The Banjo-Cats have just a one-off road trip to face Minot State. Last year, Minot State lost 6-2 to Saskatchewan and 8-1 to Briercrest of the ACAC. The ACHA covers a wide range of teams. Just last weekend, Eastern Washington were thrashed by Logan Lake 13-1 and 11-0.

September 25, 2025 - More Exhibition Games Confirmed

After noting the lack of updates to the Bison schedule & results page, I saw that they had an IG post which added previously unannounced games against St. Thomas of the NCAA (not the Pids coming back to life) and the Manitoba Moose of the AHL. The game on Oct 6/25 is at the Canada Life Centre. The last Bison game there was against Ukraine's U-25 team.

September 26, 2025: BISONS WIN THE MATINEE

LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 1
MANITOBA BISONS 5

Links:
➤ UofM: Schedule & Results
➤ Lakehead: Lakehead hits the road to play 2 games against the Bisons
➤ Lakehead: Lakehead falls 5-1 to the Bisons (with summary)

This inconvenient Friday matinee had a peculiar feel to it. The Bisons continued with their overflow line-up. Both sides posted rosters to Instagram.

Bison scratches were:
30 Kieper (G) - 8 Toth (D)
19 Arpin (F) - 25 DeKay (F)

Quick Summary
1st Period:
5:06 Man: Pasternak (Hooker, Bonni)

2nd Period:
0:44 Man: Willick (Alaire, Zaplitny)
6:19 Man: Willick (Pasternak, Zaplitny)
12:05 Lake: Fuchs (MacGillivray)

3rd Period:
7:58 Man: Boucher (Trimble, Bielik)
18:35 Man: Hooker (Willick, Purdom) ENG

Goal: Lake: Cicigoi (20 shots, 16 saves), Man: Holt (27 shots, 26 saves)

Braden Holt had one of his better games in goal for the Bisons, in a season where it appears that the team has three good goaltenders.

The goal of the night was the Bison’s 3rd goal, which featured four passes between the scorer Tanner Willick, the helpers Dawson Pasternak and Caden Zaplitny, and Jonny Hooker, who would have had an assist if somebody shot earlier. From a Lakehead point of view, it was amazing that their opponent could complete four passes within 2 or 3 feet of the crease without being touched.

This boosts the Bisons to 4-1-0 on the season, and Lakehead falls to 2-1-0. Saturday’s rematch is at 10:00 a.m.

There are no reports on this game. The Evil Monkeys had IG pictures saying down 1-0 after one and 4-1 after two. Right now, it is hard to put the Apes down as a pre-season contender in the CW. They are lucky to be a 4-team division which includes Holy Trinity and MacEwan.

Calg: M. Corbet (19:25 2nd) , C. Massier (11:38 3rd) , C. Massier (12:49 3rd)
Goal: UBC: Jones (30 shots, 27 saves), Calg: Stankowski (30 shots, 28 saves)

By the stats, this one was dead even. UBC needed to show what they could do against a decent opponent, and I guess all is well pending Saturday’s results.

September 27, 2025: BREAKFAST WITH BISONS ENDS IN A LOSS

LAKEHEAD THUNDERWOLVES 6
MANITOBA BISONS 2

Links:
➤ UofM: Schedule & Results
➤ Lakehead: Lakehead drops Manitoba 6-2 (with summary)
➤ Manitoba Moose: 2025 Training Camp Schedule

In one respect, I didn’t mind getting to a 10:00 a.m. game. It reminds me of the days when minor hockey was a weekend focus of household activity. But the game doesn’t seem completely “real”. The big problem is that the Blue Bombers (of what used to be the Canadian Football League) seal off the exits, making leaving a prolonged and maddening event.

The Bisons posted an IG line-up picture, but Lakehead did not. Friday’s Bison scratches were dressed.

Bison scratches were:
1/31 Holt (G) - 22 Willick (D)
21 Pasternak (F) - 28 Behun (F)

For Lakehead, the changes I noted were:
29 Beauchemin out, 10 Lehto in (F)
4 Hasselgren out, 28 Sharun in (F)
31 Cherepak (G) started in place of 1 Cicigoi

Quick Summary

1st period
12:01 Lake: Janus (Murphy)
13:09 Man: Borschowa (Swetlikoff, Toth)

2nd period
2:05 Lake: Van Unen (Unassisted)
3:17 Lake: Lehto (Whittaker, Janus)
6:17 Lake: Pouliot (Janus, MacGillivray)

10:03 Lake: Sharun (Stojkov, Crane)
15:41 Man: Lane (Brennan, Arpin)
18:26 Lake: Whittaker (Van Unen, DeGrazia)

3rd period
No Scoring

Goal: Lake: Cherepak (29 shots, 27 saves), Man: Plowman (21 shots, 15 saves)

The 2nd period was a disaster in the Bison goal. The Thundermutts scored on their first four shots of the period (as per the scoreboard shot clock, admitttedly not always accurate).

