Another B.C. First Nation signs declaration against oil-sands pipeline

The Canadian Press

VANCOUVER — Another First Nation in British Columbia has taken a stand against the construction and upgrading of pipelines that will carry petroleum products from Alberta’s oil sands to the Pacific coast.

During a weekend ceremony, North Vancouver’s Tsleil-Waututh (sail-wah-tooth) Nation added its name to the Save the Fraser Declaration.

Signatories to the document vow they will not allow pipelines carrying oil-sands products to cross their lands, territories or watersheds or the migration routes of Fraser River salmon.

Tsleil-Waututh Chief Justin George says his band has an obligation and birthright to care for the lands and waters in its territory.

The band says more than 100 First Nations have now signed the declaration.

Two major pipeline projects are currently planned for B.C., including Enbridge Inc.’s $5.5-billion Northern Gateway pipeline and Kinder Morgan Canada’s expansion of its Trans Mountain pipeline.

First Perspective

100 First nations? You'd think the gov't and the companies would take that kind of serious.

Although I wonder how many are actually in an affected area.

Good thing SK Heavy Crude isn't the catch phrase of the decade.

Ya I saw that. But do you think they'll go after Sask oil as well?

I was actually just asking for your opinion.

I don't think it really matters so much where it's from, I think Sask will get the same treatment. Maybe not as loud, but I think a Sask oil pipeline will meet heavy resistance along the way. It seems to be the in thing to do.

All the really cool activists are doing it.

SK oil does tie into the Trans Mountain. The Northern gateway, Keystone and Keystone XL already. Maybe nobody gives a **** about oi coming from holes int he ground? Or maybe they all jumped on big bright loud and trendy oil sands bag wagon without doing any form of researching into the scope of the entire Canadian oil industry and how it it is currently impacting their lifestyles positively.

These and many more lines are going through no matter what. These things were planned when you and I were still pushing Tonkas around the sandbox.

Look at it this way. If the Taliban, Pakistan, Ukraine, Iran, Iraq etc etc etc can't stop pipeline with armies AND paper , how the hell will activists do it with just paper?

You make an interesting point.

Do you think it will come to violence, from either side of the equation?

BP backed away but it's up for sale and will still go ahead. 40,000bbl per day. They say "enviro and doesn't meet their standards" but they are paying some bills off (ones for something most have already forgotten) with it.

BP abandons plan to develop Alaska field - The Globe and Mail

]What are the odds that oil sands is the catch phrase of the day because offshore companies like BP or al Qaeda funding (oops almost forgot Taliban) Saudi ARAMCO and their massive ambitions have plenty to gain? What do they have to gain by keeping land locked oil land locked?

Everything?

We need to stop mixing oil with sand and laying wide strips of it all over this land. Ever watch what happens when the rain falls? Cities are particularly bad with the storm sewers going directly to the river.

But how will I get to the next protest if I can't drive?... What about the drive-thru at Starbuck's? Surely you won't include that too?

I see peeps who have spent years paying taxes, car loans, rent, etc, picking up the scruffies (and their dogs) hitchhiking on the highway to Tofino all the time. Later learning they were bent on ending their jobs........

Put it on conveyor belts and call the sand a 'stability agent' and the damage from a 'spill' is as serious as a pile of waterproof sand falling on the ground. Shipped by rail means it has to be shaken out at the end, belts would make it into a string.

Watch this.....if you can't stomach it all, start at about 18:25..........where one of the leaders of the anti-oil movement arrives.....in his BMW sports car. :)
If that is the line inspection vehicle the coring through mountains better be pretty accurate.
