The family of an Air Canada flight attendant who was found still strapped to her seat after surviving the horrific plane crash at LaGuardia Airport last week has spoken out about the extent of her injuries as she recovers in a New York hospital.
Solange Tremblay, a senior flight attendant aboard Air Canada Jazz Flight 8646, suffered numerous injuries after the plane collided with a fire truck after landing at the New York airport’s runway last Sunday night.
The crash killed Air Canada pilots Antoine Forest and Mackenzie Gunther. More than 40 people aboard the plane were hospitalized for treatment with most of them released within hours.
Tremblay was “conscious” and suffered severe injuries when she was thrown 320 feet from the wreckage and “found still strapped in her jump seat lying on the tarmac,” her daughter said in a GoFundMe campaign created for her mother on Friday.
Leg, spine fractures among injuries
“My mother’s injuries include two shattered legs (open fractures) requiring multiple surgeries where metal plates are needed to repair the damage done to her legs,” Sarah Lepine wrote. “She sustained a fractured spine where she continues to wait and see if surgery is required. Furthermore, she requires skin (grafts) to repair the missing flesh she lost on her legs while sliding down the tarmac. She has even received a blood transfusion due to complications from her first surgery.”
“My mom has suffered so much from this event and regrettably her struggles are far from over,” Lepine said, adding that her mom has more surgeries scheduled and will need rehab to learn how to walk again.
“At the moment our greatest fear is the risk of infection which could lead to other horrifying complications if her injuries become infected.
“She is in New York for the foreseeable future for her recovery where she remains in constant fear of sustaining further damages than she has already suffered.”
GoFundMe close to reaching $160,000 goal
Lepine said the money raised from the GoFundMe campaign would help her and her mother’s husband by covering costs as they take time away from work to care for her.
As of Sunday afternoon, over $140,000 had been raised with the campaign just $20,000 away from reaching its fundraising goal.