The only real activity in the 3rd period was a series of near fights.

Of note, the Bisons appeared to score in the 2nd period when a shot went through the mesh. But with no video, and no more goal judges, there was nothing the officials could do. (I believe it was Webber’s slapshot against Germany in the previous Olympics that went through the mesh, back in the day.) I do miss the goal judge with the flashing green and red lights.

This ends the “pre-season” segment for both sides, but the Bisons now have four tough games of “non-conference” exhibitions against NCAA and AHL competition. The Bisons were 4-2-0 and the Mutts were 3-1-0.

It was nice that The Family Guys uploaded the stats for this one. The Bluegars dominated the shots by a wide margin. The Bluegars finish at 4-2-0 and Mac is 2-4-0 (0-4-0 against CW).

Goal: UBC: Jones (32 shots, 31 saves), Calg: Tetachuk (28 shots, 25 saves)

It’s not too often that an exhibition game can be called a “key” game. But for the T-irds, they needed to show they could do well against the top tier teams. The split of a series with fairly even stats would indicate that they are in the upper tier yet again, along with Bedrock U, Sask, and MRU.

After being crushed on Friday night, the Evil Monkeys needed to show something here. This allows them to be 3-3-0 in pre-season. It is odd that in all three series they have improved greatly from Friday to Saturday. Against Mount Royal, they lost 8-2, then 5-3. Against MacEwan they won 4-3, then crushed them 6-0. Now we have their first split, an 8-1 loss followed by a 3-1 win. I have some doubts about them heading into the season.

Meanwhile, the Banjo-Mutts have done enough to enter the season as an upper tier team. They were 2-1-1 in Europe, 2-1-1 against the CW, and 2-0-0 against NAIT of the ACAC. My opening "tiers" would be:

Upper: Calgary, UBC, Mount Royal, Saskatchewan
Middle: Alberta, Manitoba
Lower: Regina, MacEwan, Trinity Western

Back when the Bisons were a national contender, this series stood at 4-2 for the Moose and most games were closely contested. The series was revived two years ago, and the games have been fairly one-sided in favour of the Moose. I remember that the Bisons had an injury plague last year at this time, and had to “borrow” three defencemen from the Moose for game two, which made for a much better game.

Here are the past scores:

October 8, 2002: Moose 6, Bisons 3
September 29, 2005: Bisons 3, Moose 1
October 4, 2005: Moose 6, Bisons 4
September 26, 2007: Moose 7, Bisons 1
September 30, 2008: Bisons 6, Moose 2
September 29, 2010: Moose 2, Bisons 1
October 5, 2023: Moose 5, Bisons 1
October 9, 2023: Moose 5, Bisons 1
October 3, 2024: Moose 7, Bisons 0
October 8, 2024: Moose 5, Bisons 2

Here’s the promo for the 2005 series:

In between these games, the Bisons have a Friday-Saturday tour to the USA, to be previewed in the normal weekend preview. Meanwhile, the Moose have an intra-squad game out in Steinbach’s new arena on Sunday, October 5th. The Moose season starts on October 10th.

The PA was sometimes hard to hear, so there is a fair degree of doubt here. Also, they did not operate the shots clock.

Quick Summary
1st Period
07:54 Moose: 9 Vitelli (47 Anhorn, 43 Engum)
10:44 Moose: 24 Julien (40 O’Leary, 37 Osmundson)

2nd Period
01:08 Bisons: 17 Bruce (16 Joss)
04:06 Moose: 47 Anhorn (40 O’Leary, 24 Julien)
07:01 Moose: 24 Julien (8 Zloty, 4 Barteaux)
07:55 Moose: 9 Vitelli (unassisted)
15:06 Bisons: 14 Swetlikoff (18 Hooker, 23 Lane)
16:09 Bisons: 6 Coyle (17 Bruce, 23 Lane)
19:56 Bisons: 21 Pasternak (14 Swetlikoff, 18 Hooker) PP

3rd Period
06:38 Moose: 22 Dureau (8 Zloty)
08:58 Bisons: 21 Pasternak (Swetlikoff, 18 Hooker)
14:51 Moose: 20 Empey (8 Zloty, 24 Julien)

Goal: Bisons: Holt: 1st & 2nd periods: 5 goals, Kieper: 3rd period: 2 goals; Moose: Worthington: whole game: 5 goals

The first few shifts went back and forth nicely, but then the Moose had the Bisons reeling. It was only 2-0 after the 1st, but jit could have been much worse for the Bisons.

