What's great about the names for medical conditions is that the name is either latin or greek and is a description of the condition. Some diseases are given names by those who "discovered" them, but they also have a medical terminology name which would describe the symptoms or visual condition of a disease, condition, etc.

Pneumo: is pertaining to the lungs.

One issue regarding medicine is that health care professional often dumb down their speak with lay people. There are lots of people that still think you can "swallow your tongue".

When you look at pneumonia, many medical sites refer to it as an infection which isn't really the case. It's an inflammation. An infection can cause the inflammation. I know it may be splitting hairs but it is one reason that confusion exists and, in this case, JLM was somewhat surprised he got pneumonia.

In this case Cannuck is right. Pneumonia can be caused by different things. Pneumonia is a condition not a disease as such. Thirty years ago my doctor warned me that if I didn't stop smoking, I would end up with pneumonia.........I did quit....

O.K. so how is the fact explained that a registered nurse did give me the pneumonia shot and I've since discussed pneumonia shots with several doctors. Can it be true that none of them know what they are talking about? I also googled the pneumonia and got a lengthy description of it there. I first heard of the pneumonia shot from an older neighbour who had the shot and recommended I look into get it. My sister also got the pneumonia shot. Can all these numerous people be wrong?

Getting a shot for pneumonia is much like getting a flu shot. The main benefit is to the bottom line of Big Pharma. In a very few specific cases it will do some good but for the majority it does as much good as a placebo and often will do more harm. DOn't confuse this as being the same as getting a shot for polio or measles.

I'm sure you got a shot against a pre-planned variety of bugs that cause pneumonia We've ended up, through laziness, calling this a "pneumonia shot". There is no specific bug that necessarily causes pneumonia.

This is in the technology section, not the spirituality section. Maybe you could start a thread about your religious beliefs over there.

OK, so far so good, I've also been told by a doctor there is viral pneumonia and bacterial pneumonia. Thanks for clearing things up #Juan. (Cannuck could have done the same thing without injecting his usual infusion of arrogance) :)

Why would you hijack Taxslave's post?

Saying I've never heard of a pneumonia shot is arrogant? That's odd.

On the contrary, he's trying to hijack a scientific discussion with his religious views. There are other places for that

Thank the stars for the internet. Pneumonia isn't caused by a single thing. Often when people are visiting their doctors there is so much information given that not all of it can be absorbed.

Sort of like the flu vaccine. Most people have no interest or knowledge in how many different strains of flu there are or the difference between a cold and a flu or what stains of flu their flu shot is for. If you work or are around people who are traveling internationally a fair bit you are not likely to be protected against the flu you could catch from those people.

Taxslave wrote absolutely NOTHING about religious beliefs in that post. It's just your usual attempt at causing trouble.

Which is why I mentioned that JLM (or anybody for that matter) get things written down. It's easier to go through it or even get somebody else to go through it later than try and absorb it all when you're standing in front of the doctor.

It's best to not get a shot and let your body fall victim to bacteria, viruses and fungi normally easily handled by our immune systems.

No, it's the rest of sh*t that you said! You don't catch on too fast.

I think I've been polite and answers any questions you have asked. Is there something specific I've said or are you just upset that I was right?

I don't think when you are in a line with 20 people in it waiting for a shot, the nurse is liable to be writing anything down.:)

Don't you have a sewer pipe to clean or something? Adults are carrying on an intelligent conversation here.

No I'm off today so lots of time to discus these scientific issues. I might even pop over to the spirituality section and discuss the church of alternative medicine if I feel so inclined.

Since he can't back up any of his alternative medicine theology with science, what would you call it?

Go to Safeway or any other pharmacy that does vaccinations. They are more than willing to spend the time with you.

yeah, but don't get it written down by the doctor. Their short hand is not meant for reading.

Writting down what's said is a really good way to get it cemented into your memory. Also offers the opportunity to get clarification.

Maybe Dr. offices should hand out little pads of paper and pencils to it's patients. Might save everyone alot of time.
