The head of Canada’s automotive parts industry is warning against dropping tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, saying the move would jeopardize the country’s EV sector and send the wrong message during an ongoing trade dispute with Beijing.
Hmmmm…I wonder what the head of Canada’s automotive parts industry’s opinion of the tariff on Western Canadian producers of Canola is? About the same as the Ontario Premier’s opinion that it’s only good as a bargaining chip to protect Ontario’s automotive industry? Even the fledgeling almost nonexistent EV version of it?
Who cares? I'm not particularly interested in your views on quantum physics or medieval French poetry, though I'd listen respectfully and with interest to your informed views on the transportation industry. What does the "head" of Canada's automotive parts industry know about Canola? Hell, if he did address it, he'd just be blasted for talking about a subject he has neither interest nor knowledge in.

Maybe need to have joint session with the head of Canada's tractor and ag-equipment parts industry?

On Wednesday, the bustling opening day of the autumn edition of southern China's Canton Fair in Guangzhou - the world's largest trade show - all 15 companies Reuters spoke with said they had seen no U.S. buyers. Most noted an uptick in attendees from Brazil, Southeast Asia and Europe. All said they were prioritising market diversification.

"The situation's too unstable. (Trump's) like a child - crying one minute, laughing the next. You can't play along with that," said Cherry Yuan, overseas sales manager at Foshan Greenyellow Electric Technology, a maker of mosquito trapping equipment.

Cai Jing, who runs a travel mug company started by her mother and uncle in 1998 that recently started making personal blenders, said export manufacturers have little choice.

It hasn't been the decision of Chinese exporters to abandon the U.S. market, Cai said.

"Sales to the U.S. have dropped a lot, by around half. It's not that we’re giving up on the U.S. market. It's that U.S. buyers gave up on us."

This is the dire situation for the Canadian auto sector right now, so having the Carney government seek a deal that does not include auto would be a major blow. It might also signal that Carney and his team are willing to accept the terms laid down by Donald Trump’s commerce secretary Howard Lutnick.
“Car assembly is going to be in America and there is nothing Canada can do about it,” Lutnick said speaking to a Toronto business group two weeks ago.

Note position of elbow when Carney asks Trump to pull his finger.

Prime Minister Mark Carney admitted a broader trade agreement with U.S. President Donald Trump is no longer within reach and gave his strongest signal yet that talks to lift 25-per-cent auto tariffs will be punted to next year's review of the Canada-U.S.-Mexico trade agreement.
In French, Carney said the Americans are only interested in doing sectoral agreements with all countries, not just Canada, and said the premiers and he are now looking toward the "renegotiation" of the CUSMA trade deal, before correcting himself to call it a review.

In English, he pointed out the upcoming "review of our overall agreement, the CUSMA agreement with the U.S. and Mexico, that's coming up in a few months time, and so broader aspects will be brought there."

Then the prime minister issued a veiled threat of his own to the U.S., saying that if Canada cannot get fair access to the U.S. market for its products, Ottawa will respond and "change the terms" of its commercial relationship with the U.S. "but we're not there yet." (??? Elbows sometimes???)

My elbows would be building an oil terminal in Halifax or St John fed by rail and Newfie offshore oil for EU trade.

"I'm taking my ball AND my bat and going home!"

"Um. . . that's Bobby's ball and Jimmy's bat, Donny."
Apparently, this is Trump’s latest excuse and justification for drama surrounding tariffs with Canada:
(YouTube & President Reagan's Radio Address on Free and Fair Trade on April 25, 1987)

The U.S. President on Thursday night said trade talks with Canada would be terminated “based on their egregious behaviour.”

In the Friday post, he accused Canada of “fraudulently” claiming that Mr. Reagan opposed tariffs “when actually he LOVED TARIFFS FOR OUR COUNTRY, AND ITS NATIONAL SECURITY.”
I wonder how many will bother to watch the five minutes of video of what Reagan actually said, to fact check Hasbara, etc…?

Yo! Didn't watch. I listened.

Canadians might be being gamed by both Carney and Trump as in cahoots.

Questions? Shouldn't Liberals be jumping for joy over this one particle tariff?

If we go on a magic carbon ride those cuts to forestry buy us a pipeline or two (convertable to hydrogen) to fund the sprouting hydrogen industry. Hydrogen buys more flights on the magic carbon ride and more NG into H or LNG.

BC needs to justify more NG pipelines to LNG that gobbles up Site C electricity.

EU still has that carbon stink game going and needs fuel.

BTW don't we have a housing crisis that could really use cheap subsidized lumber for job stability?

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (AP) — President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he plans to hike tariffs on imports of Canadian goods by an extra 10% because of an anti-tariff television ad aired by the province of Ontario.

The ad used the words of former President Ronald Reagan to criticize U.S. tariffs, angering Trump who said he would end trade talks with Canada. Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he would pull the ad after the weekend, and it ran Friday night during the first game of the World Series.

“Their Advertisement was to be taken down, IMMEDIATELY, but they let it run last night during the World Series, knowing that it was a FRAUD,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform as he flew aboard Air Force One to Malaysia.

"Because of their serious misrepresentation of the facts, and hostile act, I am increasing the Tariff on Canada by 10% over and above what they are paying now.”

It was not immediately clear when the 10% hike would come into effect, nor whether it would apply to all Canadian goods.
