Lucas Brenton in action against the Moose on October 6th.

The noon start time (moved up from 2:00 p.m. on the original schedule) is to accommodate hordes of school children. Apparently, a lot of schools have registered already. I am not sure if I will brave it and book off an afternoon, or tune in to CWTV.

These teams were in opposite divisions last year, so they only played once, that in the Town of Bedrock. The Dinos dominated the series.

Bedrock U lost three players to each of the NCAA and the minor pros, and two more to Europe. On paper, the replacements were not as good. However, their pre-season record was stellar (they went a cumulative 4-1-1 against Sask, MRU, and UBC). In the regular season thus far, they hammered Regina then split with MRU. They have six players at a point-per-game or better already.

The Bisons have shown steady progress throughout the pre-season. They really beefed up their blueline from a year ago, with just two returning d-men. A focussed defensive system could yield dividends. They were well-organized when they faced a stacked Manitoba Moose line-up. However, they did allow the Banjo-Cats to hang in there last weekend, rather than bury them.

The story at GoBisons.ca is on new defenceman Lucas Brenton:
"He was a big, strong guy and you could see that he loved the game and loved to compete. I thought there was a lot to work with. Fortunately for the both of us we both decided to go to Moose Jaw the following year and I got to work with him as a young 17-year-old in the COVID year in the hub," recalled Burnett. ...

"It was a lot to do with Gord. I was in the states last year playing professional hockey. I had a big decision to make coming into this year. It was either go back and forfeit some of the school money I made playing in the Western Hockey League, or come and get my degree and set up my future and my life and mature a little bit. I decided to go down that route. I think it was a really good decision," Brenton said. ...

"Last year our second unit had one goal. We have two already this year. Having two options that can hurt you on the power play is critical to success. Special teams is such a big factor in this league."

This is the first Bison action against a top-tier CW opponent. Thus far it has been Regina, Lakehead (of the OUA), Manitoba Moose (AHL), and NCAA teams. So this series is a real measuring stick.

Will Fred Flintstone be rooting for Bedrock U, or the reps of the Buffalo Lodge?

These teams have played same opponents so far, both having swept Holy Trinity, and the T-irds splitting with MacEwan, who were then swept by the Evil Monkeys. That opposition is so-so, so these teams remain difficult to rank.

The Apes were decimated by NCAA recruiting (losing 7 players that direction), and another 5 headed to Europe. In a bit of a peculiarity, four four weeks the Apes had a relatively poor performance on Friday night, only to bounce back with a better performance on Saturday. This trend was reversed last weekend against MacEwan. They had an 8-2 loss to MRU and an 8-1 loss to Sask in pre-season. The T-irds were hard to guage because in pre-season they played Trinity and Simon Fraser, before a split with Calgary.

This home-and-home series starts in Edmontown on Friday, and concludes in Cowtown on Saturday. These teams played in the pre-season, with the Bluegars winning by scores of 5-2 and 7-4. The Family Guys are likely happy with their 1-2-1 opening. It leaves them ahead of Holy Trinity, which is all they have to do in order to make the playoffs. The Bluegars are a consistent .500 against the upper echelons of the CW, making them once again a solid contender. Bluegar Connor Bouchard was MRU Athlete of the Week, and Family Guy goaltender Eric Ward was Mac U’s 1st star of the week.

The defending champs against the defending cellar dwellers. I’m guessing that my viewing of this series will be confined to the endings, owing to the games starting at 9:00 CDT. Holy Trinity usually has one decent performance per weekend, so you never know when an upset might happen. Since entering the league, the Banjo-Mutts hold an 11-1 lead in this rivalry.

October 17, 2025: BISONS “GOALIED” IN HOME OPENER

CALGARY DINOSAURS 4
MANITOBA BISONS 0

Links:
➤ Summary: Game Centre : Game Report
➤ UofC: Stankowski’s shutout leads Dinos past Bisons (with boxscore)
➤ UofM: Stankowski’s shutout leads Dinos over the Bisons 4-0 (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Calg: H. Pakkala (05:55 2nd) , C. Horning (17:03 2nd) , J. Hungle (06:27 3rd) , A. Kydd (18:42 3rd)
Man: none
Goal: Calg: Stankowski (32 shots, 32 saves), Man: Holt (21 shots, 18 saves)

The noon start and the prospect of an arena jammed with elementary school students made me choose to watch at home on CWTV. Did those kids ever sing the national anthem! They really belted out “True North” as if they were watching the Jets.

