Germany 7-1 Curaçao

NRG Stadium, Houston

The smallest nation in the tournament, with a population of 156,000, were ruthlessly put to the sword by mighty five-time winners Germany - but they and their fans will remember for years the moment they scored an equaliser

Spain 0-0 Cape Verde

Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta
Attendance: 67,640

Mighty Spain, the World Cup favourites, were held to a shock draw by tiny Cape Verde, one of the world's smallest countries, who will remember this result for decades to come.

The Republic of Cape Verde is the same size in land area as the English county of Suffolk.

Small Nation with a Big Heart

Remarkable scenes at the end as a country with the same land area as Suffolk and with a population of 491,000 held mighty European Champions Spain to a 0-0 draw in their first ever World Cup game. Cape Verde, the third-smallest country to ever play in the World Cup, got a point against mighty Spain.

This is what the biggest tournament in the world's most popular team sport can do to entire nations: Just 90 minutes of football can lift an entire nation and give it an immense feel-good factor...

England given warm welcome as they arrive at their base in Kansas City, Missouri

Young American England fans welcome the Three Lions to their city

Young American England fans welcome the England team as they arrive at their base in Kansas City.

England were given a warm welcome by the good folk of Kansas City as they arrived in town on Saturday.

American fans of England were especially keen to give their favourite team a warm welcome.

England, the third-favourites to win the tournament after Spain and France, start their campaign for a second gold star on their chests against Croatia on Wednesday.

This particular young American England fan was delighted when he found out from his parents that his heroes were coming to Kansas City for the World Cup so he and his family travelled all the way from Florida to see them...

Games coming in thick and fast. There's still a long way to go. 48 teams - but only one winner.

This England squad is crazy

This England squad is crazy: not only for the players that Thomas Tuchel has left out but also for its sheer strength.

England can, and maybe should, win this World Cup
