July 23, 2025: RANDOM STUFF & LINKS FROM BANJO-LAND

This isn't exactly Bison news, but the MJHL put up an Instagram post which says their league had 65+ grads in USports in 2024-25. Too bad so few stories are being posted across the various leagues.

Links:
➤ Instagram: Oct 21/24
➤ MJHL: Player Advancements (dormant post-2024-25)

This blog is a local Winnipeg blog supported by a weekly radio show at UMFM. Their stories touch on a variety of local and non-local things, like the Jets signing Gabe Villardi, and this story on U-Hockey. It brings up some interesting conjecture. Their suggestions, in point form, are:

1. Remove The Paywall
2. Give Me Engaging Stories
3. Collaborate With Others
4. Go Get Big Names
5. Live Is Free; Replays Are Not

I find CWTV to be a good value, but free access would certainly open it up to new and occasional fans. Is the money being used to create better broadcasts? It seems like it has. Alberta, Sask, UBC, and Calgary are very good and the others have gotten better.

I do think that the teams could better distribute stories and player profiles. Out of 26 players, there must be several "human interest" style stories. Social media which is sparse on content and big on pictures is fine, but linking those to proper stories and links to stats etc. would be more beneficial.

I also remember, back in the day, when local TV stations would tape a game on Friday night, and broadcast it on Saturday afternoon. In the CW, that re-broadcast could be used as a commercial for the Saturday night re-match.

This is the Mutts' press release of a signing previously listed elsewhere. Thornton's past pro experience makes him a prime recruit, no doubt.

The Banjo-Cats have three stories posted, one about each of three new recruits already listed elsewhere. These three players are one of each: a goalie, a d-man, and a forward. Borsos (the goalie) is from Notre Dame of the SJHL. Jasper (the forward) played NCAA Division 3 last year, after playing for Steinbach of the MJHL. Gallant (the d-man) has WHL and AJHL experience.

August 3, 2025: BISONS LAND A 10TH RECRUIT

ETHAN DEKAY - F - Weyburn (SJHL)/Okotoks (BCHL)

Here we have a small-sized forward (5'10" 176 lbs), who had committed to Michigan Tech. He is from London, Ontario, but played for four teams across the AJHL, BCHL, and NAHL before settling down with the Weyburn Red Wings (SJHL). At some point, he received a scholarship offer from the Michigan Tech Huskies. Last year, in 51 games his stats were 24-34-58. The linked stories refer to injury and suspension issues which limited his ice time, however no detail was available. This gives the Bisons four forwards, four defencemen, and two goaltenders in their recruiting class.

August 4, 2025: A BISON OR A MOOSE?

LUCAS BRENTON - D - Indy Fuel (ECHL)

If the LOI registry is correct, the Bisons have a great addition. However, Elite Prospects has Lucas Brenton listed as a Manitoba Moose, not a Manitoba Bison. At 6'4" & 212 lbs, and with four full seasons with Moose Jaw in the WHL, and a full season with Indy in the ECHL, this would be quite an addition for the Bisons. His WHL offensive numbers aren't much (53 points in 230 games) but he is a highly touted defensive defenceman. There are a host of stories out there, but none about a signing by the Manitoba Moose.

MacEwan has listed a 2025-26 roster page, but this looks to be "in progress" when compared with the previous listings at Elite Prospects. I will do a pre-season preview once we have something firm. Here is the combined list:

August 5, 2025: T-IRDS ANNOUNCE RECRUITING CLASS

The T-irds are the first team to confirm a complete recruiting class. They previously announced one on their website (Jace Weir) and two more were reported by Elite Prospects. This announcement adds four more. They do not have a Roster Page uploaded for 2025-26 yet. Here's a thumbnail sketch:

Jace Weir (D) - Red Deer Rebels (WHL) - played whole junior career there;
Reilly KIotai (F) - Melfort Mustangs (SJHL) - he was the championship team's leading scorer;
Jaxson Ruthven (F) - Weyburn Red Wings (SJHL) - he finished just behind Bison recruit Ethan DeKay in team scoring (58 to 52 points);
Wolfgang Govedaris (D) - Northern Michigan Wildcats (NCAA) - previously played in the OJHL and NAHL;
Quinn Disher (F) - Michigan Tech Huskies (NCAA) - also played for four teams in the BCHL and one in the NAHL;
Nathan Sullivan (F) - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institution Engineers (NCAA) - previously played for the Camrose Kodiaks (AJHL);
Nick Jones (G) - Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL) - he previously played for the Brandon Wheat Kings, where his stats weren't great, and is slated to be UBC's #3 goaltender.