I don’t usually see the Bison broadcasts because I am at the game. I must say they did a pretty good job, and better than they used to have. Saturday’s rematch is being streamed by CBC, including their YouTube channel. With the Bisons in their new bright yellow, and the Dinos in their bright red, this was a very colourful game.

The Bisons had their usual IG line-up picture, but Bedrock U did not. Also, whereas LeagueStat listed only the players who dressed, the Hockey Tech live link listed everybody. So no Bedrock U alignment today.

The stories of this game were Carl Stankowski’s goaltending, the Bison 0-for-7 powerplay, and a general inability on the part of the Bisons to cash in on their numerous chances. The shots really reflected the ebb-and-flow of this game. The Dinos outshot the Bisons 9-5 in a scoreless 1st period. It was only when the Bisons started piling on the shots that the Dinos started scoring. The Bisons outshot the Dinos 14-7 in the 2nd period, and 13-6 in the 3rd.

I am looking forward to Saturday afternoon’s rematch.

Alta: T. Laventure (04:46 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Mirwald (32 shots, 31 saves), Alta: Kruger (30 shots, 25 saves)

I saw a good amount of this game, albeit with one screen on this game, one on MRU v Mac, one on the Blue Jays, and one on Friday night football. Based on what I saw through all that fog, this was actually not as one-sided as the score might suggest. An early 2nd period goal gave the T-irds a lead. But it was a 3-goals-in-3-minutes outburst that put this one away. The Evil Monkeys seem to have one dud game per weekend, so don’t be shocked if they rebound on Saturday.

The Family Guys are all Giggity-Giggity tonight. This was a solid win over the Bluegars, and raises them to 2-3-0. The wins are over UBC and now the MRU. So well-done.

Goal: Sask: Kooy (26 shots, 24 saves), TWU: Audet (73 shots, 68 saves)

Yes, Raphael Audet faced 73 shots in Holy Trinity’s goal. Yet they darn near pulled off a comeback. The Banjo-Mutts held leads of 3-0 and 4-1. But those plucky Spartans had a lot of desire. They seem to always have one decent performance per weekend. IF they surrender another 73 shots on Saturday, it will be ugly.

October 18, 2025: BISON COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

CALGARY DINOSAURS 5
MANITOBA BISONS 4

Links:
➤ Summary: Game Centre : Game Report
➤ UofC: Hot start continues for Dinos men's hockey with sweep of Manitoba (with boxscore)
➤ UofM: Herd's comeback falls short against Dinos 5-4 (with boxscore)

Quick Summary
Calg: C. Horning (11:44 1st) , D. Fry (02:51 2nd) , S. Strange (19:54 2nd) , L. Hauer (01:23 3rd) , A. Kydd (17:29 3rd)
Man: L. Brennan (03:35 2nd) , L. Brennan (04:48 3rd) , S. Borschowa (06:44 3rd) , D. Pasternak (11:02 3rd)
Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (30 shots, 26 saves), Man: Holt (39 shots, 34 saves)

In a scheduling twist, Bedrock’s football team was playing the Bisons next door at 1:00 p.m. whilst this one started at 2:00 p.m. So I followed along on my cell phone. In the football game, the Bisons came back from down 20-10 to take the lead, and almost blew it. A game-tying field goal was missed by the Dinos to finish the game 33-31. Meanwhile, Maya Turner (girl kicker) wasn’t missing anything for The Herd.

Meanwhile, at the Wayne Fleming Arena, the Bisons were down 4-1 in the 3rd period before mounting a rally to tie the game. Rookie Lucas Brennan ended 83+ minutes of shutout hockey to score on a penalty shot to make it 2-1. He then added a PP goal in the 3rd to make it 4-2. Sam Borschawa and Dawson Pasternak notched their first of the season and we were all tied up.

