Preview: September 5-6, 2025: BISONS OFF FOR THE LAST TIME

The Bisons will not be starting until next weekend. In fact, almost everybody is. Two CW teams play an interlock, and two OUA teams play one another out east.

MacEwan was at one time a member of the ACAC. They won the conference titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019. In 2020 they finished 3rd, beat Concordia 2 games to 1 in the quarter-finals, and then came covid. This was the last time these teams shared a conference. RDP was 20-6-2 and MacEwan was 20-7-1. RDP is on a 3-peat streak of their own, winning the titles in 2023, 2024, and 2025.

The Family Guys have lost their 1st, 2nd, 7th, and 8th leading scorers from a year ago. The recruits are not a bad group, so maybe just a slight tick down on paper.

The Banjo-Mutts are 2-0-1 on their European tour heading into this wrap-up game. Spisska finished first in the Slovak Extraliga last year, before losing in the quarter-finals. After scouring their roster, I see one USports grad, Anthony Salinitri, from the Windsor Lancers. He now also plays for Italy in international competitions.

There was a pre-game preview story posted, but nothing post-game. I waited, but no luck. So the Banjo-Mutts go (in European standings format) 1-1-1-1, or (in North American format) 2-1-1.

The Family Guys were cookin’ on home ice. They are the only team in the CW to have a bye week next weekend. I'm not sure why they didn't schedule this series for next weekend, when neither team plays and it's the normal start weekend for the rest of the CW.

September 10, 2025: REGINA AND UBC ROSTER UPDATES

Regina posted their roster page a while back, and UBC has now followed suit. So here is the complete breakdown of returnees, arrivals, and departures for each team.

When the Banjo-Cats first posted their roster, I was awaiting an update. They had four new recruits listed without jersey numbers. They also had six recruits listed at Elite Prospects who were not on the website roster page at all. Now I see that the roster page has added Benjamin Stewart, who is not listed at Elite Prospects and has no position noted on the website. I cannot imagine 34 players sticking on the roster, so this is likely a training camp roster only. Looking at this, Regina should be maybe just a tick better than last year IF they can choose their final 26 or 27 players from this entire list.

The T-irds appear to have adequately replaced their departures, so I would say they look (on paper) to be similar to last year.

September 11, 2025: EVIL MONKEYS ROSTER

The Hockey Tech segment of the CW site has links set up for the exhibition games scheduled at Alberta and UBC on Saturday. The Alberta link leads to a training camp roster. Mount Royal and UBC are also linked up by that route. The returning players are often those who seldom, or never, played last year. I added their team scoring rank from last year.

Elite Prospects has a goaltender from Sweden by this name who never played last year, and Alberta lists him as a forward. I sense a mistake.

This is the first of ten games between two teams with new logos. My practice has been to use old or alternate logos in the pre-season, so behold the vintage look while it lasts.

Last year, the Bisons went 2-1-0 against the Banjo-Cats in the pre-season, and 4-2-0 in the regular season.

With the demise of LeagueStat, I don’t know what to expect in the pre-season. In the past, some home teams uploaded rosters and summaries on occasion. Regina was not generally one such team. There used to be three “paths” to CW stats and information: LeagueStat, Hockey Tech (via the website at LINK), and the regular website LINK. LeagueStat and Hockey Tech were both good for the regular season. We’ll soon find out, I guess.

CanadaWest.tv shows the Saturday game on their “upcoming games” schedule. That would be nice to see. Hopefully, this will include roster uploads for both sides.

Regina has a roster page uploaded right now and Manitoba does not. Despite the exodus to the NCAA, neither team has been affected so far. Regina appears to have a marginally better-than-average recruiting class by their standards. Manitoba appears to have addressed their blue line weaknesses with solid recruits. Their only confirmed losses are Andre Sutter, a frequent healthy scratch with 4 goals in 3 years, and Brandon Casey, 3rd pair defenceman with 2 assists last year.

