The 3 premiers of Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick are meeting in Ontario for high-level discussions in order to draft a Wish List for Mr Trudeau. It will look something like this:

"Give me money."

That is their best idea so far.

Oh wait, they decided to develop nuclear reactors. By which they mean grant contracts to certain producers. They probably already have them lined up.

I can't offhand think of a more sensible plan than to have Doug Ford in charge of distributing reactors around Ontario.

Our history with nuclear energy should have made this whole idea a non-issue but apparently Higgs thinks it's great.

One would think that with the last bout of nukes in Ontariowe and Fukushima disaster people would have learned their lesson about this dirty unsafe power.

No imminent plans for Sask. small modular nuclear reactors: Duncan

The goal is to help provide emission-free power in the move away from fossil fuel-burning electricity. However, the minister responsible for SaskPower said Saskatchewan still has a lot to learn about the technology before making concrete plans.
“An SMR is not imminent for Saskatchewan, but I would say it is probably within the middle part of the next decade we would likely see the first SMR in North American south of the border,” Dustin Duncan said.

Possible locations for SMRs in Saskatchewan could be the southeast corner around Estevan or Coronach and the north.
Ducan said this is due to an abundance of transmission infrastructure attached to coal plants that will be decommissioned in the south, and electricity needs in the north due to many homes using it for heating.
However, the federal process to approve a potential nuclear site is lengthy.
“Obviously New Brunswick and Ontario are ahead of Saskatchewan because they already have nuclear power sites; they’re already licensed to host a nuclear site,” Duncan said.

Despite Saskatchewan eyeing a major shift in baseload power generation, Duncan said he does not believe this is a signal the carbon tax is changing behaviour.
“When you look at individuals that are paying the carbon tax, again ss I’ve argued in the past, certainly we don’t think it’s going to see a change in behaviour,” Duncan said.
“That being said, as a utility we know we have large-scale generation that needs to be replaced. Certainly, coal beyond 2030 without carbon capture is not going to be allowed in Canada, but even natural gas has additional costs attached to it through a carbon tax.”
A decision on whether or not to expand carbon capture technology to extend the life of the coal-fired Shand Power station is still years away.
SaskPower previously paused development of a new natural gas power station near Moose Jaw due to changing carbon tax regulations. The Crown utility ultimately decided to move ahead despite an extra $350 million in estimated costs.

It is because of posters like Hoid that Nuclear is starting to look attractive, by phasing out of Coal even with Carbon Capture, or not accepting and penalizing NG, it only makes sense to turn towards Uranium.

Nobody asked Ontario if we wanted stupid windmills either but we got 'em. Even though we have the highest generating nuclear power plant in the world, plus 2 more NPPs and a decent hydroelectric capacity.

Over the last 4 days, Ontario's 4400MW of installed wind capacity haven't managed to generate much more than 1300 MW. In fact, from Ontario's energy mix, here's how great those "renewables" are doing This is what they're putting out as of 12:45 PM today. Wind- 636 MW, Solar-145MW, biofuel, 121 MW. Gas alone is generating 2402 MW of power. Meanwhile hydro is cranking out 4500 MW and nuclear is putting out 11000 MW.

Let's take a little closer look at the numbers. Ontario has 4800MW of installed wind capacity, yet it's only generating 636MW right now. It also has 2300MW of installed solar capacity, only generating 145 MW right now. That 145 MW is the highest output from solar over the last 4 days. Over the same 4 day period wind power hasn't even cracked 1300 MW. If Ontario were running solely on sunshine and unicorn farts, we'd be so f*cked right now.


Update: here are the generation totals as of 1:45 PM today. Wind-669MW, solar 161MW, bio-fuel- 120MW. But gas is up to 2658MW. Nuclear, hydro and natgas are providing power to the equivalent of 13.5 million homes. Wind, solar and bio-fuels are supplying the equivalent of just 700,000 homes.

Germany has the same issues. Wind gets closest to it full potential only 15% of operating time. Thank Gott for Neo-Soviet Oligarch gas.