However, the Bisons have developed a tendency to run around in their own end, and in such situations Braden Holt is not the steadying-influence type of goaltender.

All-in-all, the Bisons were unlucky to come away pointless on the weekend. They have certainly improved over last year. Next week’s home series against MRU will show if they have turned the corner. The Dinos are now 5-1-0 and the Bisons fall to 2-2-0.

Here’s how the teams lined up:

MANITOBA

Goal: UBC: Schwebius (22 shots, 20 saves), Alta: Sim (L) (13 shots, 10 saves), Barwick (21 shots, 19 saves)

Far from bouncing back as has been the Evil Monkeys’ methodology this year, they were worse on Saturday than on Friday. Their goaltending was far from stellar, but they only mustered 22 shots of their own. The T-irds thus take over 1st place in the west division, at 5-1-0 whilst the Apes fall to 4-2-0.

Goal: MacU: Onyskiw (46 shots, 41 saves), MRU: Sims (21 shots, 18 saves)

The Bluegars were thoroughly dominating play in this one. However, their 4-1 lead after two periods quickly shrunk to a one-goal lead early in the 3rd. But The Family Guys never got any better. The Bluegars are now 3-3-0, and MacU is 2-3-1.

Holy Trinity was completely outclassed in this one. Friday was certainly their game-of-the-weekend. They gave up 133 shots on the weekend. This series is not really a measuring stick for the Banjo-Mutts.

The Bluegars have had some really good games, but overall they are doing the 50/50 thing. Three weekends, three splits (against Sask, Calgary, and MacEwan).

Meanwhile, the Bisons swept Regina but were swept by Calgary. However, the Bison games against Bedrock U were very close and they likely deserved some points. It could be that this series will go a long way to determining which one of these teams will be in the playoffs.

GoBisons.ca has a god profile story on the signing of Blake Swetlikoff.
It’s not often you get a request from a seasoned pro and WHL veteran of 233 games to join your roster less than a month before school starts, but rest assured, the call was music to men's hockey head coach Gordon Burnett’s ears.

Chantz Petruic was amongst the CW Players of the Week, and hisn story is linked from the Sask team website.

This Battle of Banjoland has not had much lustre in recent years. The Banjo-Mutts seems to have no problem with the Banjo-Cats. This home-and-home starts in Saskatown on Friday and then shifts to Regina on Saturday. I am not anticipating an upset here. The Mutts have won the last 14 games against the Cats. However, that loss was also preceded by 14 straight wins. So is there a pattern here?

The Family Guys have had a solid start, with splits against UBC and MRU, and a point against Alberta. Holy Trinity is being consistently outclassed, but usually keeps things close once per weekend.

This home-and-home will likely draw the most attention nation-wide. This is the only meeting of the season for this traditional rivals. The Evil Monkeys are a little wonky this year. They swept Holy Trinity and MacEwan and were swept aside rather easily by UBC. Bedrock U hammered Regina, split with MRU, and swept Manitoba in tight games.

In off-ice news, the Clare Drake Arena is closing next year for renos. But the Monkeys and Fat Pandas are off to a rink in Nisku, Alberta. That’s an industrial park with 30 residents and an 1,800 seat arena.

October 24, 2025: BISONS TRAMPLE BLUEGARS, JUMP INTO 3RD

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS 2
MANITOBA BISONS 4

Links:
➤ Summary: Game Centre : Game Report
➤ MRU: Team Website
➤ UofM: Team Website

Quick Summary
MRU: K. Walker (17:22 1st) , S. Moe (17:37 3rd)
Man: J. Hooker (09:15 1st) , S. Bruce (01:02 2nd) , L. Brennan (15:36 3rd) , J. Hooker (18:55 3rd)
Goal: MRU: Sims (18 shots, 15 saves), Holt (36 shots, 34 saves)

This was a big one for The Herd. They are now 3-2-0, and the Bluegars are 3-4-0. This means that the Bisons are currently in the top three, and the Bluegars sit 4th and out of the playoffs. Of course, the playoffs are a long way off still.

