Are there any chain restaurants that provide the likes of "granny's home cookin'?

I used to like the HOME restaurant in Hope until a couple of years ago when I ordered a mushroom burger. It came with an entire can of room temperature mushrooms all over it. The flavour was a big turn-off...briny, canned mushrooms not even rinsed off. Yuck. I asked the server if this was the normal way to serve it and she said "yes." Wasn't a great meal.

yuk -

Getting back to the title about "granny's cooking".

When I was a child in war-torn Hungary, there was no such thing as a wasted part of an animal. (My granny cooked the best meals of my memory and she never wasted anything). That kind of luxury is clearly the legacy of a spoiled, rich country.

I never knew good beef until I came to Canada. Neither have I ever had a single bite of "disgusting" creepy crawler like shrimp. Or slimy oyster. Or crab. Turtle soup? Forget it!

Vanisle, you are disgusted by tongue, because of where it's been? Are you similarly disgusted by eggs, based on where they came from?

Methinks, if not, you should be!
Jack I don't eat oysters. I agree with you on Turtle soup and I wouldn't eat escargot either. Eggs however - I don't eat the shell so it doesn't matter much to me where they come from. Read the labels on all the food you eat because I guarantee you - you also eat them.
My next statement is not directed to you Jack.
Who was the coward who gave me an un-signed RED for supposedly being off topic on this thread December 29th????

Probably NOT the same guy who gave me my "red" on Dec. 30th- for all his other faults atleast he had the guts to identify himself on mine. If it's unsigned V.I. it is DEFINITELY not something you should spend a second worrying about. At least you now know for sure there is one LOSER out there.:lol::lol::lol: Could be worse- could be H.H. wishing you happy new years..............:lol::lol:

You are getting hung up on semantics, if you don't like "granny" substitute "Granny's era". Actually Anna makes perfect sense in post 49- no use me just repeating what she said.
Don't get me wrong - I ate wonderful meals cooked by 'granny era' people, but I don't romanticize the times. Like now, they had good cooks and they had bad cooks.
I've eaten in places all around the world. I've had nasty meals in Paris and awesome meals in England. Best 'basic meat and potatoes'? The pubs in Ireland. the portions weren't massive and the ingredients were fresh and cooked properly.
I'm like Anna - I'll try pretty much anything - but I really don't like mushrooms, although I've come to the point where I find them acceptable raw. but cooked? Can't stand the texture or the smell.Having said that, if they're put in front of me when dining at a function or at someone else's home, I'll eat them without a grimace - it's what my Momma taught me to do!

Definitely reading labels helps. But sometimes they are a bit vague. For instance, a product ingredient list says it might contain beef or pork, but they don't specify what the parts are so you might be getting hide, hair, or hasshole for all you know. lol

It's a plague. I got one, too.

lol Maybe it was Santa. Mix some red in with all the green. It's more Christmassy that way. lol

Maybe if we all went off topic a lot we could pinpoint the chicken by the amount of greens they have. :D

Oh, my. There are so many mushrooms around, DHW. There are some that I will pass on but some are really tasty. Even the lowly bland button mushroom from a can tastes pretty good when sauteed in butter with garlic, lemon juice, and a squirt of soy sauce.

Vanisle said about eggs:

"I don't eat the shell so it doesn't matter much to me where they come from."

Cooking tongue in a slow-cooker or in a pressure cooker will result in delicious meat under a rough outer skin which one discards. Similar to egg shells.

They get a bit squeamish about tongue in these parts. How odd....

Another thing that keeps me from eating some foods, degree of difficulty eating it. For instance, if it's got 400 bones per cubic decimeter (like whole whitefish), I'll pass. Or if there's 5 pounds of bone and a quarter ounce of meat (like pig's knuckles), I'll pass. Fat content makes a big diff with me, too. Unless it's smoked to add flavor and rendered down so there's not a lot of fat left in it, I'll pass.
