Sorry to snap everyone's neck starboard. Here in my town, Oshawa, ON., we have a great little fine dinning place called Harpo's. They have a varied menu but they definitely have Greek owners. When you sit down they bring you a small block of goat cheese, some sour dills and some real garlic bread. In the winter we sit near the fire place and in the summer in the solarium.
Now that I think of it we are in debt to ourselves for an anniversary dinner, 19 yrs, so soon will be our return to Harpo's.

Excellent eh1eh;
You don't get a nice appetizer in many restaurants unless you order it from the menu.
We have several Greek restaurants in Nanaimo and it's almost time for a roast lamb dinner with rice and potatoes....

Yuan, do you know if there are any real good 'totally organic' restaurants in Nanaimo?
I have been in the one near woodgrove, it's not too bad, but I would love to find one
as good as the one in 'Market Square' in Victoria. It doesn't have to be vegetarian, just
organic, which can include some poultry and some meats.

Talloola, organic restaurants are just not something I have searched for. My tastes are pretty much meat and potatoes with a little Cordon Bleu thrown in, but I recognise and appreciate well prepared food. The only true organic food I know of is the tomatoes we are growing on the sundeck that are probably going to rot on the vine because they were planted too late.;-)

Yeah, mine are too.

My daughter eats nothing but completely organic food, other than what is impossible to
buy. She pays way too much for her poultry and lamb. She has a very strict diet that she
followes, which is - 'eat for your blood type',- and there is a huge web site run by
a Dr.D'Adamo, who has perfected this way of eating, and it is very complex and hard to
follow for 'us', who have eaten in a certain way all of our lives. But, she swears by it,
and follows it about 90% of the time.
I'm with you, I eat everything I like, within reason, try to eat healthy and fresh foods,
and keep my weight at a acceptable level.
Do you eat lamb? I want to try it, but the only lamb I've ever eaten is those little lamb
chops, when my mother used to cook them, but my daughter claims that lamb is much
better for us than the other meats, except for 'organic' poultry.
Maybe you can suggest a cut of lamb that will 'taste' good.

A good cut of lamb can be a little pricey. I would suggest a three or four pound boneless leg of lamb. It will probably cost you $25 to $35 dollars but it is all meat. I like my lamb well done......maybe a little trace of pink at the center but not much. The drippings will make great gravy......add a bit of basil and red wine.......;-)

There was a time when lamb was almost an economy meat. I used to buy a whole lamb, cut and wrapped for the freezer for under fifty dollars Beef shanks and liver were almost given away. Those days are long gone. Our store just had back ribs on sale again for $9.89 per kilogram....About $4.50 per pound. The ribs are vacuum packed with two racks of ribs about a pound and a quarter each, in each package......Just about right....;-)

What is the name for an almost yearling lamb? In my mind this is the best lamb. You get lamb chops with more than a spoonful of meat on them, and a leg might go to 10 or 12 pounds with out the bone. The meat is not tougher, nor is it gamier tasting. I think we miss the boat harvesting tiny little lambs instead of putting a bit of meat on them.

I don't know anything about sheep except they taste good and they're cuddly. I'v always wondered what the benefit of doing tiny little sheep was and I agree it's frustrating trying to get a mouthfull. Is it mutton? I always thought that was boiled sheep.

Well Juan, we are off to Victoria tomorrow, (for that angiogram appointment for my husband), he and I will have all day tomorrow, so we will find 'Barb's Fish & Chips', can't wait
for that, and on our way home on Friday, we will stop at the 'Crow & Gate' for lunch, I'll
have my computer with me so I will check in from time to time, but 'shopping' comes first,
and, oh yeah, the angiogram thing, oh dear, 'what an awful wife I am.;-)

Have a great day and I hope you get all the right answers from the angiogram test. The angiogram is not a big problem but the site where they enter the artery can be a little painful for a day or two. Good luck TTYS.....

I hope you enjoy the Crow and Gate.....................Cheers

PS: The Crow and Gate make one of the best beef dips anywhere.

I hear they don't do it through the 'groin' area any more, it is now done, in the arm.
I know when he had it done in Vancouver years ago, it was the groin, a little touchy
with bleeding problems in some cases, especially for people on blood thinners, there was
a woman having it done at that time, who they had a big problem as the bleeding just wouldn't stop for a long time, and that big artery carries so much blood, can be a
problem.

Ahhh.....Victoria, I haven't been there in a few years, but it was always a nice place to visit for a day or so.....playing tourist. On topic....fave restaurants....while it was never considered to be a "restaurant" it still had the best oyster burgers I've ever had. The place I'm thinking about is a little drive in type place in beautiful "downtown" Jordan River, the name of which escapes me. Then there were those excellent burgers at the Port Renfrew hotel....

Okay....here's two for one.....if you're travelling the Malahat to Victoria with some time to spare, take a side trip to Crofton...DO NOT EAT THERE !!....take the ferry to Saltspring (walk on) just off the terminal is the Vesuvius Inn...they used to make the BEST seafood chowder. It's a great little place, with a great view!

I noticed the topic had gone on to lamb, while Vancouver Island has good lamb, Saltspring lamb is to die for. There used to be a butcher in Ganges on the main drag...Matt's meats.I would always put in an order when I hit the island, then pick it up the morning I left....he made the very best lamb sausage......sorry I hate to repeat myself, but they were to die for. Damn I gotta make a road....errr....ferry trip pretty soon!

Hi Juan: Had lunch at 'Crow & Gate' today on the way home, 'Beef Dip' was so good, and
we shared a boston clam chowder. What a nice place, have added it to our list. We also
ate at 'Barb's Fish & Chips' at the fisherman's wharf in Victoria. Right up there with the best halibut and chips I've ever had, (a little pricey, but it is tourist season, so I guess they
have to make hay while the sunshines.) Just a little place on the dock, but very nice
atmosphere, for sure.

Had lunch, all by myself yesterday at the 'Macaroni Grill', right beside Mayfair Mall, pasta
with sundried tomatoes, olives, chicken, spinach, olive oil and cheese type sauce, was so
good, they give out a small loaf of bread, and dish of olive oil and balsamic vinegar prior
to meal, I bought half of everything home with me, 'it was divine'.
I would have had a glass of wine with meal, but probably would have to have a nap in the car before I could have driven anywhere.;-)

Angiogram went well, no bad arteries, so, it will just be the valve replacement, it is the
aeortavalve which sends the new blood through to the aeorta, it's only opening about 30 to 40 %, so that is why all the fatigue. I listened to his heart, sounds just like someone walking with one very squeaky shoe, 'exactly', like that, very wierd.
Have to wait for call now, for the surgery date, we can't wait, want to get this done,
and get rid of that squeak.
They went in through the 'wrist', which is much easier 'after' the fact, as one can get up right away, as with groin
entry, they have to lay flat all day.

We first heard about the Crow and Gate from a friend of ours from Ontario who had been to the place a year or two earlier. That was about ten years ago when we moved to Gabriola Island. We've been at least a monthly lunch customer since then. Jan and I tend to have a main course and a drink each and split a dessert. We haven't been there for dinner yet.

Glad to hear about the angiogram. Valve replacements are getting to be such a common operation now it is incredible. It is still open heart surgery but it seems so routine today. At one time these operations were only done in a few major hospitals in a few major cities. in the world. The really neat thing is that he will be wanting to run around the block as soon as he gets home and his biggest pain will be the damn incision. My neighbor had quintuple by-pass surgery and two days later he was out walking with his wife.

Cheers.................Wayne