This class is evidence that a lot of players are moving north, as Major Junior grads are moving south.

August 10, 2025: OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASES FROM MANITOBA AND MACEWAN

On August 8, 2025, there were three press releases at GoBisons.ca about the new recruits. The first story addresses Lucas Brennan (former MJHL MVP and scoring champion, and Bemidji State recruit) and Matthew Kieper (former SJHL MVP and WHL goaltender). The second story is on Samuel Borschowa, a WHL defenceman. The third one deals with goaltender Cole Plowman (coming from Alaska via Steinbach) and defenceman Zach Turner (a Brandon Wheat King who finished in Melfort last year).

The MJHL also has an Advancements Notice story on Miguel Bouvier. This story stresses Bouvier's all-star season where he led the league in goals. Each story had a picture, so the photo gallery expands significantly.

We await team releases on Kaycee Coyle, Tanner Willick, Ethan DeKay, Aidan Litke, Joel Purdom, and Lucas Brenton.

The RSEQ started a Division 2 competition three seasons ago. They had just three teams for two seasons (UQAC, ETS, and Concordia II). Last season UQO made it a four-team competition.

Two years ago, I was enthused that CMRSJ was coming back. But they just had an exhibition game and seem to be a rec league team.

Bishop's plays in the AAU but have a previously-noted exhibition game pending against ETS. They do have a women's Division 1 team, as do Laval and Montreal. Their website is down, so who knows what they are doing.

Back in 2018-19, UQAM made headlines when the Molson family put a $1 million donation to a new program. It was then put on ice during Covid, and my internet search shows nothing new since 2022. It would be nice to see them at least play in Division 2.

Of note, ETS is a member of the RSEQ but not a member of USports. They were able to enter the unofficial men's rugby competition and shocked the nation by winning the title. Usually UVic and UBC deominate the rest of Canada in rugby.

Concordia II seem to have their own logo, apart from the official one.

August 15, 2025: CWTV, A NEW LOGO, AND A NEW RECRUIT

The Banjo-Cats have a new logo, and are incorporating the Little Lambs (the football team) into website and university branding.

Links:
➤ Regina: New Look. Same Grit.

When it comes to announcing CWTV, the CW website people aren't pushing sales like they used to. Last year, I never saw the early bird announcement. This year, I looked for it and found it, but not at the CW website. just at the CWTV website. They used to put out a story on each team website, and each team put it in with the links for each sport.

All-Access Pass: $99.99 (Regular Price: $119.99)
Regular Season Sport Pass: $39.99 (Regular Price: $44.99)
Per game: $10.99

The All-Access includes playoffs and any televised exhibition games. Subscribers can also download three games to keep offline.

The Banjo-Mutts have a news release on a new recruit. Ben Saunderson was the captain of the Saskatoon Blades and plays defence. This raises the question: Who have the Evil Monkeys recruited?

August 16, 2025 - CANADA WEST TRANSACTIONS SUMMARY

This is an update/replacement of the summary posted on July 9, 2025. The new parts are in red. MacEwan and Regina have posted team roster pages (linked in their respective segments). Not all players announced at Elite Prospects and/or prior press releases are listed on those sites, and those omissions have also been noted.

I don't usually do a cross-conference summary of recruits until team roster pages are out, because you need to know who is returning as well as who is arriving and leaving to gauge a team's outlook. However, the change of the NCAA eligibility rules makes this a year of large transition.

For each entry I have the player's name, position, and his 2024-25 team(s). If the player had a different junior or university team in prior seasons, those are also noted. Junior B or Midget teams are excluded. The links go the players' Elite Prospects page. The departures segment links just to the team transfers page, not to each individual player.

August 20, 2025: BCIHL NEWS

The BCIHL has a season preview story, and a Commitments Page, on their website.