Here’s how they lined up:

MANITOBA BISONS
Goal:
31 Holt (34 Plowman)

Defence:
27 Turner - 8 Toth
13 Brenton - 22 Willick
4 Bonni - 3 Borschowa

Forwards:
18 Hooker - 21 Pasternak - 17 Bruce
9 Alarie - 14 Swetlikoff - 20 Zaplitny
23 Lane - 19 Arpin - 24 Brennan
16 Joss - 29 King - 28 Behun

Scratches:
G: Kieper
D: 5 Bielik - 6 Coyle
F: 10 Bouvier - 11 Purdom - 12 Trimble - 25 Dekay - 26 Boucher

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS
Goal:
35 Sims (33 Buenaventura)

Defence:
2 Walker - 6 Olafson
5 Ladyman - 25 Aquilon
27 Feist - 10 Komzak

Forwards:
23 Tarzwell - 16 Lies - 20 Zandee
12 Bouchard - 14 Wiens - 9 Patton
17 Singleton - 8 Moe - 28 Watterodt
11 Martens - 26 Poffenroth - 19 Milliken

Scratches:
G: 31 Farkas
D: 4 Oates - 21 Izyk - 22 Nolan
F: 7 Fromm-Delorme - 18 Stevenson - 24 Rowland

The flow of this game was odd. In the 1st period, the shots favoured MRU 15-7, but it ended 1-1. In the 2nd period, MRU outshot the Bisons 16-4, but the Bisons took a 2-1 lead. But in the 3rd period, the Bisons outshot MRU 8-5 and each team had one goal before the Bisons registered an empty-netter. It was like a rope-a-dope on ice. MRU had nothing left bin the 3rd and seldom threatened to tie the game.

The Bluegar approach in the first two periods was to shoot from everywhere. Pucks were bouncing off the glass behind the Bison goal. It was like watching a team of 15 year olds (who have just mastered the art of raising the puck) in pre-game warm-ups. Meanwhile, the Bisons used passing plays in a more-or-less normal fashion to set good chances.

In the 1st period, Captain Hooker opened scoring on a slot shot where no Bluegar played the body, allowing him to score. The score was levelled when Captain Kyle Walker blasted one from the blueline, one occasion where a high shot found the top shelf instead of the glass.

The only goal in the 2nd period came from a Bluegar turnover after one minute, Caden Zaplitny pounced on it and fed Skyler Bruce. The Bisons never looked back. Although the Bluegars rang up the shot clock, there were not the mass scrambles and just one (foiled) breakaway.

The 3rd saw rookie Lucas Brennan score his 3rd of the season, following which the Bisons shut down the Bluegars. Mounting a 3rd period comeback with 5 shots is not likely to work. The Bluegars did mange to pull within one, after a bad Bison turnover prevented a d-zone exit and eventually a bouncing puck went off several body parts before Spencer Moe made it 3-2. Captain Hooker’s 150’ ENG sealed the deal.

Goal: Calg: Tetachuk (L) (14 shots, 9 saves), Stankowski (9 shots, 8 saves), Alta: Kruger (42 shots, 40 saves)

The Evil Monkeys scored 5 goals on 14 shots in 14 minutes to chase Carl Tetachuk from Bedrock U’s goal. By the end of the period, it was still 5-0 and the Monkeys held a 17-10 lead in shots. Then the Dinos changed things dramatically in the 2nd period, outshooting the Apes 19-1! But it was still a 5-1 game. The 3rd period was basically playing-out-the-string. This was a key win for the Chimps, as both sides are now 5-2-0.

Goal: TWU: Audet (42 shots, 37 saves), MacU: Ward (22 shots, 21 saves)

Holy Trinity scored first, but that was it. I didn’t see any of it, but the stats look like a domination by The Family Guys. MacU is now 3-3-1.

Goal: Reg: Maric (40 shots, 32 saves), Sask: Thomson (21 shots, 20 saves)

I also did not see this game. The Banjo-Cats seemed to have some decent recruits, to at least show some improvement over a year ago. Instead, they have hits the skids. The scene shifts to Regina for Saturday’s rematch.

Still no posts from Regina. Maybe they have given up on their Banjo-Cats.
