VERIFY: DO HOSPITALS GET PAID MORE FOR COVID-19 CASES?

To date, News 8 could not find any hospitals cited for making inaccurate claims on discharge papers or death certificates.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, Calif. —

If someone with COVID-19 is hospitalized and, or passes away, does the government reimburse hospitals more for that type of care?

It's a question many News 8 viewers have emailed about, and in one particular one, a viewer said: “My boss heard from a doctor that hospitals are paid $9,000 each listed COVID [sic] death.”

In another email, a News 8 viewer said, regarding a friend's relative's passing from cancer: "When they [the family] received the death certificate, the death was listed from COVID-19. When they questioned the hospital about it, the hospital told them that this is what they were told to do because the hospital gets $37,000 per COVID-19 death. How often is this happening?"

News 8 can verify that hospitals do get paid more for COVID-19 related cases. A provision in the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security or CARES Act pays an additional 20% on top of traditional Medicare rates
during the public health emergency.

How much are hospitals getting?

The numbers vary.

During a television interview, a Minnesota state senator said it was $13,000 for someone admitted with COVID-19, and $39,000 if they were placed on a ventilator.

Those estimates, however, have not been verified.

According to a Medicare spokesperson, while hospitals do get reimbursed more for patients on ventilators, "Medicare adjusts hospital payment based on geographic variation in local costs."

So are hospitals inflating the numbers?

While it's possible, there is no proof of it happening.

The Medicare spokesperson said:

"Claims with inaccurate diagnosis or DRG would be subject to recoupment and/or other potential civil or criminal charges for false claims."

To date, News 8 could not find any hospitals cited for making inaccurate claims on discharge papers or death certificates.

Michigan militia caught trying to take back Michigan from Whitmer

Six people charged in plot to kidnap Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer

Six people have been been charged in a plot to kidnap Michigan governor Gretchen Whitmer that involves links to a rightwing militia group, the Federal Bureau of Investigation announced.

The FBI said in an affidavitthat the plot involved reaching out to members of a Michigan militia. The criminal complaint states that the alleged plot involved Whitmer and her second home in northern Michigan.

“Several members talked about murdering ‘tyrants’ or ‘taking’ a sitting governor,” an FBI agent wrote. “The group decided they needed to increase their numbers and encouraged each other to talk to their neighbors and spread their message.”

The affidavit was filed on Wednesday hours after FBI agents raided a home in Hartland Township, a community about an hour outside of Detroit.

The criminal complaint identified the six as Adam Fox, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris, Brandon Caserta, all of Michigan, and Barry Croft of Delaware.

Whitmer, a Democrat, has been the frequent target of protests by often heavily armed anti-lockdown groups who have launched numerous demonstrations against her efforts to control the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. She put major restrictions on personal movement throughout the state and on the economy, although many of those limits have been lifted.

The Detroit News reported that the investigation dated to early 2020 when the FBI learned via social media that individuals were discussing a violent overthrow of several state governments. A confidential paid informant then recorded a meeting between more than a dozen people from several states that took place in Dublin, Ohio.

“The group talked about creating a society that followed the US Bill of Rights and where they could be self-sufficient,” the affidavit said. “They discussed different ways of achieving this goal from peaceful endeavors to violent actions. At one point, several members talked about state governments they believed were violating the US constitution, including the government of Michigan and Governor Gretchen Whitmer.”

Through electronic communications, two of the alleged conspirators then “agreed to unite others in their cause and take violent action against multiple state governments that they believe are violating the US constitution,” the FBI said.

One of the alleged conspirators, Adam Fox, said he needed 200 men to storm the Capitol building in Lansing and take hostages, including the governor, according to the FBI. He said he wanted to try Whitmer for “treason” and would execute the plan before the 3 November election, the government said.

Later, however, the group shifted to targeting the governor’s vacation home, the FBI said.

To the bolded the restrictions were only lifted through court battles by citizens and business owners

American hostage Philip Walton rescued in dramatic military operation: Officials

An American citizen abducted last week in Niger has been rescued during a high-risk U.S. military raid in neighboring Nigeria, officials told ABC News early Saturday.

The mission was undertaken by elite commandos as part of a major effort to free the U.S. citizen, Philip Walton, 27, before his abductors could get far after taking him captive in Niger on Oct. 26, counterterrorism officials told ABC News.

The operation involved the governments of the U.S., Niger and Nigeria working together to rescue Walton quickly, sources said. The elite SEAL Team Six carried out the rescue mission and killed all but one of the captors, according to officials with direct knowledge about the operation.

U.S. and Nigerien officials had said that Walton was kidnapped from his backyard last Monday after assailants asked him for money. But he only offered $40 USD and was then taken away by force, according to sources in Niger.......More