The 2nd period got off to a quick start when Skylar Bruce converted a pass form Mitchell Joss, threw out a few moves, and scored a picture goal. However, it looked like that would be a consolation prize in a drubbing when the Moose made it 5-1 in short order.

But cue the comeback! The Bisons started getting some confidence as their top two lines more than held their own. A pair of goals a minute apart reversed the flow of the game. The Bisons had the Moose reeling, forced a penalty with 37 seconds left, sent out five forwards and then Dawson Pasternak converted a nice passing play with four seconds left to make it a 5-4 game heading into the 3rd period.

For the 3rd period, the Moose replaced Braden Holt with Matthew Kieper in goal. I thought that maybe Jaydon Dureau’s Moose goal might have ended this (it might have been high-sticked into the net, but there was no video). Instead a second goal of Pasternak form Blake Swetlifoff and Captain Hooker again made it anybody’s game. After some back-and-forth action it ended with just one more Moose goal.

All-in-all, a much better game from the Bisons in this match-up over the last three years.

The weekend preview is due on Thursday.

The Bisons will face two Top Twenty ranked NCAA opponents this weekend on their tour to the Excited States. The St. Thomas Tommies (NOT the Pids) are a relatively new program in Division 1, and the perennially high-ranked UND No Longer Fighting Sioux, or Former Flickertails. These two Bison opponents will then face one another on October 10th-11th. Hopefully they’ll see sense and have Thanksgiving when it belongs that weekend!

Thus far the Bisons have dressed more players than they need, which IMO is not a plus. Sure, it gets more players on the ice, and it eases them into the season, but for W’s, it’s better to have your four lines, and six defencemen.

I’m thinking the Bisons will want to equal last year’s results against these teams.

The CW released their coaches’ poll. The results are:
1. Saskatchewan Huskies - 71 (7)
2. Mount Royal Cougars - 64 (1)
3. UBC Thunderbirds - 58 (1)
4. Alberta Golden Bears - 49
5. Calgary Dinos - 48
6. MacEwan Griffins - 36
7. Manitoba Bisons - 31
8. Regina Cougars - 23
9. Trinity Western Spartans - 16

The Bisons enter the season having recruited a new defence, which they really needed. The players they lost were mostly on the bottom half of the roster, the exception being Riley Stotts. So the question is whether they can bump one of the top three in their division. Problem is that Sask, MRU, and Calgary could be the top three teams in the conference.

The Saturday game in this series is available on YouTube and a CBC link to be announced.

The Evil Monkeys host Holy Trinity in a series that has some importance. The crazy CW playoff format means that only one team in a four team division (which includes these two plus UBC and MacEwan) will miss the playoffs. While I would put money on that team being Holy Trinity, the Apes need to make it happen.

In the pre-season, the Spartans lost twice to UBC, their only games against CW opposition. They defeated Simon Fraser’s BCIHL and NCAA2 teams, plus Okanagan and Vancouver Island. The Monkeys played poorly every Friday, then bounced back on Saturday in all three series. Nobody lost more quality players than they did. Will they rebound? Or will they be a .500 team?

Here we have a rematch of last year’s final, won by the Banjo-Mutts. They’ll be raising a banner and maybe unveiling a new fire hydrant for the Mangy Ones. The Bluegars lost Clay Hanus to Europe, which is a huge loss after the put up Bobby Orr numbers from the blueline last year. And the Mutts lost Roddy Ross, the all-star goaltender. Nevertheless, these teams were not damaged as badly as the rest of the CW contenders. This is the series which will have my attention.

Bedrock U slipped the #5 in the CW last year, and seemed to lose a lot to the NCAA recruiting. They have a whole load of new recruits, but both returning goaltenders who led them to the conference final two years ago. They had the best pre-season results in the conference. The Banjo-Cats improved on paper, but are still given little chance at a playoff berth. They should be capable of playing spoiler as the season unfolds.

The T-irds and Family Guys faced off in last year’s quarter-finals, won by the T-irds. In the pre-season, the T-irds played locally for two weeks, claiming a pair of wins over Holy Trinity and splitting a pair of shoot-outs with Simon Fraser’s Globetrotters. When they faced a stronger opponent in Calgary, they did get a split. I’m thinking that UBC is down a slight tick from last year, and The Family Guys are pretty much the same.

