After Moroun gave hefty contributions to state lawmakers in the early 2010s, Michigan failed to advance legislation that would’ve helped fund the Gordie. Canada swallowed the full cost instead.
Democratic candidate Mallory McMorrow
new ad, shared first with The Associated Press, accuses Trump of blocking the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and suggests he is doing so to benefit a major political donor, building on an anti-corruption message she has sought to make central to her campaign.

The ad claims Trump is blocking the bridge for billionaire donor. McMorrow argues that Trump is blocking the bridge because “the billionaire family that owns the other bridge gave him a million bucks."

That claim references the Moroun family, owners of the privately held Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor. Federal campaign finance records show Matthew Moroun donated $1 million to Trump's super PAC earlier this year on January 16th. In February, Trump demanded in a social media post that Canada hand over at least half ownership of the new bridge to the U.S. government and accept other unspecified demands, part of his broader clashes with Canada over trade.

Are they waiting for scrap prices to go up? Ambassador scrap is worth a fuck tonne as it is. The longer it stand the more it's worth.

We really could use both bridges. Right now ambassador Bridge is a clusterfuck, it needed to be replaced years and years ago, but both running would be cool. Ambassador would have to eventually put their prices down to be competitive as right now they can just charge whatever the hell they want, the lineups there could be just outright insane.

Ambassador Bridge would still be a good supplement to the Gordy Howe Bridge, but the approach to ambassador is just awful, and the tolls on it are beyond ridiculous.

Ok, this is a new twist. Republican Senatorial candidate Mike Rogers says, “My argument was, let’s use the bridge opening as an opportunity to stop Canada from hurting American automobile workers.” (?) That said, Rogers told a Detroit radio station this week that the critical span between Detroit and Windsor should remain closed for up to another six months if Canada does not acquiesce to Trump’s demands.

““If we have this bridge open two months, three months, six months later, and we win a significant concession from Canada about these Chinese cars, that’s significant for auto workers right here in the state in keeping their jobs. That’s worth having a little scuffle over.

He concluded: “It is no money out of our pocket having that bridge closed for another six months” and “Canada paid for the Gordie Howe bridge but U.S. Senate hopeful says it 'was not a great deal for us'

“He told Detroit News: “When Canada was trying to allow a huge number of Chinese cars to be brought into Canada, they took the tariffs from 100 per cent down to 6 per cent, and I think they’ve upped their quota to 70,000 on all 100 per cent Chinese-made cars to be able to be brought into Canada.”

(Canada’s annual quota of Chinese-made electric vehicles is in fact 49,000 at a tariff rate of 6.1% per cent but the plan is for that cap to reach 70,000 over five years.”)

Rogers continued: “My argument was, let’s use the bridge opening as an opportunity to stop Canada from hurting American automobile workers.”

“The seeming contradiction in timing was enough for Detroit Metro Times to run its coverage under the headline: “Mike Rogers wants the Gordie Howe bridge open except when he doesn’t.”

In his Q&A with Detroit News, Rogers also said of the bridge: “It was not a great deal for us. We’ll never see any revenue from that thing, from what people around the bridge tell me, for a long time. One hundred years, someone told me. Well, I don’t know if that’s true or not, but it’s breathtaking, that part.”

(The government of Canada, which paid for construction of the bridge in its entirety, expects to recoup its investment over the next 36 years, according to information from the U.S. Department of Transportation” at which time it’s then share revenue between Canada and Michigan)

Much has been made of the role in the dispute by the Moroun family, which owns the existing Ambassador crossing and paid $1 million into a Trump fund prior to the president saying he wanted the bridge to remain closed. But Rogers said the issue for him is purely about Chinese electric vehicles and Michigan jobs, and that he hasn’t spoken to Matthew Moroun, head of the family.”

