A Calgary-based company has added over two dozen of its sandwiches to a widening recall of products over concerns the deli meat might be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.



The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a statement early Monday that Lucerne Foods was recalling 28 varieties of sandwiches because some contained Maple Leaf Foods deli meats involved in a massive recall last week.
Maple Leaf temporarily closed one of its Toronto plants after the bacterium was found on some of its products.
Laboratory tests have conclusively linked some of the products to the deaths of four people, three in Ontario and one in B.C.
There have been 21 confirmed cases of listeriosis in British Columbia, Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan, and 30 cases remain under investigation.
On Sunday, federal Health Minister Tony Clement said the number of cases is expected to rise, since people can be infected for a length of time before showing symptoms.

I think that is comparing apples with oranges. This was Maple Leaf's fault, Tylenol was not.

I am sure after the lawsuits hit them, they will be much more careful with the quality of their food. So, it should be okay to get the food after this is over. I will still eat their products.

One thing that you might perhaps want to consider is that this was a problem with two production lines in one plant, not everything that Maple Leaf makes.

I know the Tylenol thing was tampering, but my point is that I don't lose faith in good products over relatively minor things.

Fer sure, TenPenny. Like, I used to floss my teeth in public, and pull out ear hair in church......My wife still married me.........smart lady, eh;-)

Seriously, I do believe ML, and all food processors need more oversight, not from their own company but from (sorry) GOVERNMENT inspectors. We don't know that this would not have happened, in that event. But, we don't know that it would have, either.

I would err on the side of more inspection.............another brilliant reduction by the Harris reich.

My point is, stuff happens. Accidents can happen, whether it's in a carefully inspected meat plant, or on your front lawn. Hysterical reactions don't help anybody,but I guess they're fun on the net.

Ok, I'll stop buying Maple Leaf, I'll stop buying propane, and I'll stop buying tylenol. I won't drive my car because there is a potential to have an accident and I'll put my dog down because he might bite me. I won't ride my bike, even with a bike helmet because I may be dragged down the street. I won't ask a stranger for a cigarette because I may end up chopped in six pieces. I won't leave my drink unattended in the bar in case someone puts GHB in it. I won't go downtown Toronto on Boxing Day because someone might shoot me. I NEVER leave the house on September 11. I won't open my door to strangers and I won't flash my lights at cars on the street. I will keep my children out of the balls at Ikea.

I will stay in my basement with the asbestos and mould and pray, pray, pray.
