Of course they can't manage their own affairs so we're guilty and expected to pay-up. What are these people doing with the money they already have?

Boy, 10, and woman die in Saskatchewan First Nation fire

A 10-year-old boy and 24-year-old woman died in a house fire on a northern Saskatchewan First Nation.

Patuanak RCMP responded to the home on the English River First Nation, about 500 km northwest of Saskatoon, Sunday at 11 p.m.

Community members and fire crews pulled the pair out of the home and they were taken to a local health centre where they were pronounced dead.

Their identities haven't been released.

Autopsies are scheduled for later this week in Saskatoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

This is the second fatal fire on a Saskatchewan First Nation this year. Last month, Donna Kay, 61, and her 10-year-old grandson Teegan Ahenakew were killed in a house fire on Ahtahkakoop First Nation, which doesn't have a fire department.

The deaths prompted the Assembly of First Nations to call on the federal government to put more funding into fire services on reserves across Canada.

where i live ,it is important for individual communities to lobby for better services,this is the established design.
If individuals of communities do not lobby for better service, or even lobby for modern day services,noone will, including the MP/MLA's who are suppose to be a voice for their constituents.This known apathy results in a old design which places the individuals and their communities in danger.
where i live "volunteer fire departments" exist,
homes have burnt down in my little home community because all or most of the volunteers commute to work,there is noone in my community to immediatly assit during the day,
under our new structure of emergency medical response,people wait 45 minutes for an ambulance to transport you another 45 minutes,our government does not collect waiting and transporting times for small communities,only cities.
any community is wise to lobby for better service,this does not mean they are asking for handouts,just trying to make their community a better place to live

I agree that smaller communities should lobby for more effective emergency services but what you're advocating and what this thread is about, in my opinion, are two very different issues.


The former, people need to take into consideration the lack of emergency services when choosing to live somewhere, (something my hubby and I are now considering as we near retirement), but certainly worthy of attention and discussion.


The latter has been an on-going issue and, until the we, the people, the first nations and government get serious about how funds are allocated to reserves and what kind of accountability is required, nothing has or will change to address these issues. One side says we don't provide enough resources; the other say we do. Somewhere, some time we need to come to a consensus and fix this for the benefit of everyone - receivers and payers. It seems we just can't get our act together and its extremely frustrating to those of us who want to see a reasonable resolution to issue impacting the Reserves. I am of the opinion that Reserves should be banished and First Nations given all the rights of other Canadian Citizens and that the Indian Act should be abolished. But that's me.