This home-and-home series is a rematch of last year’s CW semi-final, won by the Bluegars in three games. The Missing Monkeys have suffered a mass exodus of a dozen players. Seven of those have gone to the NCAA, and five to European pro leagues. They have a lot of returning players who were seldom dressed a year ago. They have some unexpectedly good recruits, but this year’s recruiting class is way below their standard.

The Bluegars finally broke through to qualify for the U-Cup for the first time, where they lost a mega-overtime game to the TMU Bald in the opening round. They have lost Clay Hanus, the Bobby Orr of U-Sports defencemen, but otherwise look to have a roster similar to last year, roster review pending.

Meanwhile, it used to be that the Evil Monkeys could book their U-Cup flights and hotel rooms in pre-season. They qualified for 20 out of 22 U-Cups in the 2000s, until missing the last two years and having the Covid season cancelled. The Saturday game is slated to be in Hockey Tech’s “live links” noted above.

CALGARY DINOSAURS (2024-25: 16-10-2, 22-11-2, 2025 OHT35 #11, lost CW quarter-final)
SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (2-1-1, 2024-25: 23-5-0, 28-6-0, 2025 OHT35 #2, won CW final, U-Cup bronze)

While the Missing Monkeys have grabbed all the attention in U-Sports circles, Bedrock U has a host of players headed elsewhere. They have lost five to the pros, and three to the NCAA. The replacements are largely Junior A players. I suspect a minor down-tick for them. (Roster review pending, of course!)

On the other hand, the defending champion Banjo-Mutts appear to have adequately replaced their departures. They did reasonably well in Slovakia and Hungary. The big question is in goal, where the Ross-Kooy partnership was best in the conference a year ago.

In an odd scheduling twist, on Friday night Holy Trinity will host SFU’s BCIHL squad whilst the T-irds host SFU’s Indy Globetrotters squad. Then on Saturday, it is TWU v UBC.

While UBC lost two good players to the NCAA and one more to the AHL, it looks like they did a fair job finding replacements. None of them jump out as a scoring champion type of player, though.

For Trinity, I really need to see a roster page. Right now it looks like more of the same.

There was no game story on this one, but Sask uploaded everything onto the Game Centre page, including line-ups. The teams also added (earlier on Friday) their exhibition rosters. Calgary has just 22 names, so I suspect they’ll add more as they appear in a game. Meanwhile, Sask has 30 names, leading me to believe that cuts could happen.

The shoot-out took eight rounds before the Banjo-Mutts claimed victory. They are now 3-1-1 in the pre-season. This was Bedrock U’s first game.

September 13, 2025: BISONS SWEEP IN A SHOOTOUT

MANITOBA BISONS 2
REGINA COUGARS 1
(in a shootout)

Links:
➤ UofR: Schedule & Results
➤ UofM: Schedule & Results

Quick Summary
Man: Swetlikoff (13:25 2nd)
Reg: Bjorklund (1:19 2nd)
Goal: Man: Plowman W, Reg: Maric, Cartwright L

There were no stats (like shots on goal) available.

Shoot-out:
Reg: 19 Bjorklund missed, 11 Runke missed, 23 Pearce missed, 27 Barlage missed
Man: 17 Bruce missed, 24 Brennan scored, 16 Joss missed, 25 Dekay scored

This game time was moved back a half-hour, yet it wasn’t until the first intermission that I saw the Bisons post an IG picture with their line-up on it. Here it is:

Goal:
34 Plowman (30 Kieper)

Defence:
2 Brenton - 3 Boroschawa
4 Bonni - 6 Coyle
27 Turner - 22 Willick
5 Bielik

Forwards:
9 Alarie - 20 Zaplinksy - 17 Bruce
25 Dekay - 14 Swetlikoff - 24 Brennan
29 King - 28 Behun - 16 Joss
12 Trimble - 11 Purdom - 26 Boucher
23 Lane - 19 Arpin - 10 Bouvier

Recruits not listed:
- Aiden Litke - F

Departures
5 Brandon Casey D - transferred
8 Evan Toth D - medical school
11 Hayden Ostir F - graduated
13 Andre Sutter F - to Switzerland
34 Ross Hawryluk G - transferred

Potential returnees not dressed:
4 Parker Malchuk D *
6 Lucas Fry D *
10 Josh Paulhus F *
14 Riley Zimmerman F *
18 Jonny Hooker F
21 Dawson Pasternak F
22 Riley Stotts F
24 Owen Wareham D *
25 Kian Calder D *
30 Kolby Thornton G *
31 Braden Holt G

* Indicates that a new player was using this number.

