Sal- We just ain’t civilized over here. In Europe, many countries, malls, etc are not permitted to open on certain days.
Here we are in the rush for 7/24/365.25 shopping access.
The mad rush to the bottom.
What are the positives, few, negatives outweigh the positives, and then the impact on families.

Not really. When you live in an area where the industry is 24/7 having stores work somewhat close to the same schedule makes sense. It is really only government employees that are on the mon-fri 9-5 thing. Even our bank is open seven days a week and about 12 hrs most days.

To give everybody a day off. If I saw any evidence that the cenotaphs would fill up and the malls would empty just because it was a stat then I could get behind the idea. As it stands I'd prefer a day off in the summer.

I doubt it would fill the cenotaphs. Hasn't worked at the cenotaph near my place.

You have two, apparently separate, disagreements. You see no reason for Remembrance Day to be a stat holiday and if it were you would rather it be in the summer.

The best reason for Remembrance Day to be a stat is because it already has meaning. People observe it and people care about it. No one cares about Victoria Day. We can pick holidays to just give people days off, or we can pick holidays to have meaning (and give people a day off). There is no limitation to the number of stat holidays we have. We could have Remembrance Day and throw in another summer holiday to keep you happy. I don't see why you insist on taking issue with Remembrance Day not being the summer, but let's assume a stat in November somehow deprives the summer of some yet-decided stat and make a trade. Since you like your summer holidays, let's move New Years to August, because who cares what day we change the year over on? Then let's cancel Christmas and make Remembrance Day a stat. That way, you have your summer stat, we have a new stat with national importance and real meaning, and we do away with those close together pointless winter holidays.

Growing up in SK I recall the ceremonies being on the 10th in school.

Same in BC. We all managed.

I stand with the rights of the worker who is not unionized to say no, I am not working on Christmas day or various other Stats, and you can't make me regardless of pressure to do so, because I am a Canadian with human rights and no I don't have to look for a different job

No war but class war!

(and also Great War)

yes gerry it is all about choice and the freedom to choose I agree with you there but some people are less equal than others and I know you get that

but that was never really the issue here...the issue was about freedom to go to the service if one chose to by making Veteran's Day a holiday for all...it doesn't matter to me one way or another since part of what you say I agree with...war is sh*t and those sh*ts who send them to war have to justify sending young lives off to die and it isn't all noble, it isn't at all...it's sometimes a whim of some idiot in charge who simply can't problem solve or lets hundreds die for a yard of ground

there's no glory to a dead man, he is dead and will never enjoy the freedom that we know...only what we recognize as his sacrifice is a glory and a poor tribute to a man who is dead or comes back without his mind intact or half of his body blown away

we agree on more than you might ever know

So if malls must close on stats what about the corner store? Or the restaurants about town? Don't their employees deserve the same treatment? How about the bartender at the legion? Shouldn't he/she be entitled to Rememberance day off? And bus drivers,

And butchers, plumbers, elevator repairmen, hot air balloonists, traffic lights, dogs, the tide...

The best reason for Remembrance Day to be a stat is because it already has meaning. People observe it and people care about it.

Using that criteria, we should make Mothers Day a stat

We could have Remembrance Day and throw in another summer holiday to keep you happy. I don't see why you insist on taking issue with Remembrance Day not being the summer.

I don't care when Remembrance Day is. I just think we should have a long weekend each week in the summertime before we start thinking of more winter stats.

Since you like your summer holidays, let's move New Years to August

Works for me but I don't think you'll have much luck getting the calendars changed.

Then let's cancel Christmas and make Remembrance Day a stat. That way, you have your summer stat, we have a new stat with national importance and real meaning, and we do away with those close together pointless winter holidays.

Again, I don't think you will have much luck changing Christmas. Too many people like it the way it is. There isn't a great demand for a stat in November.

I heard a chap on CTV yesterday making the point that if the kids are in school they will be participating in Remembrance Day ceremonies. If they are not, there's a good chance they will be as he put it 'watching cartoons'. When we are long gone it is they who we hope will carry the torch but how many will bother if they haven't been an active participant whilst young?

When I grew up the services in the school were on the 10th as we had the 11th off.

Just for you, and do remember, google is your friend.

The Pacific Mall, located on Steeles Avenue near Kennedy Road in Markham, is the largest indoor Asian mall in North America and takes pride in being open 365 days a year.

Maybe in your eyes, not in mine.

and everyone has that freedom. If it is that important to you, then you negotiate it when you are hired. If they won't acomadate, then you don't need to accept employment there.

I doubt that very much. Intelligence in a woman is important to me.

Like it or not Goob's, he had a valid point.

Not to me.

Translation, I'm not smart enough to understand.

Maybe you should reread the exchange.

Not worth it.

See above.

Fair enough, but you're missing out on something.

I can live with that.

Well Ger I could say I am not getting into a pissing contest with you.
I could say that you go out of your way to insult people who offered none to you.
I could say that ya really gotta think that something is wrong when someone prides themselves on being an a-sshole.
Well I will not say any of that.
