That is not true Anna; there can be no civilization without government. We have had government since ancient times, when each tribe had a chief and he ruled the tribe, usually with an iron fist.

Then we have had kings, warlords of various kinds, dictatorships, democracies etc. But we do need some kind of government. Without government we will be back to caveman stage (without any money, any defense, any law and order).
So if everything was perfect we'd still need governments? Whatever for? Things would be perfect. Perhaps you don't grasp the concept of perfection. How very sad.
Why would you think that people could never get by without money? People would simply trade or just give to others what they needed and be given stuff in return. We bartered for thousands of years. Defense? If everything was perfect no-one would want to attack anyone else. And if some animal or other attacked, people have brains and use tools. Even monkeys can throw rocks and thump on things with sticks. Law and order? If everything was perfect there's be no-one to accuse of anything.
My own people had several chiefs. No government. The chiefs were simply spokespeople (kind of like messengers). And all through that anarchy people still managed to survive and develop intrusive, expensive, inefficient entities called governments.
Sorry, but your impression that if things were perfect we'd still need government is really kind of funny in an inane way.

Jeffrey Simpson is a Liberal shill....always has been......

As for him, and the rest of you folks out there that are flabbergasted by Harper's statement, here's some advice:

1. Lighten Up.

2. Learn to read English.

he said there were no good taxes, not that taxes are unnecessary, or unreasonable........

Of course a Liberal quails at the thought!

i mean, without good taxes, where would he get the money to hound the average duck hunter out of his sport???

And Good Lord! Without good taxes, how could ione possibly channel tens of millions of bucks to Liberal "entrepreneurs"bag men and gangsters.

Idiotic

To state Simpson is a Liberal shill is nonsense. He writes a fair column and skewers all parties equally. How often do you read The Globe and Mail? I read it 3X week.

Harper was saying what his narrowly focused mind thinks. He hears the word taxes and sees a red flag. Outwardly he is so calm, but inwardly he fumes and these sporadic emotional outbursts are the real guy.

I like your attitude. I just got to thinking yesterday about all the people who scream blue murder when taxes are raised or budget shortfalls are announced (I hate taxes and have always believed the economy should be big enough to support the gov't.......but it ain't going to happen anytime soon), but then I also got to thinking about 700 forest fires raging in B.C. and where is the money coming from to douse them, or if people would rather just say to Hell with them and let them burn. I hate the waste in Gov't., unnecessary travel and scandalous per diem allowances and perks to friends of Gov't. and all the bastards with their snouts in the trough, but I'd still guess that about 80% of Gov't. expenditures is for things we'd scream about if we had to do without. A lot of the problems could be fixed if Gov't.s adopted a policy where one most wasteful bureaucrat was fired every day.