Also, I thought I saw a defenceman wearing #13. That appears to be an error on my part.

The Bisons were wearing last year’s jerseys and the name bars were removed. So it is possible that some returnees who were not dressed are nevertheless in camp. Those whose number was “taken” are more likely to not be returning. I do see that Ben Bonni (who was #15 last year) was wearing Parker Malchuk’s #4, and nobody was wearing #15. Also, 3rd string goaltender Ross Hawryluk is now on Regina’s roster page.

They rotated five lines of forwards which kept the game looking very much like an exhibition tilt. The Pasternak-Hooker-Stotts line was not dressed, so there’s 6 lines, plus Litke. Six of the seven defencemen dressed are new recruits. I don’t know if any other defencemen are in camp. IMO you can’t rely on a defence with just seven bodies on it. Malchuk was one of the top defencemen last year, and Calder was a fiesty addition.

The Bison roster contained two previously unannounced recruits.

BLAKE SWETLIKOFF - F - Idaho (ECHL) [prior Kamloops, Lethbridge, Spokane (WHL)]

Swetlikoff is coming from the ECHL, where he played one season after a WHL career where he was twice an assistant captain. He only played 32 games in the “E”, but in prior seasons he played 225 games in the Dub, where he had a 39-76-116 stats line.

DAVID BIELIK - D - Virden (MJHL)

It is always helpful to pick up a solid local boy from the MJHL. He is only 5’7” but did have fairly good stats for a d-man, with 12-73-85 in 164 games. He also once wore an “A”.

This was a one-goal game, with an empty-netter. In the net, Sims beat Sim! Based on the numbers, it looks like the Evil Monkeys are an underdog this year when they face top level teams.

I guess that a split was warranted here, with two shoot-outs. These were becoming a rarity. But this weekend, they were abundant.

After an embarrassing loss to The Clown, the T-irds bounced back with a reasonable victory on the stats sheet. The T-irds play SFU and Holy Trinity again next weekend, then visit Bedrock U to wrap the pre-season. Until then, we cannot really gauge the T-irds.

Overall, the Bisons have improved their line-up at a time when most rosters around the CW are treading water, or slipping somewhat. The Bisons gained a lot of NCAA players or de-commits, while losing nobody.

On the blueline, Malchuk was a regular (gone after three years). Then they lost those sophomore Junior A recruits (Fry, Wareham, Calder, and Casey) who came in together in 2023-24. I’ll miss Calder’s grit. The only returnees are Ben Bonni and Evan “Doc” Toth, who graduated but is now in med school. So that’s a bonus returnee.

The six recruits include a returning pro, one from the Dub, an NCAA transfer, an NCAA de-commit, and two star-quality Junior A grads. Including Bonni and Toth, seven of the eight were either in the WHL or played in or were committed to the NCAA. An overall huge upgrade.

Up front, Stotts is departed after one season (and three more at Calgary), and he was a reliable PPG player. Zimmerman had some grit, which I liked, but only had one goal and one assist last year. Ostir and Paulhus combined for four goals and six assists. Of the 12 returnees, 7 were in the WHL at one time, and 5 are Junior A.

Swetlikoff is the only ECHL/WHL forward coming in, after last year’s bumper crop. The other four forward recruits are Junior A grads who excelled at that level (which includes one NCAA de-commit). All together, 9 forwards (or 10 if Litke is around) are WHL or NCAA. There will be a lot of healthy scratches up front regardless.

In goal, Holt was #1 last year and is back. Thornton is gone after two seasons. IMO, he was a pretty good goaltender. Hawryluk, the 3rd stringer, is on Regina’s roster page. I thought their goaltending was fair. The replacements look solid. Kieper finished his overage career in Flin Flon after a WHL career, and posted stellar numbers. I saw Plowman on TV last weekend and he looks pretty good.