Victoria is the reigning champions, having pipped the regular season champions Vancouver Island in the tournament final. It would appear that those two remain favourites, with Logan Lake, Okanagan, and Simon Fraser's 2nd team filling out the schedule.

The recruits listed are predominantly Junior B grads. British California has three large Junior B leagues, the Kootenay International (KIJHL), Vancouver Island (VIJHL), and the Pacific (PJHL), with 45 teams. They now call that level "Junior A Tier 2". No, the BCHL is not "Junior A Tier 1". Nobody is! BC evidently has a turd-polishing committee at work here.

Once again, all BCIHL games are available free on their YouTube channel. It starts with an exhibition game between Portage College (ACAC) and UVic on September 12, 2025. It looks like BCIHL home exhibition games are included.

August 23, 2025: A SLEW OF ANNOUNCEMENTS AROUND THE C.W.

The week ended with a flurry of press releases around the CW, including the Bisons. The linked story dealt with Miguel Bouvier, who captained the NorMan (formerly OCN) Blizzard to the Turnbull Cup, and Tanner Willick, a two-time AJHL d-man of the year who has transferred from the NCAA. Both were previously listed at Elite Prospects (and cited in this thread) and Bouvier was featured in an MJHL story. This leaves Kaycee Coyle, Ethan DeKay, Aidan Litke, Joel Purdom, and (possibly) Lucas Brenton as recruits still awaiting their spotlight stories.

➤ GoBisons: Men's hockey announce commitment of forward Miguel Bouvier and defenceman Tanner Willick

The Banjo-Mutts are just over a week away from their season opener in Hungary. I thought they might have a roster page before the trip abroad, but not yet. We do have a story on d-man Karter Prosofsky. He once played for the Winnipeg Ice, and spent last year playing for an Italian side in the Alps Hockey League. If no roster page is updated before the trip, hopefully the Hungarian teams will post rosters and box scores for each game. In that event, one would have to hope that the internet translation from Hungarian to English produces better results than "My hovercraft is full of eels."

Links:
➤ Sask: Huskie Men's Hockey Signs Former WHL and AlpsHL Defenceman Karter Prosofsky

The Evil Monkeys have been the tardiest when it comes to announcements this year. They were also slow (or non-existent) at reporting game and preview stories last season. At one time, they were the best! Is it possible to have no news at this stage of the off-season? At Elite Prospects, they have two arrivals and 11 departures, including six transfers to the NCAA.

In any event, former Monkey Harlan Anderson was admitted to the Apes' Wall of Fame. That's worth a lot of bananas!

Links:
➤ Alberta: Sports Wall of Fame

After an initial flurry of departures to the NCAA, the traffic stalled, and then reversed somewhat as players started moving north. Then Dylan Sydor left the Town of Bedrock (after one season) to have a yabba dabba doo time at Alaska-Fairbanks. This is the Dinos' 6th departure. While low in comparison to the Monkeys, no other CW team is losing more than four players (so far). Two of those six players are headed to the NCAA, and four are going pro.

August 23, 2025: STINKERS START THE SEASON WITHOUT TELLING ANYBODY

CONCORDIA STINGERS 4
NOTTINGHAM PANTHERS 5

I saw some pictures about this game pop up on Instagram. So I looked it up and, lo and behold, the Stinkers have at least a three game tour of the British Isles. Game one in Nottingham, England, game two in Cardiff, Wales, and game three in Dundee, Scotland. Yet these games were not only missing from Concordia's schedule page, there were no news stories elsewhere on their own website.

The Stinkers blew a 4-2 lead in the 3rd period to start with a loss. The Panthers notched three goals in the last five minutes. The Stinkers also lost an overtime period, which was agreed-upon before-hand to be played no matter what the outcome of the actual game. Of note, Nottingham dressed a 17 year old named Alex Rushby. Keep that name in mind.

The remaining games on the EIHL schedule are:
Sun Sep 24 Concordia at Cardiff Devils 5:00 GMT/11:00 am CDT
Sat Sep 30 Concordia at Dundee Stars 7:00 GMT/1:00 CDT

I would guess that there would be a game in those six off days against a non-EIHL opponent. My scouring of the internet came up blank, however.

