Nobody is. Those who have the weaponry and manpower don't have the cash and those that have the cash don't have the weaponry and in many of those cases, they don't really have the manpower either.

Mind you, the US is still in a much better position than Russia or China. Bedpan's excursion into Ukraine has fucked the Russian economy so badly it'll take at least 10 years and more likely closer to 20 years for them just to get back to where they were pre-2022. Even their trade with China has been reduced to basic bartering for the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile Xi has been busy chasing Western investment out of China with his stupid policies. China may have the manpower and the military hardware of questionable capability and quality, but the money is drying up really fucking fast.

Fortunately, the US also has competent, reliable allies to help in case of a major war.

Overall I'd agree with you but then when you hear/read what this paper suggested as to the bigger issues it is still concerning enough.

It also to me is a little cringe when it was previously believed Russia had a better military but now we know that's false... yet there is also this idea China has only a meh military... and I wonder if we're not wrong about that, too.

Myself I still think Canada needs to do more military wise but with the current fuckers in control that's not going to happen. Even if they change who's PM now, I seriously doubt anything will change.

We're not. Most of China's military hardware are second-rate knock-offs of Russian junk. The stuff that isn't are 4th-rate knock-offs of US equipment. In fact most Chinese (and Russian) equipment is a solid 1-2 generations behind Western tech. There are some exceptions, but fortunately mass corruption has made those weapon systems relatively ineffective.

Well we are getting 12 subs added to the fleet so...there is that. Seriously though, Canada's arctic is firmly in Russia's sights. In fact in 2021 they submitted a document to the UN basically claiming the entire arctic as Russian territory. It didn't fly at the UN but it points to the fact that Canada's arctic is already under Russian threat. You'd think Captain Climate Change would be acutely aware of that fact considering if we do reach a point where the North-West Passage becomes ice-free year round, Russia will become a real problem for Canada.

At the time, I asked the sergeant that was nominally my boss how we ever won a war with the general incompetence in our military. He said all armies are run by the same incompetents, so it is a wash. While the boots on the ground types worry about siphoning fuel out of a broke down truck to put in one that still runs, because they used up their fuel budget for the month, the bureaucraps worry about feminine hygiene products in mens toilets.

We can only hope that the North remains relatively full of ice & that the projections of the NW Passage becoming "ice free" is only that - a possibility that may or may not happen. Climate is cynical so who knows what will happen.

But Canada does have a reputation, regardless, and I think that's what more people focus on. We may not "win" wars personally, but we sure as shit make people know when we're in them.

The NWP is ice free almost every summer. Some years are better than others, but marine traffic goes through.

Well they did defeat Japan pretty much by themselves. Yeah, Britain and Canada were there but they were too few in number to be effective and were "neutralized". There were the ANZACS but it was primarily an American war. There's also the Spanish-American War, their own Revolutionary War,

No doubt about that. In fact after WW1 when the Geneva Convention drafted up their rules of shit you're not allowed to do in war, some of Canada's actions were noted and 'inspired" some of the laws. And by actions I mean highly questionable actions. lol
There's a reason the German's called the Canadians "Sturmtruppen" (Stormtroopers).

Pretty much every country that shares a border or even close proximity to Russia has drastically increased their defense spending. Except Canada. And some countries that are sympathetic to Russia.
Problem is, 90% of the country lives nice and close to the US border so we don't really feel that Russian presence in their part of the Arctic. We don't feel just how geographically close Russia actually is to us. And it's not just the Arctic potential, it's all the resource wealth Canada has further south as well. And if China gets a hand in the artic via Eastern Russia, you just KNOW they're gonna be real assholes about it. The fact is Canada could easily meet its NATO commitment and probably even do 3% if our govt learned to quit squandering our money on themselves, their cronies and globalist buddies, every idiot activist cause, useless foreign aid that rarely makes it into the hands of those who need it, reduced the size of govt by the 43% Trudeau increased it, quit letting moochers and leeches into or stay in the country, etc etc. There's all kinds of funds available, the govt just has to reallocate at least some of those wasted funds to defense spending.

In terms of cash, gear, people, strategy, tactics. . . generals are always preparing to fight the previous war. Nobody is ever ready for a war, not even the party that launches it.
I dunno, by 1939 I'd say that tactically and in warfighting Germany had very much prepared to fight their next war. Their major weak point was Hitler. Man, you could write a book called "All The Stupid Shit You Shouldn't Do When You Go to War" using him as a sole source of examples. Putin could write Book 2 in the series although some of his major fuck ups would be repeats of Hitler's dumb-assery.
