BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A Chinese attacker stabbed to death the father-in-law of a U.S. Olympic coach and seriously wounded the American's wife and a Chinese tour guide before killing himself, the International Olympic Committee said Saturday.
Todd Bachman, seen in a 1995 photo from KARE-TV, was stabbed to death Saturday in Beijing, China.

Todd and Barbara Bachman of Lakeville, Minnesota, were attacked at the Drum Tower, an ancient monument in downtown Beijing, the IOC and Chinese authorities said.
Barbara Bachman's injuries are "serious and life-threatening," an IOC statement said. The tour guide's condition was not immediately clear.
Todd Bachman was the father-in-law of U.S. Olympic men's indoor volleyball head coach Hugh McCutcheon. McCutcheon's wife, 2004 U.S. Olympic women's indoor volleyball player Elisabeth Bachman McCutcheon, was with her parents when they were attacked, but she was not hurt, the IOC said.
The Bachmans were not wearing apparel that identified them as relatives of members of the U.S. delegation at the time of the attack, the IOC said.

The attack happened around noon at the Drum Tower, a popular tourist site, China's official news agency Xinhua reported.
The assailant, a 47-year-old man from Hangzhou in eastern China, jumped to his death from the tower after the attack, authorities said
"It is impossible to describe the depth of our sadness and shock in this tragic hour," said U.S. Olympic Committee Chairman Peter Ueberroth. "Our delegation comes to the Games as a family, and when one member of our family suffers a loss, we all grieve with them. Our thoughts, prayers and deepest condolences are with the Bachman and McCutcheon families."

:angry3:...Guess they have a knife problem over there, too.

At least the perp bought the farm via the quick stop. Generous of him. :angry3:

Course, the Society for the Rehabilitation of Murderous Idiots, will probably want a full inquiry, just to make sure it was actually the murderer who took a leap; and just not a stand-in. ............

Totally disgusting.

One more reason for "China" to love China.

Was any reason given for this unprovoked attack ? why Olympic men's indoor volleyball head coach Hugh McCutcheon or was it just because he was American.???

It wasn't the coach stabbed, it was his father-in-law, and it sounds like there was no way to identify who they were. Just someone with a grudge against tourists I suppose.

? A random crazy can't really be held against the country they come from, IMO. It's not like China sent him out there to kill people, or put up a statue for him. Sure, there may be reasons to poke at China, but, this? Or maybe I'm reading you wrong.

If I heard it correctly there were tens of thousands of people displaced to build Olympic venues. In Vancouver they can't bulldoze a couple of crackhouses on East Hastings without human rights people screaming. In China I can only imagine how many individuals were tossed into the street to fend for themselves in the preparation for the games.

Did you happen to see the first medals awarded? They were to 3 American women in the
sabre event. This weird American anthem came on, and although technically perfect,
the style was most peculiar. I couldn't believe my ears. Mix in a little Harry Potter music
and you've got the idea.

We might get to see the same sort of rage in Toronto around 2010....

Well, how can they secure every last tourist attraction PLUS the games though? It seems a bit unlikely that they can prevent any trouble at all times.

I suppose your right i just thought that this was such a high profile affair that all precautions were in place i don't suppose that included last tourist attraction though ...and one nut job with a knife could get through
Security precautions in Beijing

Beijing has taken a series of measures in place to guarantee the security of the upcoming Beijing Olympics. Missiles have been deployed near the Bird's Nest, the main Olympic venue. Security checks are needed for subway passengers, railway passengers, as well as buses bound for the Chinese capital.

I believe these measures are essential for the safety of all participants, audience, as well as other people who will be in Beijing during the two months.

We have no comprehension what it must be like to be in those kinds of crowds, I
watch documentaries of cities in China, and the boat traffic on their rivers alone,
is something that makes my mouht open in awe, it's amazing how 'that' many people
live together, so, fast forward to an olympics, and raise those numbers even higher, and
there is bound to be problems.
Kreskin, you are 'right on', the kind of cruelty that vancouver pushed onto its low housing
people and renters during expo, is nothing compared to how they shovelled thousands of
poor people into the streets, or others places,' that' they had no say in, 'just' had to go there, just to put on the olympics.
I'm sure they are not happy, and, how many more might there be, who have had their lives
turned upside down, because of this event.

Yes. Chinese have a history of killing people like Todd Bachman. It is part of their voo... I mean culture. They are somewhat great. I heard the Chinese government also restrict the use of cellphones and blackberries.

Below is a wild story I heard from my relative's friend:

My relative's friend says my relative's friend accidentally offended some person. My relative's friend didn't say how he offended the person, however my relative's friend believes my relative's friend is innocent. I don't know if my relative's friend is innocent.

Anyways. My relative's friend went on a vacation. He went to Shanghai. This story is definitely offtopic. The Shanghai gang decide to pay back the relative's friend by scaring him. The gang head decide to use a gun. The gun threatens this friend to take off his shoes and socks. The friend, fearing for his life, takes off his shoes and socks. The gang laughs crazily.
In the end, the gang member releases the friend.

Oh. I remembered. My relative's friend betrayed my relative. My relative's friend also betrays the progress to create a safer and better world. My relative didn't punish my relative's friend. Other people used this chance to punish my relative's friend. It wasn't really punishment. It was more like fun and games.

I suppose the Chinese, America, and Russia are fighting some sort of spiritual fight? I suppose the countries are fighting for fame, power, and looks?

I do hope that this is investigated thoroughly. It may be a random thing.but there may be more behind it. Just last week,in Canada, after a gay pride parade,a man whacked 9 people in the head with a hammer. This is being passed off as a 'mentally ill ' man snapping, but it is not. There is a lot more to it.

The news here said the first medal of the games went to a Czech woman Katerina Emmons. The fencing medals to the American women were the first medals for the Americans, not the first medals of the games.
