"We'll break their freakin' legs first, Pope or no Pope!"
-- Los Mexicanos

I've just worked out that Argentina could get through if they draw tonight, but it would be tough.

They've not been very good. Messi has done nothing.

Gary Neville and Roy Keane are far from impressed by what they've seen from Argentina in that first half.

Both are laying into the Argentine players over on ITV with Neville saying "is this what they are" and that "players aren't fearful of Lionel Messi anymore.".

He adds: "When a player of such stature has that demeanour it is so devastating for his team-mates."

Messi hammers it in

Argentina 1-0 Mexico

We've been waiting a long, long time for that moment of magic - and guess who delivers?

It's a brilliant goal. You've got to say that Argentina haven't looked like scoring. It was going to be a moment of brilliance.

Messi just hangs out, 30 yards from goal, when the ball's fed to him. He has time and space, takes a lovely left-footed touch to move the ball across his body and, with his second touch, hammers the ball on the bounce into the corner.

No chance for the goalkeeper. Messi makes his mark. Argentina in front.

Lionel Messi now has as many World Cup goals as Diego Maradona (eight), with only Gabriel Batistuta (10) scoring more for Argentina at the competition.

That goal also means Messi has scored in six successive appearances for Argentina, his joint-longest scoring run in international football (also six between November 2011 - September 2012).

88,966 is tonight's match attendance.

Goal!

Argentina 2-0 Mexico

Enzo Fernandez scores his first international goal to keep his country in the tournament.

The scoreline flatters Argentina. This is not a great Argentina side and they won't win this tournament.

Argentina work a short corner as Mexico fall asleep at the back.

Fernandez picks the ball up on the edge of the box, produces a lovely step-over throwing a couple of defenders off his scent and then curls a delicious shot into the far right corner.

*****

What a way to score your first international goal. Enzo Fernandez (21y 313d) is the youngest Argentine to score at the World Cup since Lionel Messi in 2006 (18y 357d).

Mexico fought like heroes, but were simply outclassed.

I don't think they were outclassed. Argentina did nothing for two thirds of the match. It was just that moment of brilliance from their magician up front in the 64th minute which won it for them and sparked them into life.

I don't think Brazil or France will be too worried by them.

Up next for Argentina is Poland - who sit one point clear at the top of the group. Mexico play Saudi Arabia next. Any two of these four teams can still qualify.

Croatia 0-1 Canada

The goal coming after just ONE minute. It's the fastest goal of the tournament so far. Are Canada going to shock Modric and Co? They've played 6 minutes.

I'm watching it at my parents' house.

Canada have scored their FIRST EVER goal in a World Cup.

In their only other tournament appearance - Mexico '86 - they lost 1-0 to France, 2-0 to Hungary and 2-0 to the Soviet Union.

Then last week they lost 1-0 to Belgium.

Alphonso Davies has the honour of scoring Canada's first goal in a World Cup finals.