Concordia's next opponent is the Cardiff Devils. They opened with a 5-1 exhibition win over Rapaces de Gap (from France). Former Bluegar Nolan Yaremko has turned pro with the Devils.

The Dundee Stars have a new signing with CW roots, namely former Calgary Dino Brad Schoonbaert from Brandon.

All told, the USports grads on opposing teams in this tour include: David Noel (Notts/UQTR), Matt Alfaro (Notts/Calgary), Tyson Helgesen (Cardiff/MRU), Riley Brandt (Cardiff/RMC & MacEwen), Kristoff Kontos (Cardiff/StFX), Cole Sanford (Cardiff/Alberta), Nolan Yaremko (Cardiff/MRU), Justin Bean (Dundee/York), Drydn Dow (Dundee/Calgary), Matt Boudens (Dundee/UNB), Kameron Kielly (Dundee/UPEI), and Brad Schoonbaert (Dundee/Calgary).

So here's McGill's rebrand. A new record in BORING. Why bother? How much money is spent on rebrands? I think these things are generally a waste, and this one especially so.

August 24, 2025: STINKERS BEAT THE DEVILS

CONCORDIA STINGERS 3
CARDIFF DEVILS 2

Despite being outshot 54-21, the Stinkers evened their tour record at 1-1 in Wales. The only further game I have found is on Saturday, September 30, 2025 in Scotland at the Dundee Stars. I suspect that they have an additional game in that long gap, perhaps against a second-tier NIHL opponent. Finding scores on this tour is not easy. But I did find a Devils' Fan Site, in the links. Still nothing with words at any Concordia website or social media. They did have an IG clip of Cardiff entering the ice before a sold-out crowd, which I cannot find. I did get a couple of IG links. They had great crowds in both venues thus far. IIRC, the Scottish teams don't draw as well.

August 26, 2025: ONE MORE GAME ANNOUNCED

One more non-conference game for the Bisons. In the Christmas/New Year holiday season they already have a game on December 30 against Nebraska-Omaha (and their roster of USports poaches), and now on January 2 it is off to Minnesota-Duluth. Neither of these, nor the game at North Dakota, are yet on the official Bison schedule.

August 28, 2025: ANOTHER BISON PRESS RELEASE

The latest story at GoBisons.ca features Kaycee Coyle (defenceman) and Joel Purdom (forward). Now all new recruits announced on LOI and/or Elite Prospects other than Ethan DeKay, Aidan Litke, and Lucas Brenton have been featured.

This story adds that Purdom was the team captain in Powell River last year and in 2024 was named the Selkirk Steelers' Most Inspirational Player award winner.

Meanwhile, Coyle was was the MJHL's MVP and Defenceman of the Year in 2023-24, playing for the Niverville Nighthawks. He then split last year between the BCHL and NAHL, and got a scholarship to the new program at Tennessee State. However, that program hit the financial skids, leaving many players looking for a new school.

August 30, 2025: Preview: SASKATCHEWAN at EUROPE

The CW pre-season begins on August 31st with the Banjo-Mutts starting their tour of Hungary and Slovakia. Here’s the schedule:

Sun Aug 31 Saskatchewan at UTE Budapest 9:00am CST/10:00 CDT
Tue Sep 2 Saskatchewan at HK Nitra 10:00am CST/11:00 CDT
Wed Sep 3 Saskatchewan at Ferencvaros Budapest 10:30am CST/11:30 CDT
Fri Sep 5 Saskatchewan at HK Spisska Nova Ves 9:30am CST/10:30 CDT

The first three games are part of this preview, and the game on September 5th will be previewed with next weekend’s games.

The Mutts’ roster page has not been updated, but Elite Prospects has updated their Team Page (along with those of Regina and MacEwan). I include their roster update with this post.

UTE Budapest has quite a few Canadian players, including former Brandon Wheat King Luka Berzan. They finished 8th out of 10 teams in the Hungarian Erste Liga last year. Though not a highly touted league (like the KHL etc.) there are a lot of players there with AHL or ECHL backgrounds.

HK Nitra are in the Slovak Extra Liga, where they finished 3rd of 12 teams. Former Evil Monkey Elias Carmichael has signed there.

