themselves - to many cases of death involving RCMP Officers that have left a stink and stain on their reputation - and nothing is being done to change that mentality.

If one cop can't physically subdue a suspect he should call for a second. Two cops should be able. The key word is should. Relaxed hiring standards tossed that idea out the window. Their training involves how to avoid close combat, hence the taser.

Considering how justice works in Canada, I hope Millington the Moron enjoys the money.

Please refrain from involving yourself in threads you know so little about.

The RCMP recently hired a 54 year old recruit. The RCMP placed a 6' 2" 120 pound weakling in the Town of Bow Island had a g recently. The standards are in the toilet and the RCMP can only work with what they have.

If you bothered to read my post, I said the priority is to get an out of control situation under control. Since this man did not understand them, talking was not an option.

The reality is that these people start at close to $18/hour. A cashier at Tim's starts at $14/hour. Competent capable people are not attracted to the job. If taxpayers were prepared to start officers at $30/hour, their whining about the quality of officers might not sound so hollow.
