OK, let me recite my experience, which in my opinion does take the cake when it comes to stupidity.

When I was employed as a research scientist (that was a long time ago), we had a summer student, he was a Physics major. Somehow we acquired an empty tank, and he decided to make it into an aquarium. I told him to go ahead.

So he filled it up with water, added a few fish and for a few days everything was great. Then the fish died one by one. He bought more fish, the same thing again. Somebody suggested to him that perhaps water may have some algae etc, growing in it, which may be harmful to the fish. So he bought a few snails along with the fish, with the hope that snails will eat up whatever was harming the fish.

In a couple of days all the snails split up and died. All the fish also died. During coffee break we were discussing what may be killing the fish. Somebody again mentioned water; there may be something wrong with the water.

“There is nothing wrong with the water”, the student replied heatedly. “In fact, just to make sure that water is absolutely pure, I filled the tank with distilled water.”

Thud! Only a physicist would make a blunder like that.

That anecdote sounds like someone else's stupidy, I think the gist of the thread was supposed to be about your own stupidity.

OOPS! JLM beat me to the punch, so to speak. Almost my words exactly there, JLM.

No, my drinking days are mostly behind me. I rarely drink these days, except in the summer. I am more prone to think of having the odd vodka and tonic on a hot summer's night as I sit in my sunroom with the last rays of the sun touching my face and the hummers busy at their feeders through the screen window I sit beside.

I'm just in a funnin' mood, is all.

I started a hobbies thread once, but nobody seemed interested, it died after a few posts. I concluded that either nobody at CC but me has any hobbies, or nobody wants to talk about them. Different crowd now, maybe it'd work this time, but I'm not going to start it again. I was left bitter and twisted by that experience...

My experience on message boards generally, not just this one, is that any thread I start goes nowhere. I can post things on threads others have started that provoke lots of conversation, but no thread I've ever started has. So I stopped starting threads and reverted to commenting on subjects others have raised that interest me. A lot of them are about subjects I've raised elsewhere and elsewhen (is that a word? Probably not, but I'm sure you know what I mean.) but it seems that if I start them almost nobody responds. I have in fact several times posted messages here that are word for word identical to posts I've made elsewhere to start a thread. If they're not the OP, interesting conversation ensues, if they are, nobody's interested. I have no idea why that should be so, but that's what I've observed. So despite have a lot on my mind, I very rarely start threads.

I would like to see a thread called "Change the topic anytime you want to". Just open discussion with no fights allowed.

I can't imagine someone with a mind like yours, being ignored. Maybeyour topics were too sensible and interesting, and just didn't makeanyone mad, but made them think, and they got such a headache, theysigned off.

Well Dexter, I'm no expert and I'm rather new at this stuff. One thing I can suggest is to perhaps try phrasing the title like a question. And make sure you involve other people in the title. Quick (extreme) example...instead of "I have a great hobby", you might try something like...

"HEY! ARE YOU KILLING YOURSELF WITH TOO MUCH WORK? Let's Talk Hobbies!"

Note the word "killing" might be a bit strong, but you're competing with a lotta' stuff for attention. Also, the word "you" means you're talking directly to anyone who's reading it. And of course, that little sub-title (Let's Talk Hobbies) will - after getting their attention - tell them what it's all about...thus, the interested folks can and should respond.

A weak or boring title on anything is kind of like meeting someone for the first time. You shuffle up to them, head bowed, no eye contact, and mumble "pleased ta' meetcha'." A strong and attention-getting title is like walking up to a person, smiling, looking them right in the eye, and giving them a nice, firm handshake while saying, "It's a real pleasure to meet you!" with some conviction and strength.

First impressions count. If you blow the first one, there is no second one.

Hope that helps get the ball rolling...and good luck! This is a great way to have some fun and learn lots of things.

Quite so, talloola. If a topic is not controversial, does not rile up some posters, usually very few people are interested in participating.

Writing and posting a post requires active participation. So people are not going to do that unless they have strong feelings about a subject.

No, gist of the thread was to come up with ideas that do not involve Christ or pollution (read the original posting). If one poster (you) can change it to ideas about one’s own stupidity, another (me) can change it to ideas about anybody’s stupidity.

Point well taken but I think it's more amusing when one talks about his own stupidity. Judging another's stupidity can be rather subjective.
