Serious' bomb plot against Canada averted: police
Last Updated Sat, 03 Jun 2006 12:54:40 EDT
CBC News

Declaring that Canada "is not immune to the threat of terrorism," the RCMP announced on Saturday the arrests of 17 people accused of planning a series of attacks against targets in southern Ontario.
An officer is seen outside the police station in Pickering, Ont., on Friday night

"This group holds a real and serious intent," RCMP Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell told reporters.

"Our investigation prevented the assembly of any bombs and attacks from being carried out."

He declined to answer

These idiots had three tons of Ammonium nitrate. About three times what was used to blow up the federal building in Oklahoma City.

Thank goodness for the RCMP, CSIS, TPS etc. Think of what could have happened if they hadn't been stopped.

I was going to delete this thread because Karlin had already started one on the same topic. That topic seems to have evolved into the broader picture.

What caught my attention was the amount of Ammonium nitrate these guys had. I would guess that anyone collecting that much of that particular fertilizer would automatically get looked at by the authorities. Judging by the damage that was done in Oklahoma City with only a third as much explosive, this would have been a very serious bomb. I understand the nitrate has to be mixed with diesel fuel and that it needs a conventional explosive like dynamite to set it off. I also understand that it could have made many smaller bombs.

A list of the men arrested. The other five were minors.

1. Fahim Ahmad, 21, Toronto;

2. Zakaria Amara, 20, Mississauga, Ont.;

3. Asad Ansari, 21, Mississauga;

4. Shareef Abdelhaleen, 30, Mississauga;

5. Qayyum Abdul Jamal, 43, Mississauga;

6. Mohammed Dirie, 22, Kingston, Ont.;

7. Yasim Abdi Mohamed, 24, Kingston;

8. Jahmaal James, 23, Toronto;

9. Amin Mohamed Durrani, 19, Toronto;

10. Steven Vikash Chand alias Abdul Shakur, 25, Toronto;

11. Ahmad Mustafa Ghany, 21, Mississauga;

12. Saad Khalid, 19, Mississauga.

One can't help but see that all the names are of Arab origins. A good number of these people are from prominent families. Is there any way of telling which Muslims are trustworthy, and which are not? That sounds bigoted, but what is the answer?

They are innocent until proven quilty.

No doubt, but these arrests were made after a year long investigation and these people did have the explosives. I don't suppose the police wanted to wait until the stuff was used.

Jersay... you are willing to withhold judgement on these people but you have already convicted the Marines in Haditha.

I agree they are innocent until proven guilty. But shouldn't accused people be innocent until proven guilty?

No I have stated what I would do if I found the Marines quilty. Now I lean towards they are quilty but if they did not kill someone and that is proved in a court of law that is fine by me.

oklahoma building was not destroyed by a nitrate ,the the atf deliberately placed several booms in the building ,the explosion was from inside out and not from out side .

one interesting thing ,i typed deliberately in google and found some very informative things.

The original topic was about a bomb plot in Canada where the police, it turned out, had provided the tons of explosive(fake of course)to the bad guys.

Too bad about the official complicity in this one- I bet the guys "responsible" will all die in prison before even being tried, since mostof the "evidence" is probably "state secrets"

I wonder if there's any extra space in Gtimo??

Seriously, what IS happening on this supposedly mega-important case??

One thing I noticed right away, is that there are no Irishmen among them, or Scotsmen, or French, or German......This is kind of clouding my thinking because over half of these young men were from very successful families who were doing well in Canada. Makes you wanna think, don't it.
