Actually I saw no one,this was a remote camp I was at but I did hit mega airports going up there,a ground blizzard could see you napping in the airport for a week at a time and with a dozen airports it could be 2 weeks before you got to camp.
Never saw one nato troop traveling up there in 4 years.
Not one and I know allmost everyone in the eastern arctic,it may be a big place but the population is small.
I think it should be mandatory for every Canadian to spend at least a month in the arctic,give them a better perspective on life.
I get pissed off when I see ignorant comments from peeps who have gleaned info from their net and then post it as fact.
I'm not an Arctic expert by any means but I know what I saw in my 4 years there.
No nato troops,no nato recruitment posters,just posters on how to make a kill shot on a polar if it attacked you and those were posted in every government institution.

Like I said, my hubby wanted to see an Arctic fox and didn't. so that must mean there aren't any.
Besides, I didn't say that NATO were up there at any particular time, I said NATO has an interest in the Arctic. I have an interest in the Maritimes, too, but that doesn't mean I am there or will be there at some point.

NATO is not up there and if they are they must have blended in pretty good with the environment.:-|
Edmonton is the most northern major population centre in Canada that have over a million people living there which means that people can live in northern climates.
All the government has to do is set up infrastucture in the north and businesses will follow and and then the people will come.

:roll: As near as I can remember, there has been military interests in the Canadian Arctic since before WW2. I think various militaries have also scurried about over there the odd time. Seeing as both the US and Canada are members of NATO, it wouldn't surprise me if there have been NATO personel there sometimes.
So, I stand by my comment that I think if anyone threatened to invade the Arctic, NATO might decide to intervene.
Exactly,we need an infrastructure there.
The french have been exploring and mining it for years.

I like the trees in the background on the first pic,no trees in the high arctic anna,this is what I mean about peeps who havent been there,they take what info they find on the net and run with it thinking its the truth because hey,someone published a paper once and got some more grant money for research.

They arent all that high paying,but things have ground to a halt as far as exploration go's which is strange considering the price of gold right now.
I do love the place just for its sheer size and vastness and loneliness,every trip up there leaves me breathless from about Churchill north anytime I step off a plane or chopper in the many airports you have to hit on the milk run to Rankin inlet,your in a different world.
I have over 5000 pics of stuff I saw up there as im a real cam ***** and I also have 70 video's on youtube of my adventures up there since day one under the username zigmiester.
Flying over the Thelon and seeing the migrating caribou herds is a real mind blower.
Things will pick up next year.

Kakato, those trees could be anywhere between Churchill and Arviat. Also we had a delegation of NATO officers come through Cambridge Bay on a tour of the Arctic in 2007.
