[You mean more credible than you? Hmmm...is a national news show on a station known for it's journalisitc integrity more credible than an anonymous person on the internet? Tough call there.[/quote]

What I meant is that every time someone does a story about Bountiful they talk to the same people that haven't lived there for several years. When they do interview an actual resident they do it in such a way as to give the idea that anything the person says that goes against the statement of the other source is suspect. The journalists are only intrested in the side of the story that is going to be a sensation. They want to hear that children are being abused and 12 - 15 year old girls are being married to old men. Sex sells now days. Not someone saying they dont want to discuss their private life.

They can't tell the story if there is no story there though, Stinger. Just because you aren't aware of it going on doesn;t mean that it isn't. That's why we have news.

If someone that lives there isn't aware of what is going on how is it that someone who doesn't can know?
Is your neighbor, who's prize rabbit your dog ate, the best person to ask about what happens in your house?

RE: A question about plig

The reports aren't about what they find. It's about what people tell the reporters is going on. If you were to look at the stories that first ever came out they were all about a community were men had more than one wife. Soon that wasn't sensational, so they added in that the women were younger than sixteen, it's all the way down to 12 now. Then they decided the women were all marrying horny old men, now all the children have been abused. The problem is, this all pretty much comes from the same source, and it supposedlly happend in the same time frame. I grew up in this time frame. I wasn't abused, my friends and classmates weren't abused. I didn't see any 12 - 15 year old girls getting married.

I go by first hand experience. I must admit that some reporters have been fair, but others are so far off the mark it's plain laughable. One reporter claimed he discovered that each person in Bountiful had around 30000 dollars worth of weapons and our Creston neighbours could hear us being schooled in warfare night and day.

It was one from quite a few years back. I don't remember his name but I think the paper was called World News, or something like that. There was a couple other stories out at the same time that were just about as far off the mark. That is why most the people in our community don't really trust the press.

What evidence could be given? It is just one word against the other. People will allways believe what they want, and since sex sells that side of the story will be the one people see. They don't want a story that makes them feel good, they want a story that angers them and gives them something to talk about that covers up any problem with their own life.

No problem, Stinger. I know how it is to be from a small town that feels like it's being judged unfairly because of media reports. What I found in the end though was that the media wasn't wrong.

That wasn't about sex or polygamy, but it was a similar situation. A lot of people were involved and even more knew what was going on, but most of us didn't have a clue.
