Gov. Gen. Julie Payette's disdain for the Mounties paid to protect her has resulted in added security risks and unnecessary taxpayer costs, according to RCMP and Rideau Hall sources.
Payette's secrecy and resistance to working with the RCMP routinely sends her protective detail scrambling to fulfil last-minute requests and drives up spending on overtime, hotel and plane tickets, multiple sources told CBC News.
Payette has even made repeated attempts to slip away from her protectors in Canada and abroad, sources say. The force has also had to apologize for her behaviour to foreign security abroad because she treated them so poorly, said sources.
The latest revelations come as the Governor General's office is under an extraordinary workplace review by the Privy Council Office after CBC News reported claims Payette has belittled, berated and publicly humiliated employees. She's also under fire for spending more than $250,000 on renovation projects for her desire for privacy, though after three years in office she still hasn't moved into her official residence.
Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, now list a litany of avoidable expenses that left taxpayers on the hook. They include:
RCMP paying double or triple the price for flights abroad because Payette hadn't decided if she was going on personal or work trips until the last minute. Some international flights have cost up to $12,000.
Hotel rooms with a $400 price tag sitting empty near the Citadelle — her second official residence in Quebec City — because Payette suddenly decided she wanted to go to her cottage north of Montreal, but it was too late to cancel the original booking.
The cost of an additional officer — ranging from an estimated $4,000 to $15,000 per week — on international trips to guard Payette's door because of her repeated attempts to slip away from her protective detail.
"It's infuriating," said one RCMP source with direct knowledge of Payette's protective detail. "She incurs costs that are unbelievable. It's Canadians' money that is not well spent because of someone who is difficult." .....More

Voting liberal would be all the vetting required by trudOWE.Be careful what you wish for comes to mind, TM though I too think she should be shown the door and the sooner, the better for all. That said, judging by the type of person that appeals to the uneducated mind of our little potato - her replacement could very well be much worse. Also, it does not appear that thorough of vetting of personnel is a high priority with this minority government else they would have detected the many red flags on Payette's file when she was being vetted for the position.
A confidence vote would do the same thing. But what ever gets rid of turdOWE is fine. It's an effective measure in order to force the separatists to either opt for an election or not.
Up to them.
Six years till pension . You think sitting members want to chance it ?A confidence vote would do the same thing. But what ever gets rid of turdOWE is fine.
OTTAWA — The federal Liberals are rolling out a $37-billion income-support plan for workers whose earnings have crashed during the pandemic, providing a hint of future changes to the social safety net — and igniting a debate about what should stay.
The details released Thursday outline what the Liberals intend for some four million workers receiving the $500-a-week Canada Emergency Response Benefit, which is set to wind down starting next month.
The CERB will be extended another four weeks, and a new benefit that pays $400 a week for up to 26 weeks will replace it for those ineligible for employment insurance, such as contract, self-employed and "gig" economy workers.
Anyone eligible for EI will get the same minimum for at least 26 weeks and will need to have worked 120 hours to qualify, well below current EI requirements, since many Canadians have been unable to work to the pandemic.
There will also be $500-a-week sickness benefit and caregiving benefit for anyone who has to stay home because they're ill, or because school or daycare is closed.
Changes are also coming to people to keep more of their benefits even while they're working, eliminating the earnings cliff created under CERB that acted as a disincentive to work.
Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough said the changes were designed to give Canadians a longer-term view of the support they could receive, while also acknowledging the outlook beyond 2021 is uncertain.
She said the government's upcoming throne speech will outline plans to close the gaps in the decades-old EI system, and redesign it to reflect how Canadians work now and into the future......More
OTTAWA — Venezuela is staggering in the face of a years-long power struggle, food shortages, hyper-inflation and an exodus of its citizens.
The country’s foreign minister says, Blame Canada.
Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza is part of Nicolas Maduro’s government, which most Western countries no longer recognize, but it does still control most of the country’s institutions. He was speaking through Zoom to a Canadian audience on Thursday, in an event organized by the left-leaning Canadian Foreign Policy Institute.
Canada and most other Western nations have backed Juan Guaidó, a former member of the country’s national assembly who declared himself the interim president in 2019 after Maduro’s re-election in what many say was a fraudulent vote.
In 2017, Canada helped to form the Lima Group, a group of countries, including most of the major countries in North and South America, to call for Maduro to step down and for free elections to be held in the country.
In a lengthy speech Thursday, Arreaza said the Canadian government was attempting to undermine Venezuela to take the nation’s wealth.
“Canada has been in the centre of these events and this means that they want to create the conditions in order to attack Venezuela, to invade Venezuela, because they want to take control of our country and its wealth.”
The Lima Group specifically rules out any type of violence of force as a means to change in Venezuela. The U.S. is not a member of the group, but has said it supports its aims.

Embattled Venezuelan president thanks Canada for support, asks world for more help restoring democracy
Arreaza accused the group of being nothing more than a front for U.S. action.
“No one is going to give any credibility to this group, because they will believe that it is the United States with its regime change policy trying to attack Venezuela.”
Most observers believe the Maduro government’s policies are to blame for the economic crisis hitting the country that has led to food shortages, mass unemployment and a complete collapse of the country’s currency. There have been several large protests in the streets, which the government has met with force. Millions of Venezuelans have also fled the country.
Arreaza said Canada’s push for a change in government and the economic sanctions the country faces are the cause of the country’s problems.
“We have a high inflation level because of the disturbances in our economy. We are threatened with invasions,” he said. “How could you expect not to have economic migration?”.....More