Last week, in the wake of a planned opening on June 12 that was scuttled at the last minute, Democratic Senate hopeful Mallory McMorrow released a campaign ad which included “one message for the president: Open this damn bridge. And you’d better believe I approve this message.”
Mike Rogers has secured Trump's backing and has campaigned as a strong proponent of the Trump administration's agenda, including the tariff regime and border security policies. Rogers has also publicly defended Trump's controversial trade and border maneuvers, such as threats regarding the Gordie Howe International Bridge, arguing they provide necessary leverage for trade negotiations.

He is making a run for U.S. Senate in the 2026 election. A former FBI agent, he served in the Michigan State Senate from 1995 to 2001 and then spent 14 years as a Congressman for the state. A victory this year would make him the first Republican to capture a U.S. Senate seat in Michigan since 1994.

The president's backing of Rogers came a day after GOP Rep. Bill Huizenga, who had been seriously mulling a Senate run in Michigan, announced that he would not launch a 2026 Senate campaign after consultations with Trump.

Huizenga's announcement and Trump's ensuing endorsement helped clear the field for Rogers, who is making his second straight bid for the Senate.🤔Probably just a coincidence.
Put Mike Roger’s in a commercial vehicle, & have him cross that border at Ambassador Bridge four times in one day. Twice into Canada and twice back into the US, knowing that if he exceeds the HOS (Hours of Service) for either country that he’s gonna get financially punished.

200 years ago they’re probably weren’t, but I just googled it and they started on the ambassador bridge in 1929, the day that it opened.

It’s not ‘overly’ significance for private vehicles ($14 CAD), but it jumps dramatically for commercial vehicles per axle. If you’re a Commercial Truck (even just a 1 ton truck) pulling up an RV with two axles, you’re looking at 60 bucks CAD loaded & another 30 bucks empty to get back into the US after delivery.

The Gordie, when did opens eventually someday now that it’s completed and ready to rock, will be $8/axle and inevitably way faster to get through.

I see what you mean by keeping both open.

Peace Arch used to take hours to get through then they opened Pacific Crossing for Commercial transport. It helped quite a bit when Vancouver had 1 million less people.

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to open in July, sources tell The Associated Press.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was delayed last month after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick intervened days before it was set to take place.

Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers posted on social media that he spoke with Lutnick today and the bridge will open soon

Rogers says "a new deal" is coming in the next few days (???).🤔

Canada agreed to shoulder the cost of constructing the bridge to connect Ontario and Michigan, which it would recoup through tolls.

(Once that’s paid for, then the Canadian government and the state of Michigan would start sharing the tolls)

The ownership is shared between Michigan and the Government of Canada.

After weeks of delays and public criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, the Gordie Howe International Bridge is set to open at the end of the month, but Canada is set to forgo more revenue than initially agreed upon?

Housing, Communities and Infrastructure Canada confirmed the long-awaited opening in a statement late Friday. “Canada and Michigan have agreed to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge on July 27, with the support of the United States Government,” the statement reads in part? Support for an infrastructure project that’s already completed?

“The bridge will be a major economic driver in the region and will also provide options for commuters, tourists, and businesses” with the new crossing between Windsor, Ont. and Detroit, Mich. is expected to significantly ease congestion at the nearby Ambassador Bridge and streamline cross-border trade.

In Friday’s statement, the federal government says Canada and the U.S. have agreed to “a series of cooperative measures focused on toll governance and transparency” and the “establishment of a 15-year economic development fund tied to a portion of profits from bridge operations” (???).

The Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority will also work with the U.S. on an agreement for “certain non-market related toll changes” (???).

According to a senior government source, Canada will get 50 per cent of the bridge’s toll profits in the first 15 years, with the other 50 per cent going into that economic development fund announced on Friday. But who runs that fund has yet to be determined?
1783780153528.jpeg
The source also tells CTV News that both countries agreed that the U.S. will need to be on board if Canada wants to increase bridge tolls by more than 10 per cent or lower them below compared regional averagesahhhh…& protect the Moroun Family of Trump financial contributors. Using the Gordie Howe Bridge has just gotten a whole lot more expensive…
1783780687957.jpeg
“The toll change is a major shift in the agreement first signed in 2012 as part of the Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement. In that deal, Canada agreed to front the full construction costs, which grew to $6.4 billion, and later collect 100 per cent of toll profits until it recouped its investment.
1783781999156.jpeg
The agreement estimated that recoupment would take at least fifty years after which Canada and Michigan would equally split toll revenues…as the bridge is co-owned between the Canadian government and the state of Michigan.

Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, meanwhile, posted on social media Friday that he spoke with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick about the bridge. He also confirmed a “financial deal” where he said the U.S. will see “up to half the revenue???”
1783781058702.jpeg
“Earlier this year, CTV News reported that both sides were trying to quietly negotiate an opening date after Trump complained in February that Canada was not treating the U.S. fairly on trade. Trump went on a lengthy tirade that included the construction of the bridge as part of his grievance.

The New York Times had also previously reported that Matthew Moroun, who is the owner of the nearby Ambassador Bridge and a Trump donor, met with Lutnick hours before Trump’s post in February.

But…but in an interview with Global News last week, U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra denied donations from the Moroun family were behind the delayed opening of the bridge.”

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The U.S. Federal Highway Administration issued a presidential permit for the crossing in 2013, followed by a U.S. Coast Guard bridge permit in 2014. In 2012, the Federal Highway Administration issued a waiver that removed requirements to exclusively use American-manufactured iron and steel for the federal project, which allowed Canadian and American steel to be used, that was funded entirely by the Canadian government.

The owners of the Ambassador Bridge opposed construction of the new bridge, worrying that a publicly-owned competing bridge would harm their business. They supported a 2012 Michigan ballot measure to halt the construction of the new bridge, but voters rejected it. Subsequent lawsuits to stay the construction also failed, and the public project continued, though owners of the Ambassador Bridge would try to claim damages for losses suffered through the construction.

After environmental approvals were secured in both countries in 2009, Canada and the state of Michigan signed the Canada-Michigan Crossing Agreement on June 15, 2012, providing the legal framework for the project. However, conservative voices in the majority-Republican Michigan legislature opposed funding the bridge. Therefore, Canada committed to covering Michigan’s share of construction costs, to be recovered through future toll revenues.

How much better could this deal be for America?
President Trump (in February 2026) accused the Canadian government of bypassing the Buy American Act of 1933—a U.S. law requiring the federal government to give preference to domestically produced goods in its procurement—by exclusively using Canadian steel? The criticism occurred amid broader trade tensions between the United States and Canada, including the imposition of U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, which prompted retaliatory Canadian tariffs and strained bilateral economic relations.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carneyresponded to the Truth Social post by clarifying that steel from both countries was used during construction and that the state of Michigan shares ownership and operation of the bridge with the Canadian government.
The most vocal opposition to the new crossing came from American billionaire Manuel "Matty" Moroun (1927–2020), owner of the nearby Ambassador Bridge. He sued the governments of Canada and Michigan to stop its construction, and released a proposal to build a second span of the Ambassador Bridge (which he would have owned) instead.

Critics suggest that Moroun's opposition was fueled by the prospect of lost profits from duty-free gasoline sales, which are exempt from about 60 cents per gallon in taxes even though the pump price to consumers is only a few cents lower.

"I was able to cut a MUCH BETTER DEAL for America, and by so doing, will be allowing the new and spectacular Gordie Howe International Bridge, spanning Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, to open on July 27th, as scheduled," Trump wrote in the post early Saturday???

The news comes after a planned ribbon-cutting ceremony in June was delayed as the Trump administration looked to “renegotiate” a long-standing agreement between Canada and the U.S.

Trump said in his social media post that the original deal was unacceptable to him, but praised the new one as "great, and fair” ??? To whom? Canada or Michigan? Either? Neither?

Trumps definition of a much better deal could mean anything from a free rotten ronnie burger to someone doing his golf score for him to ensure he wins, to tax revenue going to one of his friends instead of Michigan state coffers.
