I've always admired Catholic devotionals. What is the story of Lent? How long has the Catholic Church practiced it? Traditionally, what are you to do in this period if you are Roman Catholic?

I wasn't indicating that women ARE secondary - I was asking women who believe in the Roman Catholic Faith if their role is felt to be "secondary"..... I hardly think the comment that I was
being silly is very complimentary.

As I do not belong to that faith I was gathering information.... I thought that was the idea of forums... there is nothing silly in asking questions is there?

no no, I didn't mean you were being silly. sorry i worded it poorly.

You had said something along the lines of 'perhaps we've taken equality too far', and I was essentially agreeing, that at times, trying to pretend everything is 100% the same is silly.

We had to give up television too. This year I think i'm going for my passion-chocolate.

When I was growing up, we each had to make a choice to give up one of our favourite toys for Lent. I grew up in a houseful of 7 kids, 3 brothers and 3 sisters, so you can imagine the fuss. Nice tradition.Keeps kids in mind of doing without.

It's a pagan thing same as the ritual canibalism at the alter with the blood and flesh of christ ritually consumed by the petitioners. Not much different than eating the warrior you have defeated in battle and in incorporating his/her power. The church has always pretended to be above the pagan beliefs but has always remained in thrall to the old ways, barely varnished with its monotheistic nonesense. There is not an original bone in the whole construct. The father of the modern transnational corporation.Lent and lint, what's the difference? Before chocolate we used chickens and goats.

That's not cool. Why get all hung up on other peoples beliefs if they don't bother you?

This year, I hope more christians give up calling homosexuals sinners, and fighting against gay marriage for lent.

Dude, they're not gonna go against their beliefs. Respect their integrity. I don't follow my faith at all anymore, but I respect very much those that do.Besides, homosexuals are playing games with our heads. No way two guys can be "married".

Let me get this straight...you want me to respect the beliefs of someone, or a religion that states two people that are in love with eachother and want to marry can't possibly be in love and are sinners? Isn't that judging? Where is the integrity there? Seems like a complete and total hypocritical view.

No, until some major fundementals in hateful beliefs change, I won't be supporting christianity anytime soon.

Easy, easy. I'm only saying that the whole bag about being free is they have the right to follow their own spiritual path. If you don't wanna dig it, cool, but don't expect them to change to please you.Anyways, you know you're wasting space arguing, the RC Church isn't gonna change because some guy on a website says so.

Attacks and disrespect breed attacks and disrespect. If you want to explain to Christian people why they should push for change within their churches, to be more tolerant of homosexuals, the way to do is not by coming in and picking fights on a thread discussing holy days. You won't earn an audience or respect that way.

Thanx Padre...

I know many will quickly dismiss this, but I do not find it all that hard to believe. As you know Padre, in my faith(as it were), we believe that we posess the spirits of certain animal totems, within us. They guide us and direct our actions. This I can easily prove. Take a look at my attitude and then read about the Bear totem and how the Bear behaves.

It is that far a stretch, to think that not all spirits that enter us, have or best ntentions in mind.

sometimes it seems to me like the label "christianity" covers a huge fractal pattern of scisms.

from my knowledge I don't believe that catholicism is inherently sexist, but members of the catholic church sometimes misinterpret what they see and learn and turn it into sexism. I agree that the best way to celebrate people's worth is to celebrate their differences, and women are very different to men in so many ways. For a start they're usually more subtle. maybe that's why their roles often are too

Where was the beginning though? I'm stating that because of hate and disrespect, I feel frustration and anger towards many religions. Now you are telling me that if someone wants to respect me, I shouldn't say anything about this disrespect at this point and time, because it's disrespectful. I felt I brought up a very good point at a very appropriate time. Like I stated, I don't think I will be changing anyones mind. However, I do feel that I am pointing out blatant hypocrisy and voicing how frustrated I am about it. This is, as I stated before, as discussing forum. Some of you folks seem to have trouble grasping this concept.

The perception is that you're just jumping in and making snide comments to all involved in this post based on our religion, without finding out what we really think first. That's where the difference lies. If you care to discuss gay rights and gay marriage, open a thread, I'd be glad to pop in and give you my views, but here, discussing lent, it's just trolling.
