It was #80’s 24th birthday yesterday and Chris Williams made the most of it with a 93-yard kick return TD, one of only two TDs scored by the Cats last night. The 5’8”, 155 lb Williams is having an outstanding year and is in line for a possible nomination as Rookie of the Year in the CFL.
Unfortunately, Chris aside, the Cats were severely out-performed by the Eskimos last night. Jerome Messam ran for 140 yards and scored two TDs to take his team into a tie with the Stamps for top spot in the West. The ground game was the story of the night for the Eskimos who had lagged in that department in their last few games. They had a total of 223 rushing yards on the night.
The Ti-Cat defence was porous to say the least – missed assignments and tackles left gaping holes that the Esks capitalized on time after time. Rickie Ray, with great pass protection, was able to hook up for 25 of 32 passes and 226 passing yards. Fred Stamps caught 14 passes for 130 yards and came within two catches of tying the all-time number of receptions in a single game.
Kevin Glenn had a less than stellar night with on 14 of 23 completed passes and one interception. Quentin Porter eventually replaced him in the 4th and managed to take the team down-field for 91-yard scoring drive with an Avon Cobourne TD. Too little, too late for the Cats who went down 38 to 23.
In other CFL news, the Blue Bombers will be in Montreal to play the Als on Sunday at 10:00 PST on TSN. And, Craig Butler of Saskatchewan was named the Canadian Player of the Week for his contributions to the Rider win over the Bombers last week.