Holy Trinity came close in this one. The Evil Monkeys scored with just over a minute left to break a 2-2 tie. I also see that Trinity had an unsuccessful penalty shot in the 2nd period. Will the Apes keep alive their trend of a Friday fumble followed by a Saturday spring-back? The rematch is streamed by CBC on YouTube.

Still no score from Friday night. It was dubbed a "scrimmage".

I was listening on radio until my multi-screens with CFL, MLB, and CWTV coverage made it hard to hear. The first period was reasonably good, with UND leading 11-7 on shots and 2-0 on goals. The Bisons took a lot of penalties, and UND went 3-for-7. The Bisons’ new kit was on display!

IG Video Clip

I generally like the new look, but the blue strip isn’t necessary. They usually have pretty good uniforms with a unique brown colour.

Goal: TWU: Sommer (51 shots, 46 saves), Alta: Sim (27 shots, 26 saves)

This was CBC’s Game-of-the-Week. Not exactly a marquee match-up, but any coverage is good coverage. This was just a 2-1 game into the 3rd period, so the Evil Monkeys could have easily slipped on a banana peel in this one. They are looking rather “mid”. We’ll have to see how they gel in due time.

Yet another saved penalty shot in this one. Are the referees PS-happy this year? That would not be a bad thing. Anyhow, the Bluegars bounced back big-time to get some measure of revenge after a loss to the Banjo-Mutts in last year’s conference final.

This Friday game was categorized as a “scrimmage”. There is nothing about it on either sides’ schedule & results page. The Bison social media is weak, except on Instagram. Facebook and X/Twitter sites are no longer being updated. Now, I thought I quickly saw a 6-4 Bison win on IG, but could not find that picture later on. (This is the problem with IG.) So I have inserted that score with a question mark.

➤ Moose: Updated Moose Roster (PDF)

This was a nice Monday night at the Canada Life Centre. They should have told fans that there would be no admission. Just expensive popcorn and drinks!

They never passed out line-up sheets for this one, but the Bisons had their usual IG picture:

Scratches:
Forwards: 9 Alarie, 21 Pasternak, 28 Behun
Goaltenders: 30 Kieper, 31 Holt, 34 Plowman

In a twist, each of the three Moose goaltenders played two periods, one for each team in a rotation fashion.

Moose alignment:
Defence:
8 Zloty - 36 Fedorek
4 Barteaux - 2 Bauer
47 Anhorn - 44 Salomonsson

Forwards:
41 Isley - 29 Yager - 22 Dureau
53 Dufort - 14 Yoder - 20 Empey
39 Barlow - 10 Conley - 9 Vitelli
37 Osmundson - 26 Wagner - 40 O'Leary

There is no link I could find with a boxscore or summary, and the shots clock was not in operation. So I compiled what I could.

Quick Summary
1st Period
no scoring
goalies: Moose: 50 DiVincentis, Bisons 32 Milic

2nd Period
03:09 Moose: 44 Salomonsson (22 Dureau)
18:47 Moose: 39 Barlow (26 Wagner)
goalies: Moose: 30 Poulter, Bisons: 50 DiVincentis

3rd Period
00:15 Moose: 39 Barlow (9 Vitelli)
12:22 Bisons: 23 Lane (6 Coyle, 24 Brennan)
17:29 Moose: 29 Yager (41 Isley) ENG
goalies: Moose: Milic, Bisons: Poulter

Of note, all four Moose goals were scored by prime NHL prospects due for the Jets' roster by no later than 2027-28.

Both 2nd period goals were over Domenic DiVincentis's right shoulder. Elias Salomonsson (2022 2nd round pick) crept in from the point and got away a zinger into the top corner. Then Colby Barlow (2023 1st round pick) outmuscled the Bison D to get his stick on a puck just outside the crease, and lifted it almost straight up into that same corner.

The Moose acquired a bit of comfort early in the 3rd when Barlow again pounced on a puck that Poulter didn't control (but really should have), and jammed it home. But there was no quit in the Bisons. Grady Lane broke the shutout, giving the Bisons some hope for a comeback. They pulled the goalie with two-and-a-half minutes left in a bid to pull off an upset, but instead 1st round pick Brayden Yager (2023 1st round pick) scored a long-distance empty-netter to seal the deal.

All-in-all, a decent enough performance against an opponent much stronger than Regina!