Using the WHL/NCAA metric to measure the team, the Bisons have 7 defencemen, 9 forwards, and 3 goaltenders of that grade. They’ll need it! They share a division with Saskatchewan, Mount Royal, and Calgary. Regina is also improved. It is by far the tougher of the CW’s two divisions. It could have the top four teams in the CW.

I will be at my first live hockey of the season on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, and cannot wait. I suspect that all players will suit up at least once on the weekend. Right now, there are no stats or stories from either team. Last Saturday’s game in Regina was the only one with a link on CanadaWest.tv as I post. The “live links” are currently slated to be active only for Alberta’s home game. That could change.

There are some interesting “other” links this week. The CBC Streaming has three men’s games (two including the Bisons) and three women’s games during October. This is a good combination to have with the paid CanadaWest.tv service. I also added three stories about the pending new athlete transfer rules. Check them at your will.

This is a home-and-home Battle of Edmontown. Friday at the Clare Drake Arena, Saturday at the Downtown Community Arena.

The Family Guys had a tidy sweep of Red Deer Poly a week ago, whilst the Evil Monkeys were torn apart by the Bluegars. I know it’s “only exhibition”, but after being the off-season’s biggest loser, a lot of eyes will be on this one to see where the Apes fit into the CW hierarchy.

The linked story is on the Evil Monkeys’ returnee, Dawson Davidson. He went to Denmark last year and is now back to continue his USports career.

MOUNT ROYAL COUGARS (0-0-0, 2-0-0, OHT35 #n/a, 2024-25: 22-6-0, lost U-Cup QF)

Not to be outdone by the neighbours to the north, in the Town of Bedrock they also have a crosstown home-and-home battle. Friday is at the Father David Bauer Arena, and Saturday at the Flames Community Arena.

Both sides had good weekends last week. The Dinos split a pair of shoot-out games in Saskatown. The Dinos were not hit as badly as Alberta with NCAA defections, but were still damaged. It appears that they may have done more to rebuild. Meanwhile, the Bluegars gave the Evil Monkeys a whipping. Too bad this isn’t on CanadaWest.tv. I’d like to see what these teams look like.

➤ Vancouver Province: SFU learns from football PR fiasco, opens up about possible return to Canadian competition

British California has a mini-tournament of their own. On Friday, Simple Simon Fraser hosts UBC and Holy Trinity hosts the Okanagan Lakers. Then on Saturday, Holy Trinity hosts UBC in the “final”. Friday’s game at SFU is available on the BCIHL’s YouTube page, free of charge.

There are two linked stories from The Vancouver Province on the fiasco at SFU. They bolted from the CW to head to the NCAA largely due to football. Then their conference folded and the team was horrible, playing before crowds smaller than even the CW would draw elsewhere. This led to the demise of the program.

Coach Mark Coletta said in 2023 that they could be a Division 1 contender within 5 years if granted varsity status, and an annual budget would be $850k to $1 million. Of note, they almost never play at home and, when they do, draw flies. However, management appear to be making a plan to grovel their way back to the CW.
The school announced on its website Wednesday [September 18, 2025] that they’ve commissioned Bob Copeland of McLaren Global Sports Solutions to do a report on the impact of “joining U Sports and/or other Canadian competitive frameworks.”
Also:
Copeland listed in his football report application fees for Canada West at $313,000 and for U Sports at $55,000.
I don’t know if that fee is all-inclusive for an all-sport membership or not. The report is due in mid-November.

Quick Summary
Reg: 1st Wills, 2nd Houk, Steele, 3rd Whyte, Holoein
Man: 1st Behun, Alarie, Boucher, 3rd Arpin, Swetlikoff, Bruce
Goal: Reg: Malic (24 shots, 18 saves), Holt (26 shots, 21 saves)

The first exhibition game of the season is always nice. Especially on a cool, wet evening. I downloaded roster pages in advance, which is handy in this era of reliance upon the “it’s online” excuse. This night, the Uof M Guest wifi was also not working. If it had been, I’d have seen the IG picture:

Why are teams doing stuff like this rather than putting out a tweet and a post on their website? Any reason why they can’t post it everywhere?

