Wasn`t there a major earthquake just yesterday in the Americas or did I just dream that event?

I do recall CBC bringing up the topic between breaks in `The Games` and CNN, god love thier war-mongering hearts, putting in a full 24 hours covering the thing...mostly with cameras pointed towards the beaches in Hawaii in the event some REal breaking news occured.

Today, not a ****ing lick of news or follow-up on the quake..ok, the scattered `Chile Desk` from CNN but thats about it.

What a bunch of two-faced people we be in this regards.8O

I believe when there is anything of "earth shattering" importance, you merely have to turn to CNN or click on CNN and you can get all the details you want so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Temper Dysregulation Disorder with Dysphoria. It's the new term for what we used to call a temper tantrum.

The problem is Canadians enjoyed the Olympics and the country collectively lifted its spirits. That is not the kind of thing that makes someone who wishes death and destruction on Canadians and Americans very happy.

I am sure CNN was greatly disappointed when they couldn't show massive waves wiping out Hawaii.

I just heard that NASA announced that the rotation of the earth sped up following the earthquake, due to a shift in mass because of the size of the quake. They say that the days will be 1.3 microseconds shorter...

8O....Goodness Gracious!!
Chile`s earthquake has suddenly (the last couple of days) become a topic of concern for CBC, CTV and other Canadian media. Lead story in most cases!!

Yep, it's getting downright scary- heard tonight it's even shortened the length of the day. How are you going to manage that quandary, take it off sleep time, work time or leisure time?

Excuse us infidels for enjoying a once in a lifetime event and not devoting our full attention to unchangeable bad news. I'm sure the Chileans must be very angry we even played a gold medal game. Surely Crosby should've been sitting in front of a television with a long face instead of going on with his own life.

8.8. And that’s not an Olympics score

By Jodi A. Shaw
For the last week, Canadians have been shaking with excitement over Canada’s triumphs in the Olympics in Vancouver. And over the past few days, I’ve found it difficult to have a conversation with anyone that doesn’t involve talking about hockey. Today at the grocery store a complete stranger cornered me in the produce section to share excitement about Canada’s gold medal win in hockey. “We won!” Her grin made me pretty uncomfortable.

“Horrible news about Chile,” I said, “just awful.” Obviously, I’m not much of a hockey fan. She hadn’t heard a thing about Chile.

On Saturday morning, an 8.8-magnitude earthquake shook central Chile causing mass devastation. An incredible 90 aftershocks, all of magnitude five or higher, have continued the devastation with over 700 dead (and the number continues to rise) and an estimated 1.5 million people affected by the quake. Less than two months after the earthquake that devastated Haiti, it’s like deja vu as I sit in my living room watching images on the news of people digging through the ruins of collapsed buildings in search of survivors. And yet I have to channel surf relentlessly to find a station with coverage of the disaster in Chile, as the Olympics hog the airwaves.

Maybe I don’t get it because I’ve never been a huge sports enthusiast: I don’t have a team or own a jersey, I’m not competitive by nature, and I can’t name name any players other than Todd Bertuzzi and Steve Moore (and that only because I read about them on CBC.ca).

I didn’t watch any Olympic events, not because I am boycotting, though I was tempted to, but because I’ve got things to do, and simply can’t devote hours of my day to curling or speed skating. My Olympic jones has largely been satisfied by reading Facebook status updates. It’s nice to see Canadians uniting and being proud of their country and its athletes, and I appreciate the history of the Olympics, but I don’t quite understand the level of emotional involvement and time commitment so many people are willing to put forth. And I certainly don’t get why Olympic coverage trumps world coverage.

“The competition is exhilarating,” a co-worker told me.

Maybe so, but there’s nothing exhilarating about a country devastated by an earthquake competing for news coverage, and losing to the Olympics.

The big story in Canada for the last three weeks was the Olympics. We last had the Olympics in this country in 1988, in Calgary. I watched the games as much as I could but I was aware of the earthquake in Chile. I knew our country was going to help and I will definitely contribute money to help Chile. I definitely will not feel guilty for watching our Olympics.
We are getting a little jaded by news of natural disasters. Initial reports from Chile said dozens were killed. More recent reports told of deaths in the thousands. A few months earlier an earthquake in Haiti had killed 200,000. I don't know what the final death count will be in Chile but that country was a lot better prepared than Haiti.

Should bad news take preference over good news? I don't think so, 90% of the news is generally bad and there is very little we can do about most of it, so why wallow in it?

Some people live such miserable lives that they try and bring other people down to their level....

Well, we were inundated with news about the Haiti quake for a month (and many of us did what we reasonably could to help alleviate the situation) and maybe most people just aren't quite ready yet to wallow in another quake for any length of time.
