Bill C-32, copyright infringment or civil rights infringement?

Under the new bill Youtube will be rquired to pay into a 'collective licensing fund' or it will be a crime for them to allow anything copyrighted on their site.
I still have not found out who will manage this fund or where the money in it will go.

Like anything the government touches; or better put collects, will find itself in the hands of the big corporations. Who else do you think gets all the contracts from housing for the welfare poor to guns for Harper's militia (Canadian Forces)?

You tube does protect copyright laws, when they get a notice from the owner.
I had some pretty fair videos of the tv show "Austin City Limits" uploaded to You tube last year when they asked me to delete them...that they had a complaint from the company that owned the rights.

According to the new bill C-32 about to be enacted into law by the federal government it will become illegal in Canada to use peer to peer sharing websites anywhere in Canada no matter where they are hosted. The bill will also make it law for the ISP's to monitor and report any such use to the government. It will also become illegal to copy any material from one medium to another, IE: uploading a dvd to your ipod. These are complete invasions of privacy and another example of the government trying to reduce the rights of the people in favor of corporate and commercial entities.

What is your opinion?

Accessing copyrighted material without paying for it is theft. We've had, literally, a free ride for quite some time and I think this was inevitable. Copyrighted material is not just owned by large corporations, many independent artists hold the copyright on their own creative works.

I do have an issue with banning personal use copying. Was this not addressed and settled in the old vinyl/cassette days?

That is an invasion of privacy.

Just FYI - My wife and I have a colletion of aver 1200 DVDs all purchased legally and have copied most of them onto an external hard drive for convenience in selecting and watching movies. This would, under the new legislation cost me up to $5000 per movie if anyone wanted to prosecute.

29.22 (1) It is not an infringement of copyright for an individual to reproduce a work or other subject-matter or any substantial part of a work or other subject-matter if

(a) the copy of the work or other subject-matter from which the reproduction is made is not an infringing copy;

(b) the individual legally obtained the copy of the work or other subject-matter from which the reproduction is made, other than by borrowing it or renting it, and owns or is authorized to use the medium or device on which it is reproduced;

(c) the individual, in order to make the reproduction, did not circumvent, as defined in section 41, a technological protection measure, as defined in that section, or cause one to be circumvented;

(d) the individual does not give the reproduction away; and

(e) the reproduction is used only for private purposes.

That's a lot clearer actually. Monitoring would be an infringement of privacy. I wonder how that would/could conflict with existing Privacy legislation?

This is actually the first I've heard of this bill. But with all the important cotton-picking news it's easy to miss the little things, like pending legislation

I still maintain that downloading unpurchased works is of course stealing. But I do take issue with the attempt to dictate how I would view/enjoy legally purchased materials in my own home. I think enforcement of that would be extremely problematic though.

So far the comittee has only heard from those on the side of passing the bill. They did invite the owner of 'ISO-HUNT' from Vancouver but he is currently involved in a litigation and will almost definitely not want to attend and speak as it could be used against him in court.

If we can get a substantial number of votes on here I will send it to my MP and the comittee. Please vote.

I pay my internet fees( should be enough to pay for what I want to watch), as I used to pay my Cable bill. I got fed up with the over pricing for all the garbage on TV( Garbage I didn't want/ask for)...So I dumped it...( I browse online , I will never buy online..Too many security issues)

Now all I have is Internet..I'll Ditch that too if Big Biz and Big Gov get too Carried away with their crusade to control the Peoples Info and Freedoms ..

"They" always seem to thoroughly ruin everything the people enjoy..for their own interests..$$$$$....

It's a long bill to read and what I did essentially was put a search for the word "Copy" in the link below and finding out after several paragraphs that it said that if you owned the copy, you were exempt, I posted the first paragraph...