Anyhow, the scratches were forwards #21 Dawson Pasternak and #29 Michael King, and goaltender #34 Cole Plowman. Lucas Brenton switched from #13 to #2 and Braden Holt switched from #31 to #1. They are using last year’s uniforms for the exhibition games.

There are no boxscores, summaries, or reports on these games. Oddly, the Bisons had six different goal scorers, and the Banjo-Cats had five. The leading scorers for the Bisons were Skyler Bruce (1G 2A), Blake Swetlikoff (1G 1A), Jackson Arpin (1G 1A), Tanner Willick (2A), and Grady Lane (2A).

The Bisons rotated all five lines and all four d-pairs regardless of PP and PK, thus making momentum difficult to build. IMO, there were far too many players out there. The Bisons had a 5-3 lead and seemed to be putting things together. But the Kittens made it close when an offensive zone turnover by the Bisons resulted in a 2-on-1 going the opposite way, which was converted. No problem, it was soon 6-4. But with two minutes left, Regina had a PP, pulled their goalie, and made it 6-5 final.

Alta: D. Davidson (07:06 1st) , J. Hall (13:59 1st) , A. Thacker (15:31 2nd) , M. Ward (05:21 3rd)
Goal: Mac: Ironside (31 shots, 27 saves), Alta: Barwick (37 shots, 34 saves)

For some reason, the Hockey Tech summary describe the Evil Monkeys as “NAIT”. Well, why not? All these teams are from Edmontown.

The Monkeys built a 4-0 lead and then were left to cling to victory. The Family Guys scored three 3rd period PP goals to make it close. I would still call this a wobbly start for the Monkeys.

There are no reports on this game, which I would like to have seen. The Dinos’ pre-season is thus far better than expected. Bedrock U is now 2-0-1 and the Bluegars are 2-1-0.

I saw the ending of this on YouTube after getting home from the Bison game. The T-irds did not appear to be in top form at all. Their series against the Dinos next week should be telling.

As expected, there were no boxscores, summaries, or game reports for this series. So I compiled my own:

Quick Summary
Man: 1st 8:03 #8 Toth (#5 Bielik & #12 Trimble)
Reg: 1st 17:10 #89 Barnett (#8 Jasper & #21 Borysiuk)
Reg: 2nd 6:10 #23 Pearce (#32 Steele & #8 Jasper)
Man: 2nd 10:59 #14 Swetlikoff (#18 Hooker & #2 Brenton)
Reg: 3rd 15:50 #32 Steele (#23 Pearce)
Goal: Reg: Cunningham (22 shots, 20 saves), Man: Kieper (27 shots, 24 saves)

Once again, a handy line-up picture for the Bisons was uploaded to Instagram:

Brenton wore #2 again, #21 Pasternak, #28 Behun, and #31 Holt were scratched.

Regina lined up like this:

Goal: #1 Cunningham

Defence:
#3 Third - #7 Silzer
#20 Holcien - #28 Heward
#4 Kjemhus - #8 Jasper
#44 Brinson

Note: The Banjo-Cats used a 7-man rotation on the blueline, so these exact pairings were not necessarily used.

Forwards:
#18 Whyte - #27 Barlage - #19 Bjorklund
#29 Doucet - #37 Belitski - #11 Runke
#17 McMillen - #14 Culling - #12 Houk
#89 Barnett - #9 ? - #21 Borysiuk
#16 Desnoyers - #23 Pearce - #32 Steele

Scratches:
D #5 Fishley
F #13 Gulutzan - #22 Wirun - #24 Wills
G #35 Fellner - #39 Maric - #73 Hawryluk

Notes: #22 Wirun and #24 Wills played on Friday and sat out on Saturday to be replaced with #89 Barnett and #21 Borysiuk. #9 was never identified. There is no name on the roster page. The only forward not to have been listed is #13 Gulutzan, so maybe it was him.