Ferencvarosi TC play in the multi-national ICE Hockey League (International Central European Hockey League), mostly based in Austria but with teams in South Tirol (part of Italy), Slovenia, and Hungary, and formerly from other countries as well. It used to be called the EBEL. It is a very good league, ranked in Europe’s top six leagues. Last year the league was 40.3% Austrian and 17.6% Canadian. They were in the Hungarian Erste Liga last year, where they were 5th out of 10 teams. They have Tyler Coulter, formerly with the Calgary Dinosaurs and Brandon Wheat Kings, and Maxime Trepanier, formerly with Concordia, on their roster.

All I saw was the score pop up on and then disappear from Instagram. So the Stinkers go 2-1 on their trip through the UK.

The Hungarians don’t seem to be big on hockey stats. Or game reports, for that matter. However, they have a YouTube channel and the game was streamed, albeit without play-by-play.

The Saskatown Star-Phoenix had an article about Landon Kosior (who had previously committed to Nebraska-Omaha) coming back, and Hudson Thornton (who had previously committed to the Mutts) going to Bemidji State.

September 2, 2025: NEW BISON LOGOS, MUTTS LOSE IN O.T.

The Bisons have announced their new logo, and issued another press release on one of the new recruits.

I mostly see all “rebranding” as a waste of money. This new logo is very good, but so was the old one. The Centennial logo (the word Manitoba in the shape of a bison) is still the best one, and most iconic. Like NWT’s polar bear-shaped licence plates.

The latest press release is for Ethan DeKay, leaving just Aidan Litke and (possibly) Lucas Brenton for feature stories. The roster page is still 2024-25’s, so we don’t know who all is coming back for sure.

DeKay is an example of Manitoba’s somewhat enlarged recruiting footprint. He is from Mississauga, Ontario but played for the Weyburn Red Wings in the SJHL. He is on the smaller side (5'10", 170-pounds) but has some scoring touch, at least when he played in the SJHL. He was named the team's Most Dedicated Player and Hardest Worker in 2025, and was committed to Michigan Tech in the NCAA.

Two games, two overtimes, one OTW, and one OTL. The last game was in Hungary, this one was against some wild and crazy Slovakian guys.

I used a translator to get an English version of the game. It was awkwardly worded, but that’s okay. They had a mini-summary in the article, and Nitra’s roster, There was no Sask roster posted.
Nitra – University of Saskatchewan 3:2pp (0:0, 1:2, 1:0, 1:0)

Nitra: 25. Jackson (Chreno, Passolt), 42. Passolt (Lacta, Chrenko) , 62. Čederle (Kristof)
Sask: 23. Roulette, 31. Regnier (Kinningurgh)

The translation of the game story from Hungarian to English is worth reading for all linguists. Sporting jargon often translates oddly. For example, "In the first third there was no groping hockey ...." In the Brad Marchand story (a former player visited him), Halifax was translated as "fishifax". No word on whether his hovercraft was full of eels, or if the record was scratched. (Only Monty Python fans will catch those references.) However, Banjo-Mutt Jordan Cole " ... flashed and found a way between the goalkeeper’s legs ...." Hockey Canada may launch an enquiry over that one.

Anyhow, this game was tied with about 7 minutes left when Sask took a 3-2 lead, then salted it away with a pair of empty-netters. They also had a mini-summary which was useful:
Men's Ice Hockey, Preparing match

FTC-Telekom – University of Saskatchewan 2-5 (1-0, 0-2, 1-3)

FTC-Telekom: Nagy Kristóf (Golden) – Bengtsson, Ytterell, Laskawy, Coulter, Shaw – Lindgren, Horváth, Sofron, Rönni, Tammela – Tóth G., Tyni, Mihalik, Kestils, Molnár – Tóth R., Seregély, Mattyasovszky, Nagy Krisztián, Galajda, Head coach:

University of Saskatchewan: Venne (Thomson) – Jhonston, Kosior, Petruic, Pillar, Roulette – Saunderson, Rhinehart, Hayes, Pelletier, Berthole – Jordan, Prosofsky, Sorensen, Tkachuk, Ong – Buckberger, Somers, Penner, Head coach: Cote Brandin