Both sides had way too many players dressed to give the game any sort of feel. The fact that both sides did it is surprising. This must be a new pre-season technique at Hockey Canada coaching clinics.

In the 1st period it looked like the Bisons would run away with the game. The shots were 10-3 in their favour early on, but all they could build was a 1-0 lead. In the last three minutes of the period Banjo-Cat #89 Brayden Barnett scored a goal to tie the game, then took a penalty shortly thereafter, and then another penalty skating from the box to the bench.

There were no glaring errors, just a general disinterest and lack of urgency. Even after a pushing match early in the 3rd never prompted much enthusiasm. I hope that next week they use just four lines, use powerplay and penalty killing units, and just dress six defencemen per game.

I have now seen each of the three goaltenders once each, Plowman on video only last weekend. The two new goalkeepers seem satisfactory to me. The returning Braden Holt did well last year, but his game this weekend was the weakest of the three. I wouldn’t jump to any conclusions just yet.

The Bisons are now 3-1-0, and the Banjo-Cats are 1-1-2.

This is the 4th year in a row that the Thundermutts have ventured into Friendly Manitoba during the pre-season. Back when Lakehead was called the Nor’westers, these teams were GPAC rivals. In 2022 and 2023 the Regina Banjo-Cats made it a GPAC Revival in a 3-way dance.

The weird thing here is the peculiar start times, i.e. Friday at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday at 10:00 a.m. (Opposite the Canada v England Women’s Rugby World Cup final.) I have heard no reason for this. The Bombers are scheduled to be thrashed by the Tiger-Cats on Saturday afternoon, however in similar situations in the past they have played at Seven Oaks, The Rink, or Dakota’s Jonathan Toews Arena. I can’t imagine that too many people will be able to make it to these start times.

It will be nice to see the Bisons face somebody other than the Banjo-Cats. The Bisons and Mutts are a combined 5-0-1, but have faced just two teams. Both sets of cat-related opponents were non-playoff teams a year ago. The Banjo-Cats look to be improved, but are not expected to be in the playoffs. The Mutts took care of the York Lions in a 2-game series in Nipigon last weekend, winning 5-4 (ot) and 5-2. The mini-clips I saw showed an enthusiastic neutral ice crowd. It is still hard to gauge either side after just one opponent.

The Bison schedule has not updated to include the two games they already played in Regina, nor does it include two games already announced by NCAA opponents. Also no word on any games against the Manitoba Moose.

I also link a new story on Ethan Dekay (from the SJHL) and two (from UVic and UfO) on the impact of the new eligibility rules.

This is a neutral ice series to be played in Cold Lake, Alberta. This is becoming a tradition for these teams. The Banjo-Mutts played evenly against Calgary and then swept NAIT. The Evil Monkeys were dominated by MRU before sweeping MacEwan. This series will help us place the Monkeys in the CW pecking order. Are they still a top contender?

MACEWAN GRIFFINS (0-0-0, 2-2-0, OHT35 #n/a, 2024-25: 10-15-3, lost QF)

The Bluegars whipped Alberta and lost close games to Calgary, whilst The Family Guys swept Red Deer of the ACAC and were swept by Alberta. So I would make the Bluegars the favourites here.

U.B.C. THUNDERBIRDS (0-0-0, 3-0-1, OHT35 #n/a, 2024-25: 18-8-2, lost SF)

Bedrock U has set up live links for these games. While these teams have the same record, Bedrock U has by far the tougher schedule. The Dinos have played Saskatchewan and MRU, very much top tier opponents. However, UBC has played just Holy Trinity and Simon Fraser. So, like Alberta, the T-irds’ place in the CW pecking order is largely to be decided here.

Holy Trinity has arranged a 3-team round-robin weekend against second tier opponents from British California. Simon Fraser hosts Holy Trinity on Thursday, then Vancouver Island on Friday. The weekend wraps with Vancouver Island visiting Holy Trinity on Saturday. I don’t really see this weekend shedding much light on the Spartans. They have had easy wins over BCIHL opponents, and decisive losses against UBC. I don’t see any of these games slated for BCIHL’s YouTube live streams, but that could change.
